Sorry for my delayed response too - this got lost in the pile so to speak. I loaded my Amazon cart up with $4,200 worth of goodies to save so I can link some options for you. Now, you're not going to get around having both the AGA cable and a TB3 cable going to your laptop. What you can do, however, is combine the electronics of the TB3 enclosure and the AGA into a small to mid size tower chassis if you don't want two separate boxes on your desk. There's pros and cons to that and it's a lot of work and takes a bit of skill but it's been done.

I'll break these down into two categories: enclosures that support a GPU and those that do not. The main difference is a) size and b) PSU capacity. If you went the route of hacking both the AGA and TB3 into the same enclosure you'd negate both of those and gain some extra flexibility.

GPU Capable:

  1. HP Omen Accelerator. This is a fantastic device with unique styling. Not only does it support a larger than typical GPU but it has a slot for a 2.5" SATA drive, onboard gigabit NIC, 4x USB 3.1 Type A, 1x USB 3.1 Type-C, 500W power supply. This is a personal favorite of mine but tends to be pricy - currently on sale for $230 from $300 HP Omen Accelerator
  2. Asus ROG XG Station 2. This also has unique styling but has a smaller footprint than the HP Offering. 600W power supply, onboard gigabit NIC, 4x USB 3.0. Way overprice at current listing for $549 Amazon
  3. Razer Core X. 650W PSU, No extra connectivity $299 on Amazon
  4. Akitio Node Pro- Compact size designed for portability - it has a carry handle on top. 500W PSU, Display Port for adding an extra monitor, and extra TB3 port for daisy chaining. $321 on Amazon

Not GPU Capable - these are all much smaller in size

  5. Akitio Node Lite - Display Port for adding an extra monitor, and extra TB3 port for daisy chaining $210 on Amazon
  6. Startech TB3 Expansion Chassis - Display Port for adding an extra monitor, and extra TB3 port for daisy chaining $237 Amazon
  7. OWC Mercury Helios 3 - Display Port for adding an extra monitor, and extra TB3 port for daisy chaining $199 Amazon plus 15% off coupon
  8. Sonnet Echo Express - extra TB3 for daisy chaining, $199 Amazon
  9. Sonnet Echo Express-III-D - This is a beast! It has 3 PCIe 3.0 slots which offers some pretty interesting possibilities especially for someone that works with lots of large video files. This one might also support a GPU. Has extra TB3 for daisy chaining, $899 on Amazon
  10. Magma ExpressBox 3T - This also has 3 PCIe slots $999 OneStopSystems or $1099 Amazon

I don't have any of these but I sure wish I did. Hope this helps...took a while to put together this list! The expensive units with the 3 extra PCI slots would allow you to add in extra NVME drives - either Intel's PCIe slot based drives or standard M.2 PCIe drives on a riser card. EIther would do the trick. I don't know how much data you work with but this would also allow you to add in 10gig ethernet to high speed data transfer to network attached storage or to add in a SAS / SATA controller and have an external storage array. This would allow you to have dozens of terabytes of high speed and data redundant storage.

Here was my shopping list,

-PCIe eGPU enclosure for the WiGig card

-Thunderbolt3 (active) cable

-Vive Wireless Adapter with Vive Pro addon

-Spare battery with 20000mAh Qualcomm QC 3.0

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B077YCR5LC

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01H5QF1GO

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N0X3NL5

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07GKHNBCT

I read about 2 dozen posts around the internet covering the topic of using the wireless adapter with external configurations for laptops. Many people had mixed results and I was hesitant to try it myself but I needed to figure out if it was possible regardless since there wasn't any clear answers.

I ordered the items that made the most sense to me in terms of price and quality. The eGPU enclosure I got was the most attractive and had a carry handle which I liked considering my intended use for this setup was going to be mobile. I went with an active Thunderbolt 3 cable due to the fact that it "should" in theory provide a better signal from the eGPU to the laptop. Finally, I got a spare battery based on the reviews that said the included HTC battery didn't last long and took forever to recharge. The battery I got was recommended by others in the reviews who said they had a Vive Wireless kit.

Once I got all the items I did the setup and fired up the Vive. Right off the bat it worked perfectly. With that said, some of the mixed reviews I was seeing from others trying the eGPU setup had commented on FPS stuttering/lag when moving your head and I did experience this slightly although it was intermittent at times. I also had a brief random moment where everything pixelated pretty bad as if the graphics suddenly got toggled to 1990 Nintendo mode.

In the end I was able to determine the following,

  1. It is possible to run the Vive Wireless Adapter on a laptop.

  2. The hardware of the laptop is an important factor in having a smooth experience with this setup.

  3. Some tweaking and configuration work will need to be done to get a smooth FPS. Still a WIP for me to get the level I'm happy with.

  4. Some games may not be optimized enough to offer crisp visuals.

My testing of this setup was with an Alienware M15 and M17 both with i9 CPU, 2080 RTX, 32GB RAM, and x2 NVME M.2 SSD. I have an older Alienware 17 R5 I plan to test with soon to compare results.

Most importantly, what I noticed in my testing was that there's some graphical loads that will bog down the FPS and cause slight stuttering and it's not yet fully clear why. For example, while in SteamVR home room area there was a few key spots that when I looked directly at them it would cause stutter if I moved my head left and right slowly but if I opened the Steam menu which added a transparent overlay on top of what I was looking at the stutter would go away completely even though I could still see the same thing behind the overlay. I read a lot of people tweaking SteamVR settings to smooth out the FPS and I have yet to get the time to fully dive into that part but I suspect it will likely work out to resolve the issue.

The alternative setup I was wanting to test was getting the Alienware AGA enclosure and testing to see if that provided a better out of the box solution without tweaking settings. I found some people saying it didn't work at all and others saying it did. Considering the cable connection is different it still has me curious, as I believe the cable connection over the AGA is using an identical pipeline/bandwidth as Dell docking stations.

Ok, if you don't feel comfortable doing the work, then having someone else do it is best. However, it generally isn't that hard if you take your time.

I use a Craftsman small screwdriver set like that one, and have for years. Yes, there are cheaper tools. But I happen to like these.

There is a guide on how to tear into your machine, available right here.

It will take you step by step what you need to take apart. Click on the Prerequisites for section "removing heat sink assembly." It will show you what all has to be torn down to get to that part, and remove it.

Then, clean the old paste off with a lint free cloth, and decent rubbing alcohol. I avoid 70% at all costs. I prefer my 99.9% stuff, but have used 80% when in a bind. Make sure it dries completely before you continue. Pure stuff dries very quickly, less pure can take some time.

Then apply the new paste as a thin line about the length of a grain of rice. Don't smear it, try to spread it, or anything else UNLESS it is specifically designed for that (liquid metals come to mind). Then, reassemble. Be careful to ensure the heat spreader is attached evenly, with appropriate pressure.

Undervolting allows you to reduce the heat of the chip by running at voltages lower than it was designed for. Ideally, this shouldn't have to be done. Assuming a decent paste job, you won't. If you do find yourself in the position where that needs done, then use Intel XTU to adjust the voltage in small increments, and run Prime 95 in the background to monitor the results. If the machine becomes unstable, or starts throttling, you went too far.

What you need:
Screw drivers

Lint free cloth (some people use coffee filters, or even paper towels)

Alcohol

Paste (I use IC7 Diamond these days. Works very well on my machines. Arctic Silver 5 is still decent stuff, as is Gelid Extreme. There are others, and I am sure someone else will chime in with their favorites)

Clean, static reducing/non static working environment

Hi darmasita! I am sorry but I might have been exaggerating slightly in my comment - 'cool' there means around 60 - 65 C -ish (on Empyrion - never played Witcher).

I have about the same undervolt (don't have the computer available right now) as you but the cooling pad really helps i believe. If I don't use that it gets about 8 - 10 C hotter :/ I've never had a peak in the 90's after downvolting, but the occasional peak into 80's do occur on Rome 2 (usually on big battles).

Also, I usually play on medium settings with only a few settings cranked up (such as textures), which I think helps as well (I've only ever had budget computers in my life, so even medium settings look good for me xD).

EDIT:

In case you're interested, this is the cooling pad I use.

cooling pad

My cooling pad is for 15' screens but since the A15 protrudes at the back, I really wish I had bought a slightly bigger one xD

u/YourFriendFlicka · 1 pointr/Alienware

I just bought https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01GHTVMVI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and so far it has been great! It holds everything I have and has room to spare. It's only been a week but it's holding up great so far and seems pretty well built. The padding on the bottom could be a little thicker but overall the computer feels protected.

u/Womb_filler · 1 pointr/Alienware

The cooling on this system is really good, depending on what you are doing I would recommend raising the back, some have used a bottle cap under the rubber feet but I find this to be a better solution https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B076BR87GC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I bought 2 and have found that one is strong enough and stable to support the system, the air is sucked in through the bottom and spit out the back.

u/Arcturus075 · 2 pointsr/Alienware

Yeah they have lost their edge a bit, but not too blinded by fandom to ignore it. I have no problem going against its constitutes, even if it falls at times. All in all it is your choice, whatever you choice; various heat temps by others reported has a lot of factors the temp of the room, what it is on, the dust built up over time. No matter what you end up choosing to go with, I would say get a extra laptop cooler on your machine, every little bit helps overtime.

Personally I have two coolers on my laptop machine, (Coolmaster massive 200mm fan I believe, and havoc vacuum on the vent [CPU focus] on the side./vacuum is an example they don't make my model anymore they cost 15-30 usually on amazon.) and it helps it run much cooler. I will now always keep the combo, because it's just overall healthier for the machine. I have 10 year old machine so it actually needs it now. Thermal past has worn away.

If you are bit paranoid about cooling (for laptops you should always be) a 3rd party seller that can help out is http://www.xoticpc.com/ they offer stronger cooling that's above any manufacturers default; cost more obviously. ( $35ish.) Can customize them too, an they have more than just Alienware (seems the 17x 980m is sold out for the moment sadly.) there too pretty much every gaming laptop brand.

An AW fanboy so I want to bully towards them(pretty colors!), but you have to get what is right for you. If there is another brand that's cheaper that seems to be the better performer go for it! AW is about gaming and doing whatever you want with the power that machine gives, and it's not the only one that can do it. Just don't get a macbook pro...I will not support that at all, and they actually run as hot gaming laptops without the power! But in all I just want to help a fellow gamer out. Giving you the most tools that can use to make a judgement.

u/Chrisagu28 · 1 pointr/Alienware

I wouldn’t recommend that one. What I recommend is the same one I bought from amazon. #1 on the list of coolers, quiet, cools the laptop quite well, and inexpensive. I wish it had red leds since that is the led theme I have on but for the performance, great reviews and cost. I can’t complain. Also fits the 17” too. I am using it on my 13R3 and it has tons of space so should be able to fit just fine.

Check it out

Is this the one ?

Innovation Cooling Diamond 7 Carat Thermal Compound - 1.5 Grams https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0042IEVD8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_qX9mDbXH8B2EY

And one more thing. Is it better to spread the paste evenly with the tool which they might give or a small drop and then set the heat sink ?

Sorry about the questions 😅😅

u/GeneralAtrox · 1 pointr/Alienware

After your comment I actually went ahead and bought a stand for the laptop as I was noticing the temperatures getting pretty high.

Anyone wondering, the laptop sucks air in from the bottom so keep it free is important.

So thank you very much.

u/Titus303 · 1 pointr/Alienware

This is the one I use. Keeps your laptop very cool and 4 fans? You can turn off the top or bottom. Great silent fans..

u/TipJay · 2 pointsr/Alienware

Personally, I have had some problems with temperatures. I just posted a question about it here, so I don't know anything yet. I'm getting around 85 degrees under load, with the fan at 100%, but even then, the noise levels haven't bothered me all that much.

The website where I bought mine is Danish, and can be found here. I'm pretty sure this is the same one though.

This sleeve was posted earlier bu u/Gooner_here and several found it to be a perfect fit for the computer; I certainly did: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079HYKPCW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_p4M6Cb7F6WP87

I have a 13R3 coming in soon and had done some research earlier, probably should have posted it somewhere - a 1TB 850 EVO m.2 was on sale for $250 last week on Newegg (it comes w/ a Watch Dog 2 code as well). For those looking for the best bang/buck now though, I'd go with the MX300. It performs surprisingly well for a budget SSD.

(Although that Microcenter deal for the Intel 600p looks great if you live near one.)

Besides the HyperX, you can also get an 8GB stick of Crucial Ballistix DDR4 2400 for about $7 cheaper.

u/LongStabbyThing81 · 1 pointr/Alienware

Sure. I don't know if you will get the same results but mine worked out well. the cooler and the elevation helps a lot.

You bought this one correct?

So the temps never get above 70? See I'm torn. This and a hybrid 980ti are around the same price. the 1070 seems more likely to be future-driver supported over the 980 ti. Even if the 980 ti, the hybrid especially, is a cool, bench-marking beast.

Anyways, post your benchmarks(4k witcher 3, fallout 4, whatever else you have or can do) and max temps. I personally don't like the idea of a gpu scraping 80 degrees C. Which this seems like it would do.

u/DeWat4 · 1 pointr/Alienware

I use a laptop cooling pad, specifically this one-Cooling pad

I don't turn on the fans, even though it is an option. The temps are way better when I'm using it.

u/senorhorhay · 1 pointr/Alienware

I had an r4, bought it second hand with bad thermal issues. I put it in the shop to get the fans cleaned, fans oiled, cpu re-thermal pasted and then bought a laptop stand (like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00WRDS8H0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_vyhhDb3AAWE18)

This worked absolute wonders, I would recommend putting it in the shop to do the above, I’ve made about 7 PCs and consider myself pc savey- but it’s a long process - it even took the pc shop 3 hours to do, only charged me the agreed hour though.

Don't bother with the 16 GB ram or the 512 GB SSD. It's much cheaper to add them in aftermarket. Dell charges you $100 extra to go from 8 to 16 gigs, but a 32 gig DDR4 kit @2400 mhz is only $140 from Amazon. A single 8 gig stick will set you back only $40.

I personally ordered the 6820HK/1070 stock config, and I'll be adding in ram and hard drive space later.
