I've done this a few times, if you put some patience into it you can come out with some really nice stuff.

Chemically stripping it is by far the best way to get rid of the old finish, like /u/anti-apostle said clean it with stripper and steel wool until you get all the old finish off. A tooth brush you no longer want gets all the nooks and cranes.

Then sand it with increasingly finer sandpaper until you have it as smooth as you like. One trick when you get to really fine grit (220 or 320), run a damp cloth over the stock then sand again, the water will raise the grain and make the end result smoother.

Tru oil is by far the easiest to refinish, it's quick, looks really nice and is a tough durable finish: http://www.amazon.ca/Birchwood-Casey-23123-Finish-3-Ounce/dp/B001I14QUU/ref=pd_bxgy_s_text_z

The other way I've had success is to stain (minwax has all kinds of colours, check out home depot) it then seal it with some exterior poly: http://www.minwax.ca/wood-products/exterior-clear-protective-finishes/minwax-helmsman-spar-urethane I've got some of that stuff on a savage 24 and it's never given me any problems, and the gun routinely gets covered in mud while quading.

You guys helped me out with my first non-face-to-face purchase a few months back, and as promised, this is the result.

Ruger MKiii slab side competition target model. I was told by the seller it was an unmodified safe queen, and when I got it, it did not disappoint.

Put in the Volquartsen trigger / accurizing kit and my certainly-not-competition-grade-but-seems-ok manual trigger pull gauge is putting it at a little under 2lbs. I've managed to adjust the trigger so that, while there's still a little take-up, I have zero over-travel. The kit comes with an extended bolt release, which I like a lot.

Was not loving the factory target grips it came with, so went with some spalted mango wood grips that this guy from Costa Rica makes and sells via eBay. 2 weeks shipping to Canada. Very, very happy with them.

Topped it with a TRS-25.

Took her to the range, put in a 1.5" 10 shot group @ 15 yards with bulk ammo. Happy.

>There is no legal precedent on how the room must be constructed that I'm aware of, but common sense dictates that you go to reasonable lengths to make it difficult to break into. That would include an exterior door (solid core and steel doors would suffice) and a dead bolt at minimum. I would also recommend reinforcing the door frame.

Thank you, this is exactly what I'm looking for, I'm going with a steel door, with a proper deadbolt with something like https://www.amazon.ca/gp/aw/d/B01GWF2R70/ref=pd_aw_sim_60_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=GGV9M5HB2RYXMYAECK7D&dpPl=1&dpID=51N7tq2kyNL with the plaster reinforced with plywood.

>If the room is a safe, it could be argued that you could store loose ammo in the same room as the firearms but IANAL. To answer your question, though, yes the ammo can be put into a locked safe, cabinet, or ammo can inside the room.

I kind of figured, but since I'll have an empty safe, better safe than sorry.

Perhaps you have already read this, but I have recommended this book to a lot of my friends after it was a prize at a workshop dealing with a toxic and potentially violent work situation. I realize that this was nothing compared to your experience, but self protection is self protection.

The Gift of Fear by Gavin de Becker. He is a security professional who provides services to people who can afford to pay his ( presumably high) prices. e.g. You will see de Becker security trucks around movie productions in your town.

I'll definitely get hell for saying this because, but I disagree with the notion that a person must spend as much or more as their gun on a scope. I've used my Bushnell 3200 ($250 CAD) for quite a while now and I'm able to get my rifle out to 600 yards or so on a good day, and around 500 yards on a bad day. I've tried nicer scopes and while there's undoubtedly a difference in glass quality, I use the 3200 specifically because I prefer mil-dot ranging with 1/4 MOA windage/elevation adjustments.

I can go into further detail if you'd like, but basically using a mil-dot scope in conjunction with MOA adjustments allow a person to estimate ranges with just their scope. No expensive rangefinders, no dependency on electronics whatsoever- that's why I use the mil-dot + MOA system.

Here are two videos explaining each-- Ryan Cleckner's explanations are perfect for anyone new to shooting.

  • Understanding Mils

  • Understanding MOA

I'm convinced that the whole "spend an equal or greater amount on a scope than your rifle" ideology began as a not-so-subtle marketing tactic that ended up with a cult-like following. The same goes with the whole "two is one, one is none" mentality with guns/knives/etc. If you can spend a lot on a great scope, go for it-- but if you can't, a scope like the 3200 isn't going to cripple your shooting abilities. Technique is far more important.

I just recently got this kit from Amazon. It's a little pricey, but when I think of all the times I've misplaced specific jags or brushes and had to replace them I think it's worth it. www.amazon.ca/gp/aw/d/B00I81LC9G/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1523715547&sr=8-4&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=allen+cleaning&dpPl=1&dpID=41qRn%2BJ-GEL&ref=plSrch
It has everything you'll need and lots of room underneath for cleaning products as well as Allen keys, punches, bore snakes, whatever else. I like it because it helps me stay organized, and I need all the help I can get in that department.

I got this; however, it's not motion activated. Needs infrared so I need to wave my hand in front of it. Overall, pretty happy with it.. magnetic, bright, and rechargeable using the same cord as my phone.

I'm super happy with it, I was messing around with it today and it's in basically perfect condition. Just needed some sun. It's the slightly older version of this, same features and movement: http://www.amazon.com/Citizen-JR4051-54L-Sailhawk-Japanese-Quartz/dp/B00KCF82VM

I'm really enjoying this length of pull that feels optimized for someone 4' 11", I'm liking the look of this butt pad, anyone know if it's any good.

I picked up this Otis Kit form Amazon
It's a little pricey now but i snagged in on sale for about $40 and it's pretty great. The brushes don't stay in the foam very well but it all zips up in a compact little pouch and takes up no room at all.

u/Tyman98 · 1 pointr/canadaguns

Have a look at this video

My opinion only: most budget heavy duty safes are still easy to break into with modern day tools. Buy a security camera that sends motion notifications to your phone and point it at a simple, cheap bolted down cabinet. Being aware of break ins and calling for help is much more valuable in my opinion

S.O.C has some really nice back packs.

This is what I have.

This is what I want

They're expandable, which is what I really like. When I'm gone away on trips I can fit a massive laptop in there, along with all my other goodies for the long flights.

As a range bag I can fit my pistol case, ammo, ear pro, targets, BEW, holster, extra mags, staple gun, phone, and anything else I need. It's all a little tight though, thus why I'd like the bugout bag eventually...

Just need to get to Kuwait's BX to get it... They do make a pistol range bag but I really like the conveinence of a full back pack.

Most of us I think use Hoppes for solvent and oil. Patches don't really matter so grab whatever and make sure you have a cleaning rod that is long enough with a bronze brush and a jag or loop end. You can get a .30 caliber cleaning kit maybe like this or get a universal one if you intend to expand right away.

Cleaning in general is straightforward and we all seem to have our own rituals about it so just go about it the way works best for you.

This is pretty good for the money. And a 3-9 will be good for 300m easily. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0033CO3L4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I have the 4.5-14 mild dot version of this one on my Rem 700. I've been shooting long-ish range with it without issue.

Believe it or not, but you can get some on Amazon depending on what you're looking for. I got these last year and they're pretty good.

I like to use the Otis pull through cleaning kit. I normally use hoppes 9 after a range visit and depending on how much I shoot a firearm I occasionally soak it in Wipe out

I pretty much never use a brush any more with this cleaning method, it's easier and quicker I find than scrubbing with a rod.

u/NorincoPlinko · 3 pointsr/canadaguns

Hoppe's synthetic blend, the smell is almost non existent and it is non-toxic.

bronze 30 cal brush

Use a wire instead of a rod...., or a boresnake.

the bolt... read your manual, generally very very light oiling, like one drop goes a long way.

Edit - derps.
