I had to deal with this a few years back (actually now that I think about it, over a decade ago. I miss you, Oatmeal). The liquid they usually give is Lactated Ringer's. The expense isn't bad. It's mostly sugar-water, and needles are dirt cheap. You'll have to stop by the vet every couple of weeks for a new bag and some new needles, and to properly dispose of the old needles.
Three times a week I would have to hold her down, scruff some of her back skin, put a rather large needle in and let the fluids go for about 10 minutes. Your cat will enjoy this just about as much as you will. Some cats will get better if you do this regularly, some won't. My Oatmeal didn't get better, but she stopped getting worse (due to her kidney trouble, she did eventually pass just from age). All told, I was doing this 3 times a week for about 3 years. I usually gave her some kind of treat after.
Some things I'd recommend that I've learned since then, and you should apply this advice only where it does not conflict with what your vet is telling you. At the time, I was feeding Oatmeal just about the worst stuff you can feed, and wasn't adding water. Start buying this stuff to feed to her, and add water to the mix (mix just as much water as food). The most important thing is to get water into her so her kidneys have a much easier time doing their job. And this is really good food, like the best you can do for your cat short of either grinding up rabbits and chicken yourself, or buying live bird/mice. One whole can is probably too much for her at a time, so invest in those little tops you can pop on to save the rest.
