Don’t listen to the people commenting on this negatively. I have scoliosis and have tried everything, EVERYTHING under the sun to manage back pain. This device corrected my posture within a few days and has reduced my daily back pain from about a 7 to a 2. The device doesn’t “correct” your posture inherently, but rather helps you to remember to correct and shows you good technique so that you know how to do it yourself. Yes you absolutely need to work on it independently, but this helps so much starting out.

Posture Corrector for Men & Women... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DKHTKP3?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf

The reviews are mixed, but if you’re of average size it should be ok. It’s worth a shot for 15 bucks.

Made this account just to leave this comment.. first Reddit post from a lurker woo! Hope it works out for you.

Edited to add that I didn’t do much research before buying as it was an impulse buy. There may be better out there with better design/ materials etc., but this one has worked out just fine for me so far. It is slightly annoying to wear, but definitely worth it.

u/cherrydog · 1 pointr/Posture

Hi - I was suckered into buying the very same one and had the very same results! Honestly my posture has only improved significantly through a few months of physical therapy - this was after months/years of trying to do it on my own. If you can find a place/facility near you, it's definitely worth at least a few visits so you can learn about what exercises to do and whatnot.

But if I had to pick one piece of equipment to buy, I'd pick the foam roll, something like [this].(http://www.amazon.ca/Incline-36-Inch-Density-Extra-Roller/dp/B00KDZF552/ref=sr_1_1?s=sports&ie=UTF8&qid=1449784370&sr=1-1&keywords=foam+roller+36+inch)

It really helps to give your spine the flexibility it needs to get out of its hunch, but it's an item you'll have to commit to using every day for many weeks. On the plus side, it starts to feel really good after the first or second week --- good luck to you.

u/MoonbeamThunderbutt · 2 pointsr/Posture

Nice! Good luck! This is the stool I have but anything like that would work. Just definitely keep your regular chair around if you decide to try this because you'll definitely need to take rests. When you first start out, your rests will probably even be longer than you're able to hold yourself up for. My level of ache in the beginning felt like I was moving heavy furniture for hours every day.. It was pretty hellacious.. But, just remind yourself that muscle soreness is proof you're going hard, and you WILL get stronger if you keep pushing!

u/hankbaumbach · 1 pointr/Posture

It's a bit pricey at nearly $60 but I got one of these memory foam/bamboo pillows last year and it's pretty awesome.

https://www.amazon.com/Snuggle-Pedic-Ultra-Luxury-Combination-Adjustable-Hypoallergenic/dp/B0725349FN/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=bamboo+pillow&qid=1556198652&s=home-garden&sr=1-4

To be honest, when it first arrived it was a little too thick but they have a zipper that lets you easily remove some of the shredded memory foam so you can get it to the size you want.

u/shinkansennoonsen · 2 pointsr/Posture

I second the idea of lower back support. Research as much as you can. A pillow will help establish a neutral spine in the car.

Also, for your desk, you can try to sit on an inflatable cushion that will make you sit upright. It is very difficult to sit poorly on this and it will engage and help strengthen your core. This should help a lot. Core exercise, 10 minutes a day will also help. Exercise will be your path to true pain relief.

The two most important things for those of us stuck at desks all the time are 1) taking regular breaks to move and 2) setting up your space as ergonomically as possible.

Taking breaks is the easiest one. For me, I am constantly drinking water (a couple liters a day), so that means every hour or so I need to get up to either use the bathroom or refill my water bottle. If I don't actually get up and move around, I'll at least check myself once an hour. Sit up straighter, move the neck about a bit and get back to work.

Proper workspace set up is the most helpful in the long run. Monitor placement: you want your monitor set up so the center of it is at eye level - if it's too low (which is what usually happens), put some old books or something below it to raise it up. You also want it at a good distance from you. The trick I was taught by a physical therapist is to sit in your chair and straighten your arm - the monitor should be at your fingertips. My office chair is not ideal, so I invested in a low back support cushion. It makes sure that I'm not flattening out my back too much (usually by pulling my hips forward and slouching). I'm also short so I had to get a cushion to put under my feet since they don't rest flat on the floor - however I doubt this applies to most people.

Good luck, I find that being conscious of your posture and your setup is the biggest part, and you're well on your way to that.

Lots of beginners have reported getting a lot of value from Missy Vineyard's book, "How You Stand, How You Move, How You Live". I've read it myself and it explains the concepts clearly, and really goes into the core of what Alexander Technique is, which is much more about how you use your mind rather than how you try to use your body.

The best way is to get some hands on teaching though, which can be challenging because of cost and proximity to a good teacher. If you can find a good teacher and can afford to do at least say 6 - 10 lessons then you'll probably notice is a big change.

Do you work out? Kind of looks like you do. Many people your age have a tendency to work out the "show" muscles too much like the chest which leads to imbalances and tight chest muscles will pull your shoulders forward.

Have you tried stretching your chest and lat muscles before? Also have you ever done any sort of foam rolling? I found that by stretching my chest and lats I am more inclined to keep better posture.

Also consider using a back posture corrector to help train yourself how good posture should feel like. I run a YouTube gaming channel so I am constantly behind a computer, I wear one of these and it helps remind me to sit up straight. Not a substitute for back exercises but nice reinforcement. Here is the one that I use.

You'll want to find one like this that puts your neck in a neutral position while laying on your side. This is the best way to sleep for your neck so you should be aiming to do this most of the night.

I have a couple of these, one that is more firm, which I used to use...

I switched to one that is more soft because I got a softer mattress. My shoulders and body sink into the mattress more now and that made my head too high with the firm pillow. So I had to get a softer pillow to match the mattress firmness and keep my head in a neutral position.

So that is the kind of thinking you'll need to do.

Also note some of these have 'cooling gel' inside them which is awesome if you like that. Here is an example: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073P4M54X/ref=sspa_dk_detail_3?psc=1&pd_rd_i=B073P4M54X

Does having your feet up high make it easier for you to sit because you are then leaning a bit more forward, taking pressure off the low back? You could do this by using a stool under your feet, but that might actually end up causing tension in your shoulders, neck and upper back. Because those parts are pushed forward, they are no longer supported by the spine, which will eventually cause pain.. I am thinking the best way to ease the lower back and also support the entire back, (middle and upper) would be to place a cushion behind the low back, or get a chair that is specifically designed for lumbar support. Below is a link to a chair cushion. Might be worth checking out.

Pulling your shoulders back contributes to the lumbar extension. What you want to do instead is externally rotate your shoulders, and that will generate stability for your upper body instead of "forcing" stability by bending backward (smashing vertebrae together).

Physical therapist Kelly Starrett described his "bracing posture" in his book Deskbound. There are basically 5 steps to creating a correct posture.

  1. Stand with your feet under your hips, pointing straight.
  2. Clench your glutes to reset your pelvis in a neutral position.
  3. Clench (slightly) your abdominals to "hold" this pelvic positioning.
  4. Screw your legs into the ground externally to grip the floor.
  5. Rotate your shoulders externally to generate positive tension within the upper body (you can do this by raising your arms laterally at first). Edit: Done correctly, this will tend to point your thumbs forward.

This guy does an OK job at the sequence, but Starrett's book is where the good info is.
