I've used AKG K52, AKG Q701, Audeze LCD-2 Classic, Audio-Technica ATH-AD700x, Beyerdynamic DT990 (600 ohms), HiFiMan HE400i (the revision), HiFiMan HE500, HyperX Cloud, Koss Porta Pro, Monoprice Monolith M1060, Philips Fidelio X2, Philips SHP9500, Sennheiser HD598, Sennheiser HD700, Sennheiser HD800, Superlux HD662 EVO, Superlux HD668B, Superlux HD669, Superlux HD681 EVO, Tritton Pro+ and Turtle Beach Ear Force XP Seven for gaming, and my recommendations for online/competitive shooters are AD700x and DT990, or HD668B if you're on a budget.

If you need sound isolation, then I recommend HD669 first and K52 second, but only if you need sound isolation. I don't recommend HyperX Cloud (II) because it has been surpassed by HD669, K52 and especially HD668B in sound quality.

Sound:

AD700x has a sound signature/profile with subdued sub-bass and emphasized treble. It has clean bass and a little harsh treble. It has a huge soundstage, excellent imaging, separation and clarity, and great detail retrieval.

DT990 has a sound signature with subdued sub-bass, emphasized mid-bass and very emphasized treble. The bass is clean. The treble is slightly splashy or overly sparkly and somewhat sharp. It has a huge soundstage and excellent imaging, separation, clarity and detail retrieval.

HD668B has a sound signature with subdued sub-bass, emphasized mid-bass and emphasized treble. It has clean bass and a little sharp treble. It has a large soundstage and very good imaging, separation clarity and detail retrieval.

Soundstage and imaging constitute positional audio. Soundstage is produced by the headphone and is how you perceive space and environment of sound, like virtual surround sound. Imaging is how accurately the locations of sounds/objects are reproduced. Separation is how you discern individual sounds from a range of overlapping sounds. This is only important in competitive shooters.

Sub-bass is how deep the bass goes and is where rumble comes from. For competitive shooters, you don't want this as it masks or overshadows sound cues. Mid-bass is where impact comes from. Generally, you also want as little mid-bass as possible, but this isn't a problem with DT990 or HD668B. How bright you perceive the treble, depends largely on how treble sensitive you are and what your point of reference is. In games, treble isn't as bright as it is in music.

Amplifiers:

These headphones should output loud volume levels for most people. If they don't for you, then the easiest solution is to use a USB sound card like Creative Sound BlasterX G1 or G5. G1 is the cheapest sound card I know of that officially supports PS4 and offers ample amplification for most consumer-grade headphones with the exception of the 600-ohm and maybe the 250-ohm version of DT990. For these, use G5.

It's possible to use an Astro MixAmp Pro TR or a Turtle Beach Elite Pro TAC with power-hungry headphones if you want those sound cards because of their game and audio chat balancing or other features, but it would require pairing them with a more powerful amp.

You can use a headphone amplifier and a DAC (digital-to-analog converter), but it's less convenient.

Some well-regarded options:

  • Audio-gd NFB-11.28 (both)
  • Audio-gd R2R-11 (both)
  • Audioengine D1 (both)
  • Creative Sound Blaster X7 (both)
  • FiiO D3 (DAC)
  • FX Audio DAC-X6 (both)
  • Mayflower ARC (both)
  • Micca OriGen G2 (both)
  • Schiit Magni 3 (amp)
  • Schiit Modi 2 Uber (DAC)
  • SMSL SD793-II (both)
  • Topping A30 (amp)
  • Topping D30 (DAC)

    Microphones:

You can attach an Antlion ModMic or a Massdrop Minimic to the headphone. They don't have an in-line volume control, but you can use gadgets like these:

adjustR, BENGOO, Fosmon, Insignia, Lucid Sound AdjustR

    Setup:

The ModMic attaches magnetically to a base that you stick to either earcup. The Minimic uses the same clasp system except with velcro instead. They're easy to attach and detach, especially the Minimic since it's modular. They have their own cable and operate separately from the headphone, so they're compatible with all headphones.

To connect the headphone and mic to the controller or other devices with a single jack, you need to use a TRRS Y-splitter. The Y-splitter must have three black rings on the connector.

You can connect the headphone and mic to the USB port on PS4 by using an audio USB adapter.

Sound BlasterX G1 anf G5 are plug-and-play. To use an amp and a DAC, you have to connect the mic to the controller with a TRRS Y-splitter or to the USB port on PS4 with an audio USB adapter, unless you use an amp that has a TRRS jack or a separate jack for the mic, like Mayflower ARC. Most sound cards have either of these. A sound card has an amp and a DAC built in and sacrifice sound quality for features. There's a common problem with reversed left and right channels when using USB DACs, so only use optical unless the DAC or sound card officially supports PS4. The headphone connects to the amp like usual. Amps and DACs can be bought separate or as combined units. You need a DAC because USB and optical are digital signals and PS4 has no analog outputs. If you get a separate amp and DAC, then you need RCA cables to connect them to each other.

To pair an amp with the MixAmp or Elite Pro TAC, it's probably easier to show you this image. This is a 3.5mm-to-RCA cable. The featured amp is Schiit Magni, which has been replaced by Magni 3. You can only use a separate amp, not a DAC and amp combo unit.

I'm almost out of space, so just ask me if you have questions.

I’m not sure what kind of price range you’re looking at, but the ones I got were these Sony SSCSE Dolby Atmos speakers. They’re currently $158, but were $100 when I got them during a holiday sale and I’ve seen them drop back to $100 since then.

They’re incredibly low cost barrier for entry at that price. They’re designed to be placed on the top of your front channel speakers and then bounced off the ceiling and back towards your listening position, or mounted. And to be honest, I couldn’t really tell how well it was working placed on the front channels. But then I mounted them on my wall instead (they come with the appropriate screws and frame to do it and you only need to drill into your wall to place them), it was the difference between night and day!! I kept a step stool in the room so I could occasionally jump up and place my ear to the height channel just to hear what it was putting out, and they carry quite nicely across the room. Here’s a picture if you’re interested to see what they look like size-wise and mounted.

The very first thing I did was check out some Atmos enabled content and I was literally blown away. The demo for “Forza Horizon 4” has a race with a jet flying overhead that passes by a few times. “Blade Runner 2049’s” opening sequence and title crawl through the fight with Sapper Morton was just outstanding. I played both “Rise + Shadow of the Tomb Raider” and there’s a bit in one where you’ve escaped via a hatch in a little hut and you’re crawling through the chest deep water and refuse below while the sound of several guards’ footsteps circle around overhead and above that you can hear their chatter.

In “Red Dead Redemption 2” I had logged out by a creek, and even though it wasn’t modeled for Atmos, I distinctly heard the sounds of several bird calls and the wind rippling through the trees above, rustling the leaves and branches and causing some of them to sway. It literally made me feel as if I were in a wide open expanse of forest, and swapping back to regular 5.1 was such a huge difference.

I honestly wasn’t expecting the height channel to be that big of a deal since it’s not often used, but when it is, it’s done to great impact (and you can have them pull some of the sound from the center to bring the audio up like it’s coming from the TV rather than under it, like I have my center positioned). You can see they take up very little space, and you could place them on top of something or create a less permanent mounting situation outside of drilling if you prefer. But if that’s what you’re getting from speakers that are $100~$160, it can only go up from there in terms of quality and presence. This is personal preference, but I prefer having 5.1.2 (with height channels) than 7.1 without them. (You might go to your local home theater store and ask them to demo both). If your system can support 7.1.2 then by all means, go the whole way... I just think you’ll feel a larger difference from adding the height channels before the side/rear.

Space was one of my main concerns prior to getting these (and I only did thinking that the space on top of my front channel speakers would be fine). I’m 100% glad I chose to mount them instead and I very much suggest that you do so as well, no matter what speakers you get. (The ceiling mounted Atmos speakers are a whole different animal, of course). If you have an XBOX One X, you can get a free trial of the Dolby Atmos app (it’s only a couple bucks to buy it after that). Netflix has a TON of 4K/HDR/Atmos content available, as does Vudu.

The PS4 is capable of playing Atmos tracks on Blu-Ray but doesn’t have a 4K player. And depending on your receiver, you’ll very likely be able to have the height channels trigger during normal DTS and Dolby Digital as well (if you set it that way). And as I said elsewhere, Dolby is working on upmixing non-Atmos content to become 3D sound and utilize your full system, which is awesome and I hope Sony adopts either or both the DTS:X and Dolby Atmos standards rather than creating their own (which the early info about the PS5 seems to suggest they’re doing). Happy gaming and happy listening! Sorry this is long but maybe you’ll find it helpful in some way.

Hey man, fellow PC gamer (For over a decade) and I just jumped into owning a PS4 about two weekends ago. I'm not looking for super amazing graphics, but rather games I have been missing out on. So I know how you feel. I've been vegging out on Destiny and I'm having so much fun.

> Pro vs Slim vs Standard. From what I understand via a quick Googling, the Pro's main advantage is 4K support (irrelevant to me) but the framerate isn't that much better and doesn't even apply to some games (true/false?); the Slim is the cheapest option; the Standard is... I don't know. Does standard have any advantage over slim?

Nothing is different from the OG PS4 and the Slim. The Slim is just smaller from what I understand. The Slim does come with the updated Dualshock 4 though. I owned a DS4 for my PC before and the updated DS4 has a light bar on the touchpad and the analog sticks are noticeably clickier when you push them in.

> New vs Used. I know it's going to vary widely by where I get it, but how "safe" is it to get a used PS4? This is assuming that there isn't a bundle with a game that I want, in which case I'd go with that.

I'm more on the side of getting a new system because I prefer new things anyway. I think the only thing you'll run into is wear and tear on the blu-ray drive and the hard drive. The hard drive is easy to replace though and it'll take any 2.5" HDD and even SDDs.

> I'm not a massive graphics enthusiast, but being on PC for so long with a somewhat-above-average rig, I notice low framerate. I don't care so much about, say, 50fps vs 60fps, but I notice 30fps or below and it makes me enjoy the game less. I know it varies based on the game, but overall how are framerates for PS4 games?

Framerates are definitely lower. I never disliked 30 FPS, but it does have that sluggish look to it. That being said, I could honestly care less. Before I owned my 970, I would sometimes lock my framerate to 30 FPS to keep it from feeling jittery from the frame drops. I never really cared about the whole 30 < 60 FPS argument, but 60 FPS is definitely better overall. It's a matter of preference. Now if a game drops below 30, it's really noticeable and there are a few games that do drop from what I understand. Digital Foundry is something I've always watched even before owning a PS4 just because I love seeing framerate differences between platforms. I will say this though: The Uncharted Collection feels and looks so nice at 60 FPS.

> When to buy. I probably missed out on stuff during black friday/cyber monday, but is there anything on the horizon (other than Christmas sales) that I should wait for? Any new bundles or special deals coming soon?

I got a Slim with Uncharted 4 for $269 (On Amazon) two weekends ago and I had it price matched at Best Buy. Amazon currently has it for $249 (The same model I got) right now and it can still be price matched at Best Buy if you want to pick it up locally. Not a bad price if you ask me.

> I'm going to be playing on my computer monitor via HDMI, because I don't have a working TV (all its ports got fried by lightning and so my TV is only good for watching cable - in other words, useless). This setup works fine for my WiiU, I assume it'll be fine for PS4 as well?

If it has HDMI, it will work! Only thing I can think of that can cause problems is HDCP content being restricted, but I don't know what your monitor is and I doubt it will ever be an issue. On another note, my Corsair Void Wireless RGB headset works on the PS4 as well. So if you have a "gaming" headset on your PC, there's a huge chance it will work on your PS4 if it's USB based.

Hope I helped man. I'm really enjoying my PS4 and I'm probably going to buy Stardew Valley for the third time tomorrow (Steam, GoG, and now PSN) lol. It's weird that I haven't touched my PC in a few weeks or finished Pokemon Moon either, but I've been wasting my time away with Destiny. I've been wanting to play it for years and I'm enjoying it so much right now.

Well, for general emulation of older system - your best bet might be a phone if you have a semi-recent model. Just get a blue-tooth controller cradle, and maybe even check to see if your phone can cast it's screen to your TV for full-screen. You can even emulate the Dreamcast on modern android phones via Reicast.

I prefer the Vita - but there's some caveats. Most importantly, you have to install custom firmware, which is against Sony's terms of service. I've never heard of anybody being banned, but it's possible at pretty much any time. So if you go that route, make a new account that's not tied to your PS4's library. Installing CFW merely requires you to be on official firmware 3.60 and under, and then visiting a certain site. The process is pretty much automated. A better option may be the PSP - which has a much worse screen, but better controls for playing classic games IMO. You don't need a PSN login for the PSP, so no risk of being banned, and CFW is as easy to install as starting up a game. The Playstation (Vita) TV is another good option which will let you use a DS4 (or I assume compatible PS4 arcade sticks) - but functionally, works the same as the Vita. They're pretty cheap - but memory cards are ungodly expensive for meager space. Thankfully, with the PSTV running CFW, you can use USB thumb drives - and the Vita can now use SDCards via a Game Cart converter. In all of those cases, you'll need access to a PC at least temporarily (or maybe you can do it on a phone if there's a decent FTP server program) so that you can download and move the necessary files over.

There's very few actual emulators written so far for the Vita, and most of the ones you'll want are accessed through a homebrew called Adrenaline - which basically turns the Vita into a PSP. They just released a custom bubble installer for Adrenaline too, that way you can just launch the PSP emulator you want right from the home menu without having to actually go into Adrenaline first. On the downside, since these are all running via the Vita's built-in PSP functionality - you're limited to the PSP's specs... which means it can only emulate up to N64 era games (PSX games run great, N64 - not so much). No Dreamcast emulation, sadly. Maybe later natively on the Vita, but that's going to be a stretch.

Couldn't say much about the homebrew scene on the Xbox 360, since I haven't followed it. I'm sure there is. There's also an actual potential good reason to get a (cheap) Xbox One - since you can sign up for the Developer Program which will let you side-load homebrew/emulators onto the system. It doesn't seem very popular so far, and will require a connection to a Windows 10 PC.

Overall, I'd say the best and easiest bet would be to get a PSP 3000 for on-the-go, or if you want a more arcade experience in the livingroom, and you want it cheap - then a VitaTV and a good PS4 Arcade stick. Just, again... make sure it's running Official Firmware 3.6 or lower. The necessary exploits won't work on newer firmwares.

Before we get into this, a lot of your questions are frequently asked and can be found with search. I don't say this to be mean, but that you'll probably find a lot more replies there than you might get in this one thread.

>Pro vs Slim vs Standard

Standard is retired. Slim replaced it. Same hardware. Pro is will do 4K with checkerboard rendering, which is a semi cheat but still looks great. Pro should also hopefully allow devs to hit 60fps more often in SP @ 1080, but the jurys still out. More on framerate in a bit.

>New vs Used.

I'm a fan of new, but if you can get gamestop of the like to give you some sort of warranty, that's up to you.

>I'm not a massive graphics enthusiast

This could be your easiest hangup. While some stuff can be 60, a lot of stuff ends up at 30FPS. That's unfortunate, but it's reality. If that's a huge problem, you might want to reconsider.

>When to buy

You missed the black friday stuff, but I think I've heard of the slim for $249? Here's an example: https://www.amazon.com/PlayStation-Slim-500GB-Console-Uncharted-Bundle/dp/B01LRLJV28

>I'm going to be playing on my computer monitor via HDMI, because I don't have a working TV

PS4 controller has an audio jack for headphones. Or you can get sony or other headsets for the ps4 (golds are good). HDMI for video is great.

As someone who gamed on the pc for decades, I love my ps4 for exclusives as well as it's "pickup and go" gaming. I hardly game on the pc since the ps4 came out, I love it that much. It's not for everyone, but I've had a very positive experience.

u/cocobandicoot · 1 pointr/PS4

The PS4 only supports digital connectivity (old school analog A/V plugs have finally bitten the dust). So for video, it sounds like you're good -- HDMI will work great, as you mentioned your monitor supports it (alternatively an HDMI to DVI setup would also work for a monitor).

But for audio, that's another story... The PS4 uses digital / optical audio cables (also known as a TOSLINK connection). You need a decent speaker system for this type of connection. You mentioned that your monitor doesn't even have speakers (does it have an audio out port though? if so, you may be in luck and can just plug a pair of cheap computer speakers or headphones in). Otherwise, you pretty much only have three options:

  • Option 1: Buy a [digital-to-analog converter](
http://amzn.com/B004C4WPXA), along with a digital / optical (TOSLINK) audio cable and an [RGB-to-headphone style adapter](
http://amzn.com/B000I23TTE). From there, you can get a cheap set of computer speakers (even something simple like these would work). Attach the cables together and plug in the speakers and boom -- you'll have sound. (Note: if the PS4 is anything like the PS3, you'll need to enable "multi channel output" under its sound settings.)

  • Option 2: Buy a set of speakers that support digital / optical (TOSLINK) connections. We're not talking cheap computer speakers like before; these will likely be a pretty decent sound system to support digital / optical (TOSLINK) connections. ([This is the cheapest sound system](
http://amzn.com/B002V3R2SM) I could find on Amazon that supports it -- it's a surround sound / DVD Player combo, in case you're interested.) You'll also need to buy a digital / optical (TOSLINK) audio cable, of course, which I linked to in the above example.

  • Option 3: Or, your final option... just buy a TV. It'll be bigger than a computer monitor, it'll have the built in speakers, and it'll look nicer. TVs have come down in price significantly the last few years, so maybe you can pick one up for cheap on Black Friday or something.

First, yes, an SSHD will work in the PS4, but is it worth it? I don't think so.

I think an SSHD will have mostly no noticeable benefit in a PS4. An SSHD has 8GB of solid state cache designed to speed up an operating system on a computer. The PS4 OS will reside in RAM, so no benefit there. The 8GB cache will learn the important files for a particular game, and that game will see an improvement until you play a different game. Then the entire contents of the cached will be flushed and the system will start over caching the new games contents. So every time you play a different game, the caching will start over. Do you play more than one game at a time?

Remember that SSHD's are 5900 rpm drives. I think it would be MUCH better to get a 7200rpm 1TB HDD.

  1. It's a reasonable cost... ~$100
  2. Storage increase
  3. A minor speed increase

The seagate slim external 2tb you can buy on Amazon or Best Buy for 79-99 dollars. You just have to pop it out its external case, but that's easy. Only decent priced 2tb that's gonna fit for a good price. Now if you're going 1tb you have a lot of choices in the ssd,5400,7200. I think the best rates one on ign and most games site was this suprisngly, even up against hybrids and ssd. Based on all the reviews I've seen the travel star out does the hybrid, out does the stock one and fits comfortably up there with some top end ssd load times by 2-5 seconds...though limited to 1tb.The seagate slim is slightly better load time than stock but nothing significant, just more storage. I'm in the process as well and you really have to ask if you want slight speed, big storage or somewhere in the middle. There's really no affordable ssd that covers all bases right now.

It's coming out in March but I highly recommend [Kingdom Hearts 1.5+2.5] (https://www.amazon.com/Kingdom-Hearts-1-5-2-5-ReMIX-PlayStation/dp/B01M32FMUL) which includes 4 full games. I shared this series with my younger siblings and they love it

u/marshallu2018 · 1 pointr/PS4
  1. Should you replace it? That's up to you and how many games you think you'll have. Right now I'm doing fine with the 500 GB, but I don't have a ton of games yet.

  2. Is there an improvement in speed/performance? I believe the PS4 uses an HDD. SSDs are faster than HDDs, although I'm not sure if you'd notice a huge difference in speed.

  3. Is it easy? Yes, it's very easy. If you can use a screw driver and know how to follow easy directions for formatting the drive, it's stupid simple.

If you do plan to upgrade the drive in your PS4, I recommend the Nyko Data Bank as it allows you to use bigger drives than what the PS4 can use (as long as you don't mind your PS4 having a big bulge on one side). There's a ton of information on the subject in the sidebar of this sub, so just go through it and you should find all the information you need.

I paid full price for these ($80) because I needed a compatible headset for VR. That and my big ass head don't play very well with a lot of headsets. The padding on the band is nice and comfortable, but what really shines is whatever material they used around the cans. I haven't had a pair of headphones that have felt that good and don't cause irritation when wearing glasses.

Turtle Beach Stealth 350VR

They are extremely comfortable and versatile, use them for PS4 (VR and through the DS4), PC, and phone. That being said I used my previous headset for 5+ years so I haven't tested the water much so some of these things could be pretty standard. The amplifier stays charged for a pretty long time (Call it every other time I charge my DS4) and with the input cable being modular I can keep the long PC cable hooked up and swap out for the shorter cable for the DS4 and I can take the mic out if I just want to listen to music or something.

With them currently on sale at Amazon, it's a no brainer in my book.

u/thewhiteman80 · 3 pointsr/PS4

See alot of people recommending the Sony gold headphones and they're great headphones but the hinges are plastic and tend to break after a couple years of use (mine did a month ago). Now I'm using the hyperx cloud headphones 80 bucks on Amazon and they're awesome the build quality and comfort are much better than the Sony golds . These aren't wireless though.

We just got the Turtle Beach Stealth 350VR for my son's birthday. He loves it. Don't worry about the VR thing if you don't have VR. That's mostly the design of the headband to be a little wider to accommodate VR headsets. But it looks and feels fine using it regularly.

The best thing about it is the mic monitoring. He can hear his own voice (if he wants to) which helps him to figure out how loud the mic is. He's also shouting less which is much nicer for everyone else in the house. The headset is on sale for $60.

Best Play Station 4 purchase I've bought is modular charging station I don't have to mess with the micro USB wires anymore. You just plug in a small clip that goes on the charging port of the controller, plug in the base into the 2 usb charger ports on the ps4. There is 2 slots and all you do to charge the controllers is set them on top of the port. The front base has 2 lights that turn on (depending on which slot you set controller on) that lets you know it's charging.

The only down side is you can't game and charge at the same time. Just buy 2 controllers and switch them out.

I've had 'em since a month or two after ps4 release and they work great. I need something like that for my phone.

For US redditors, it's $35 on [Amazon] (http://www.amazon.com/DriveClub-PlayStation-4/dp/B00BGA9ZZ4/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1418529257&sr=1-1&keywords=driveclub). I just got it today. It's more arcade-y than sim, but it's pretty good. The new weather effects are damn beautiful. The dynamic weather effects, especially the rain and snow, will blow your mind.

Thanks, but I chose the CTA grip.

I read the grips guide in /r/Vita's FAQs and for about $25 less (not interested in the battery feature) than the Nyko, the CTA seemed like my best option.

Sure, man! Here it is

Everything went ok. I've already done that with my now deceased PS3. Sony hasn't changed things.

The original hdd had around 360GB of data to back up. It took me around 3hs to back up. Restoring the data was much faster, 1h40min.
Good luck!

Because Apple are fucking weird and have to make everything needlessly complicated.

The reason is because the "poles" (areas between the black lines) on the plugs are wired differently for Apple products. On most products, it's Left > Right > Mic > Ground. For Apple products, they reverse the mic and ground. This is why most earbuds on Amazon will have you pick between two versions, one for Android, one for Apple, or have separate listings for each.

Apple always has to make their products nice and "special." Your best bet is to just buy a replacement cable for another brand of headphones with the in-line mic. The headphones will work perfectly fine because the plug that goes into the ear cup is still Left > Right > Ground.

Here's a decent cheapo for $7.

Get Kingdom Hearts 1.5 + 2.5 when it comes out at the end of march for PS4. It has the two main games (Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2) which are what you'll want to play.

Sure, there a bunch of other games included that you could play in chronological order, but really you're there for KH1 and KH2.

Then if you've played through all of that, you can get 2.8 to tide you over before KH3 comes out.

u/Chouonsoku · 12 pointsr/PS4

Every Kingdom Hearts game will come to PS4 in 2017

Wolfenstein is the most fun shooter I've played in a long time. Check it out. Also don't skip over DOOM. Definitely skip the multiplayer but the single player campaign is brilliant. (you could also probably get Wolfenstein for really cheap now)

If you have limited space and only 1-2 controllers, I’ve found the Nyko Modular Charge Station to be a good product. The one I have is different than the one pictured in the product listing on Amazon, but still works great.
If you watch Blu-rays or stream movies/TV with your PS, the PDP Bluetooth Enabled Media Remote Control is really nice to have. Sadly, it doesn’t work while playing games, as I had hoped in order to automate my gameplay of Injustice 2.

First of all, you don't need PS+ or extra controllers to play this single player game.

Thus to "just play this one game" (his words) it would cost $250 for the PS4 (and that includes Uncharted 4 bundled in!) + $60 for HZD, for a total of $310 + tax. Not exactly $600.

I suppose this assumes he has a screen to play it on and a house/electricity to power it (which he should, given that he's said he plays PC games with his wife).

u/OregonViking · 1 pointr/PS4

Unfortunately as your edit says because of the PS TV, this feature that could breath new life into the PS3 will not happen. Though wondering if down the line some very talented people could figure out how the 4 is streaming to the Vita/PSTV & make a bootleg app for the Ps3- but its a long shot & you would probably lose online abilities.

However the good news is that the PS Tv isn't that expensive if you really want to do something like that. It comes out at the end of October. http://www.amazon.com/PlayStation-TV/dp/B00KVMHSUM

u/princelokiofasgard · 1 pointr/PS4

This is my all time favorite charger. takes up both USB ports but you can unplug it if you need them. You plug a small thing into your controller and leave that in forever. then you just put the controller on the indent and it charges. no plugging things in and out all the time. If you have 2 controllers, one can be always charging and you can switch back and forth if one dies. Makes gaming way more fun when you don't have to plug in and sit super close to the PS4.

u/Grayfox215th · 1 pointr/PS4

The process was super easy and only took me maybe a half hour total. The only long part is re downloading all your digital games. I opted not to back up the actual games when backing up the system because that would have taken forever.

u/wisaaka · 3 pointsr/PS4

Ok, you're probably going to get a bit of flack for asking about headsets, but I'll let you know what I've figured out.

I have the same headset. However, I'm also using an audio/video receiver for surround sound. When I plug in my headset, I use the 360 for USB power, the chat cable goes to the controller, and the green plug goes into the headphone port on my receiver. I bypass the L/R audio patch cables entirely. This makes my setup easy for day one. I have the 2.5mm-3.5mm adapter and I'll just be able to switch out the 360 for the PS4 and everything will work.

If you do not have a receiver, then you may be able to use a converter to get game audio and be fine.

I have one of those, with a 4TB drive. Works like a charm.

http://www.amazon.com/Nyko-Data-Bank-PlayStation-4/dp/B00UA55ZRI

Note, while it costs $35, and the cheapest 2TB drive is currently about $70 the total is slightly more than gutting the external 2.5in drive from the usual recommendations.

However, if you need more storage, the above will take any size HDD and past 2TB they are a lot cheaper than the 2.5in ones, and you don't have to worry about thickness.

u/MetalForever86 · 2 pointsr/PS4

I'm running my PS4 to my monitor, and my PC hooked up to it as well. I have my PS4 hooked up with a DVI to HDMI cable (something like this), and my PC is hooked up to the VGA with a cable hooked to an VGA to DVI adapter going to my graphics card. Only issue with the set up, is needing the digital converter box to get audio, but I just have a toslink cable (like this) going from the PS4 to the converter box (like this) and then just a RCA to 3.5 male cable (like this) plugged into the side of one of the my speaker in an AUX in port.

Everything works fine and I can swap between my PC and PS4 just with a button push switching between DVI and VGA on my monitor. It is a bunch more cables, and the converter box needs to be plugged into an outlet but not much that can be done about that. Also I can't vouch for everything I linked, just used them as an example of what I'm running though most of it just the stuff Amazon posted as the newer version of the stuff I used when I bought them a couple of years ago. You also mentioned already that you are getting a pro, just know that the PS4 will have to be a Pro or an old version of the PS4 for you to run digital audio. The slims don't have digital audio ports.

u/l33sarFiveFour · 5 pointsr/PS4

There's no 4TB Firecuda, I'm afraid, and I'm pretty sure 4TB drives don't fit PS4 without an extender that you can buy separately:

https://www.amazon.com/Nyko-Data-Bank-PlayStation-4/dp/B00UA55ZRI

It doesn't look nice but if space is what you need, this may be your only option. Or invest in a good external HDD and use it to install games to. External HDDs go all the way to 8TB powered from USB port.

u/TheSeed2point0- · 10 pointsr/PS4

I bought one and mine broke within a month or two. The R1 button broke loose in the controller and does not function any more. I never dropped the controller or did anything abnormal to cause the issue. Plus I didn't like the R1/L1 and R2/L2 buttons so much.
That being said, I bought the Strikepack FPS Dominator extension thing that clicks on to your normal DS4 controller, but only has two triggers, one on each side. I really like this device, but it has some tricky nuances that make it not for everyone. It is strictly wired, and you have to unplug the USB or mini USB and plug it back in every time you turn on your controller/console, and same goes if you use a USB headset (the controller has to be plugged in first, then the headset). I play at a desk on a monitor, so it's not a big deal for me, but if you sit on a couch and play on a TV or similar setups, it might not be for you. But it's much cheaper at $40, so it is less of an investment with some of the same features.

u/GoogleNoAgenda · 2 pointsr/PS4

Officially? Nothing has been said.

Unofficially? None of the hands-on review of the controller and/or console have mentioned it, which they definitely would have if it was an option.

Just plan on getting something like this, then you can keep the rest of your rig the same.

Yes and no. Most externals can be put into things and most internals can be put into something for external use.

Well that I know of so far there is only two ways you can split the audio out of an HDMI.

  1. You can get an HDMI to component converter. But since your using a monitor. Not a TV you probably don't have component input. The Monitor probably had HDMI/ DVI/ VGA inputs. (Also converting HDMI to Component you lose 1080p to 1080i)

  2. The ps4 does have digital audio you can get a digital audio converter to Analog R/L (Red/ White) or Aux (3mm Headphone Jack) https://www.amazon.com/Digital-Optical-Analog-audio-converter/dp/B004C4WPXA

Honestly I'm not a fan of HDMI they made it simple plug in which is good, but a pain to split the audio out (I split my Audio out to a 7.1 Surround Sound) my surround system is a bit old now but works perfectly, so I don't see a reason to upgrade, tho it has classic Analog R/W not the new digital audio.

It's the same drive, just the original version of that external drive had these in them, which are highly recommended, but now they have has this in it (which is what I have)(you can tell the difference because the seagate logo on the external case is different), but again they are still highly recommended, but might last longer simply because it's not a 3-4 year old drive.

Edit- It's also the cheapest way you can get those drives.

Personally, since I dont need another soundbar, I am just going to output through a 7.1 headset with a mic built in, so I can use it with my tablet and for blu-rays as well. YMMV.

u/EvilMonkeySlayer · 1 pointr/PS4

Negligible, I bought a 250GB drive and a USB caddy. The idea is whatever I'm currently playing is installed on the SSD.

The 250GB is enough for a few games or a couple of really big ones. (I had RDR2 on there for a bit which was a big space eater)

Probably about £50. (I'd have to dig through my orders to get the prices)

Larger SSDs I use on my pc and laptop.

You don't have to replace your drive, you can just put the SSD in a caddy if you don't mind permanently using up a USB port. That way you've still got the storage of the original PS4 drive for anything that doesn't need the SSD speed. (indies etc)

EDIT:

For example, usb caddy £7.89.

Samsung 250GB SSD £49.59

Something like this may help you out. I haven't bought it yet so idk if it actually works. I don't see why it wouldn't though.

Currently listed on Amazon for April 1st, of course that doesn't confirm it but it seems likely, unless it was rumoured for April 1st before Amazon listed it. http://www.amazon.com/DriveClub-PlayStation-4/dp/B00BGA9ZZ4/

I'm based in the UK so you may need to find them on US Amazon or something, but these drives all fit the PS4.
Samsung M9T 2 TB

Seagate Spinpoint M9t

Alternatively you can buy an external hard drive that is the same as those mentioned above but is enclosed in a case. You can break the thing out of the case and then replace it with your old Hard Drive so you then have a 500Gb external hard drive too. Instruction on how to do that here

u/mintorment · 1 pointr/PS4

Here's an official guide for swapping HDDs: https://support.us.playstation.com/articles/en_US/KC_Article/Upgrade-PS4-HDD/

And if you go for 2TB (which I recommend), I'd say about $100. I personally used this hard drive and it works flawlessly.

If you don't wanna re-download everything, you can back everything up to an external hard drive and restore it to the new internal one. I believe that guide shows how to do that too. If you do that, everything will be exactly how it was on the old drive, just with more storage.

u/xBTGx · 1 pointr/PS4

you can only upgrade to a larger internal hard drive. Currently the PS4 doesn't support external hard dives.

With that said, use this quide: https://support.us.playstation.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5107/~/upgrade-ps4-hdd as it comes directly from Sony.

This is the same guide i used to swap my hard drive and had no problem following along.

Comment if you need help for choosing a new hard drive.

Can I instead just use the audio coming from the DS4 with headphones? Or should I buy [this] (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004C4WPXA/ref=cm_sw_su_dp) and have [this] (http://www.digitaltrends.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/turtle-beach-ear-force-x12-review-cables.jpg) hooked up whilst using [this] (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000I23TTE/ref=cm_sw_su_dp). I know it's pretty much what you said above, but still.

u/the_good_doctor946 · 1 pointr/PS4

I bought this internal ssd along with this enclosure to make it an external drive. Works just as well, but costs a bit less.

u/MolotovMan1263 · 9 pointsr/PS4

The game is still $35. For this price along with the weather patch, it is worth it.

u/zoahporre · 1 pointr/PS4

Upgrade the hard drive.

Get a 2.5 inch firecuda, take original hard drive the ps4 comes with and buy an external enclosure.

u/Commander_Cain · 1 pointr/PS4

You could always get a DataBank, Not that I have ever used it but it will allow a 3.5inch hard drive in there.
Again I'm not sure how well these work, Amazon has a 4 star review so its a option.

u/ZebraMuffin · 2 pointsr/PS4

If you don't mind waiting for the physical version to ship, Amazon has it available for $35

If the only thing you need a new display for is your PS4, I suggest getting a monitor instead of a TV. Monitors tend to have lower response times, which makes the difference for games, especially shooters, and are generally better for gaming.

I have had a BenQ GL2760H (27'', 60Hz) monitor for the past 5 years and it hasn't failed me yet *knocks on wood*. Although I would probably recommend getting a 24" display, 27 is a little too much for playing video games sitting at a desk, imo.

If it were me buying a new display, I probably would get this, although I'm a little biased towards BenQ based on my experience with my own monitor. What you want to look for is at least a 1920x1080 (1080p), 60Hz (up to 60FPS) display with a low response time/input lag (1ms).

u/juniorspank · 3 pointsr/PS4

I'd say get this because the DualShock 4 is a solid controller as is.

u/AHarmlessFly · 2 pointsr/PS4

This

I have had this Since Jan, no issues, seems like things run a little faster.

u/jasonnjester · 7 pointsr/PS4

To add one to an existing controller, you can buy on of these contraptions that u/Azerius recommended:

https://www.amazon.com/Collective-Dominator-Controller-Adapter-playstation-4/dp/B01L8QHXJA

or send it to a controller modding shop, there are several online, including Scuf.

there's also these crazy mutant-alien atrocities made by avenger that simulates this kind of functionality using levers lol:

https://www.avengercontroller.com/product/avenger-reflex-ps4-now-available/

if you think that thing is crazy, check out the xbox ones...

You could also frankenstein it by finding a mechanical button, mount it under the remote and solder it to the contacts that you want it to mimick

u/mechanical_animal · 2 pointsr/PS4
  • Monitor with HDMI

  • External speakers

  • PS3/PS4

What you need is an optical to analog R/L audio converter ([an example] (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004C4WPXA)). This hooks up to your speakers coming from the PS3/PS4.
u/nintendodirtysanchez · 2 pointsr/PS4

This will do what you need Portta PETDTAP Digital Coax and Optical Toslink to Analog Audio Converter https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005DIRI6I/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_LHlPub1X0ZVC1 you'll need to get and optical audio and rca cables to connect everything.

u/skanadian · 2 pointsr/PS4

Your audio options are HDMI or optical, the PS4 doesn't output an analog signal. You need a receiver to convert the digital signal to analog, or just a cheapy converter like this one.

HOWEVER, you can get analog output from the controller. There's a setting to change the controller from "chat audio" to "all audio", but then you need your speakers plugged in to your controller at all times.
