I commented earlier in the thread but I'm a strong proponent of Soylent as well.

I suggest trying both the powder and the liquid. Powder is much cheaper($1.83 powder vs $2.63 liquid per 400kcal), but that won't do you much good if it just sits in your pantry because you don't want to clean the container to mix up a new batch and wait for it to sit.

If you end up going liquid, it's now available on Amazon Launchpad - https://www.amazon.com/Soylent-Ready-Drink-Food-Bottles/dp/B01EUEIL3E?ie=UTF8&*Version*=1&*entries*=0

If you set up a subscription for either the powder or the liquid on soylent.com, you get 5% off. If you subscribe to the liquid on amazon, it's 5% off, but if you subscribe to 5 items on amazon it goes up to 15% off.

I know this looks like a shill post, but I really have no association with soylent other than finding their product to be a real benefit to me. With that said, check out /r/soylent as well, because one thing that really makes me love Soylent is they really don't care about people making DIY copies or even competing with them, so there are a lot of soylent clones out there and if you're not in america some of those other ones will be easier to get. A lot of the clones have more flavor options which I'd love to try, but if you are in america, most of the clones are much more expensive to ship here.

You can of course flavor soylent yourself however you want as its very neutral, both powder and liquid. With the liquid I like to squirt in some chocolate syrup and just shake it in the bottle. With the powder, flavored protein powder works well if you know what you're doing (e.g you arent depending on the bottle being 400kcals /trying to use it to track your intake closely), and blending the powder with some fresh fruit is a good way to go. Though I most often just drink it as is, it's not bad, it's just not good, it's just..what you need.

Red: A Crayon's Story

>A blue crayon mistakenly labeled as "red" suffers an identity crisis in this picture book by the New York Times–bestselling creator of My Heart Is Like a Zoo and It's an Orange Aardvark! Funny, insightful, and colorful, Red: A Crayon's Story, by Michael Hall, is about being true to your inner self and following your own path despite obstacles that may come your way. Red will appeal to fans of Lois Ehlert, Eric Carle, and The Day the Crayons Quit, and makes a great gift for readers of any age!

>Red has a bright red label, but he is, in fact, blue. His teacher tries to help him be red (let's draw strawberries!), his mother tries to help him be red by sending him out on a playdate with a yellow classmate (go draw a nice orange!), and the scissors try to help him be red by snipping his label so that he has room to breathe. But Red is miserable. He just can't be red, no matter how hard he tries! Finally, a brand-new friend offers a brand-new perspective, and Red discovers what readers have known all along. He's blue! This funny, heartwarming, colorful picture book about finding the courage to be true to your inner self can be read on multiple levels, and it offers something for everyone.

>It's easy to find a replacement. There are four standard sizes.

So if you're looking for the best available model, and only one size fits, you're instantly ruling out 3/4 of microwaves on the market for something that has almost no bearing on performance or other features.

Hmmmm.

>Never actually had to look for one or has lied about looking for one because they assumed it was hard, so they don't know it's trivial.

Or they care about the appliances they get and know that limiting yourself to 1/4 of available built-in appliances is like saying you can only buy a car with, say, a given length that's within 4 inches of an arbitrary set vehicle length. But, odds are that the best vehicles aren't going to fit that arbitrary specification. And that could be a real problem that could cost you (tens of) thousands of dollars.

You can say that it's possible to find a good vehicle that meets those specifications, but if you actually care about the quality / performance / specifications of the appliance or vehicle you're getting, you should still acknowledge that limiting working models to <25% of what's on the market is...what it is. Sure, you can find a POS model that fits. Enjoy buying a new microwave every 2 years.

Which brings us to your last point:

>Has a really, really old appliance (like 50-60+ years old) that was before these standards existed.

If you buy decent quality appliances, they last for longer than 5-10 years, and it will have been discontinued. Any replacement you find will have to be secondhand or it's remodel time.

>That's like saying "It's so hard to find the right sized case for my iPhone 8." just because cases for the iPhone 6 and 7 exist.

It's more like saying "I wish I hadn't bought these women's jeans because no modern smartphone will fit into the pocket."

You can always go to a tailor to get real pockets installed, but you could've avoided the problem in the first place by buying pants with real pockets that could be used to hold actual objects. And while it's true that some tiny smartphones exist, limiting yourself to the handful of ~limited-capability models that fit is...limiting. You'll probably be able to find something that kind of works. No one's disagreeing with that. But not all [appliances] are created equal, and you're essentially pushing the idea that size is the most important feature of a [microwave, fridge, whatever], when it affects performance and reliability about as much as the color does.

Ok, this is from the book 6 Glasses that Changed the World. It's been a while since I read it, so take it with a grain of salt.

IIRC, it was more like they added wine to water in order to make it taste better (since, as you mention, they had shitty sources of water). In addition, the wine of the time wasn't as subtle, I guess. Their yeast wasn't as specialized, so it left more sugars, and it was sweeter and more cloying. So wine improved the taste of water and water improved the taste of wine. Finally, part of it was to avoid getting drunk. As Romans, they considered themselves the height of civilization and took pride in being cultured.

Of course they got drunk- they're human! They had parties, like everyone else. I'm sure you've heard of Bacchanals - literally a festival to the god of wine. At their parties, they had a guy who was in charge of maintaining the ratio of wine:water as the night went on, I'm guessing he made it stronger.

BTW, I'd recommend the book. It's a quick read and very entertaining,

Milk? Milk does not provide all the things Soylent does. There's also the fact that a huge portion of the population is lactos intolerant to some degree and can't be replacing meals with milk.

Cost:

Ensure Powder: 14,000 calories is $68 - 0.485 cents per calorie.

Soylent Powder: 14,000 calories for $54 - 0.385 cents per calorie.

Jevity Powder: 0.48 cents per calorie

Soylent drink: 0.67 cents per calorie.

The cheapest Ensure drink, Vanilla: 0.54 cents per calorie.

Jevity drink doesn't state the calories contained so I can't give a cost estimate, and there's nothing about it on their website.

Jevity and Ensure are both produced by abbot nutrition along with, i'm gonna copy paste this.. : EAS® | EleCare® | Ensure® | Glucerna® | Hi-Cal | Jevity® | Metabolic | Nepro® | Osmolite® | Oxepa® | Pedialyte® | PediaSure® | Perative® | Pivot® 1.5 Cal | ProMod® | Promote® | Pulmocare® | Similac® | Suplena® | TwoCal® HN | Vital® | ZonePerfect®

I had no idea all that stuff was made by the same company.

When I was in college, I ate so much cereal, the ones in the bags!

Right now I'm using Schmilk (chocolate). I do weight training so I add protein (double rich chocolate, but they have tons of flavors); really speeds up the healing process, no muscle pains the next day.

Benefit of Soylent was that you didn't need a blender, but it's recommended for Schmilk, so I got an immersion blender. Felt a bit bummed that I had to buy an appliance, but it's so much faster and better than shaking a half gallon of liquid!

I backed Soylent's Kickstarter, and it came with this pitcher. It's so awesome that I bought a second one, so I can have one in the fridge while I wash the other in the dishwasher. I fill 1/4 of the pitcher with milk, add 4 meals worth of Schmilk/protein, little more milk to cover the powders, and blend right in the pitcher. Add some more milk, blend again, and top off. It's ready to drink right then or chill overnight (my preference) -- done for two days!

The ready-to-go bottles of Soylent seems convenient, but it's a little less than what I'm drinking now (414ml vs 500ml), it won't save me any time if I want to add protein (adds a lot of flavor/variety for me), and costs a bit more.

Well to be absolutely fair it does exactly what it says in the advert:

https://www.amazon.com/Portable-Personal-Rotation-Adjustable-Office/dp/B07QZ1JP38/ref=mp_s_a_1_14?keywords=usb+desk+fan&qid=1570846736&sr=8-14

"USB Table Fan Portable Mini Personal Desk Fan with 360 Rotation and Adjustable 3 Speed for Office, Travel"

u/alienangel2 · 7 pointsr/CrappyDesign

Usually you just need the alpha numeric id for the product somewhere near the start, the rest seems useless.

Like for this long ass address I copied from the address bar: https://www.amazon.com/Pet-Craft-Supply-Mewnicorn-Boredom/dp/B07JMGKVD1/ref=sxin_5_pb?keywords=cat+toys&pd_rd_i=B07JMGKVD1&pd_rd_r=98eb7f1b-dc8d-4be8-8ecd-a3d684c77222&pd_rd_w=MuJXT&pd_rd_wg=vAxyB&pf_rd_p=471566b3-2454-4c77-b9e2-5715d3250806&pf_rd_r=P5797JCQFZVKBW2VK90B&qid=1565179036&s=gateway&sprefix=Cat+

All you actually need is the B07JMGKVD1 bit. So you can paste that into amazon's search to pull up the same product and it'll find it.

Or you can delete all the junk except that i'd and the "/dp/" bit and it works as a link to the page: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07JMGKVD1/

I wish they just made it easy to copy like that though.

Yes, in this context, "a square tilted by 45°" and "diamond" are essentially equivalent phrases. I thought it would be fairly evident from context that I was not referring to crystalline carbon or a 2 dimensional graphical representation of a cut used for crystalline carbon.

However, if I were to formulate a response similar to the following for every comment I made on Reddit, I wouldn’t actually be able to read nearly as much on Reddit:

> A functionally useful approximation of an isochrone from a single origin point via bipedal locomotion in a city with a primarily rectilinear arrangement of interspersed paths of conveyance between impassible erections can be constructed on a representation of a specific area without accounting for the specific local features of that area by taking the average walking speed of a human, multiplying it by the desired increment of time, then marking a point that distance from the origin in each of four directions parallel to the overall rectilinear orientation of the paths of conveyance, then connecting the points to form a quadrilateral with its diagonals parallel to the overall layout of paths of conveyance, sides of equal length, and corners meeting at right angles; this resulting shape also would meet the qualifications of, in increasing order of specificity, a parallelogram, a rhombus, and a square.
>
>This approximation is most useful if the representation it is generated on is to scale and is as close to a flat 2-brane as is practical to construct, despite the underlying topology of the area varying due to being a combination of the result of a complex set of geological events occurring on an object with an approximately oblate ovoid shape which have further been modified by construction activities. In this particular area, the vertical variances are negligible in regards to the applicability of the approximation, as the constructed impediments to motion causing largely non-linear paths results in a significant distortion in the distance of travel required, while inclinations and declinations are unlikely to affect travel speed more than already has to be accounted for by variances in walking speed of individuals when compared to the average used for the approximation. Placement of the origin point is ideally located adjacent to one of the paths of conveyance, as placement elsewhere is likely to result in increased travel time to a path of conveyance not accounted for in the approximation.
>
>A square of this orientation, where the sides are at an angle of 8/τ radians to the overall orientation of what would locally considered on the representation to be horizontal and vertical (although the orientation in the area represented would result in the sides of the square following bearings of approximately 55, 145, 235, and, 325) is often referred to as a diamond, as is the case for road signs^1, chemical hazard warning signs^2, and rankings of ski slope difficulty^3.
>
>In some contexts, an equilateral quadrilateral, or rhombus, is referred to as a diamond as well, and is commonly used as an indicator of suit on bridge or poker style playing cards^4 and is also used for rankings of ski slope difficulty, particularly when multiple copies are needed on the same sign^5. The term polyiamond was even back-formed to refer to a shape that can be formed by aligning the sides of an equilateral triangle in an 2 dimensional plane, a specific case of which is the shape formed by two equilateral triangles and results in the name diamond using the naming convention employed for this class of shape^6. However in this case, its use would only be appropriate if there was an abnormal but regular reduction or increase of average speed in line with only one set of parallel paths of conveyance and not the other. Such a phenomenon would be highly unlikely in Alexandria, Virginia.
>
>Such phenomena being unusual in general, it was assumed that the preference for the square form of a diamond was implied, and I apologize for making any assumptions of any kind (even though they are generally necessary in daily life to avoid becoming mentally unstable due to excessive solipsism, which is why I don’t stop making them, and sometimes find myself apologizing for even reasonable ones).

On an unrelated note, at least they put a compass rose on there, even if it is not terribly prominent.

I own like 6 of these for just this reason. I don’t know what the top of this bottle looks like but there’s three different sizes and once a pump stops working I thread one of these things on and flip it over. MONTHS more use!

PS. I buy them for dirt cheap on AliExpress. ;)

https://www.amazon.com/Joyfay-Giant-Teddy-Bear-White/product-reviews/B00580KX2W

First review:

"Hideous! The legs are like 4 feet long making the bear look like a creepy gumby thing. I got this for Valentine's Day and would have rather had a cheaper more proportional bear...I mean this isn't even cute."

u/RaceMeToNeptune · 12 pointsr/CrappyDesign

Thermal fuses are really cheap and very easy to integrate. I don't think it is even possible for them to import a heater without a thermal fuse into any developed/developing country.

https://www.amazon.com/Hilitchi-Circuit-Temperature-Thermal-Assortment/dp/B0719DHV9P?ref_=fsclp_pl_dp_2

That one is around 0.2$ per fuse and it is on Amazon. Imagine how cheap it would be for a Chinese manifacturer to buy tens of thousands of these in bulk, in China, where these things are produced.

This is a repost. Supposed to say "Welcome, may all who came as guests leave as friends." From the last time someone explained it, it comes like this for the purpose of saving space while printing and shipping, and the end customer is expected to rearrange it appropriately.

Edit: what it should look like. Pulled from u/JeremyDaBanana 's link to the original post.

u/The_Paul_Alves · 1 pointr/CrappyDesign

Don't buy cheap chinese pencils or colored erasers. Get yourself a nice Staedler set and some decent white erasers.

A set of these for sketching: https://www.amazon.com/STAEDTLER-break-resistant-super-bonded-100-G12/dp/B0014E2S0Q/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=staedtler+pencils+set&qid=1572010245&sr=8-4

Or just get yourself some HB staedlers for drafting.

The top comment from a year ago:

>Here is what it is supposed to look like:
https://www.amazon.com/LUCKKYY-Welcome-guests-leave-friends/dp/B00X19PCH8

>Often, decals like this come with things rearranged to make the size of the sheet they are printed/die cut on smaller, because reducing the area of the material used reduces the cost. It is up to the user to re-arrange the pieces correctly, but in this case, it looks like they transferred it all on one go, skipping the step where you have to cut it apart and re-align it.

u/so_much_fenestration · 2 pointsr/CrappyDesign

The other reviews on the Amazon page are even more hilarious, especially:

I feel there should have been more emphasis on the lower portion of the teddy bear..... Where the emphasis is lacking is in the giant pendulous legs that haunt the lower two thirds of this stuffed freak bear. It appears to be some sort of bipedal giraffe bear hybrid. After we took him out of the box with my daughters, I expected it to hop up and sprint away down the street with a fingerless fist raised in victory. My daughter tries to hug the bear and she gets trapped in a serpentine mass of bear legs. She won't keep it in her room anymore because her friends won't visit because of the nightmares. Joyfay should sell some sort of amputation and patch kit for parents that want a more desirable short legged bear.

u/Ogren543 · 4 pointsr/CrappyDesign

This is a repost, and someone on the last thread pointed out that this comes as stickers and you have to put it together. It is supposed to look like this. Someone who didn't care/didn't speak english put it together.
