By default, the top button of the Oasis flips the page forward and the bottom button flips the page back, no matter which side (left or right) the buttons are on, so that when you set the device to horizontal mode (with buttons down) it is the right button which flips forward and the left which flips back(as in a book, going from left to right).

In settings you can swap the buttons, so that the top button flips the page back and the bottom flips the page forward, with the left flipping forward and the right flipping backwards when set to horizontal mode (as in manga, going from right to left). If you do so, you can comfortably hold the oasis in one hand with the corner is the cup of your hand, and flip the pages by using your thumb on the bottom button. I have the smallest hands of anyone I know, and I can still do this comfortably.

You can also keep the buttons in the default layout and hold the device one handed easily, putting the side of the device with the buttons more or less into the center of your palm. Since the device only goes into horizontal mode if you specifically go out of your way to do so, you can hold the device basically horizontally while laying down in just this same way, with the side of the device in your palm. You can even do this while having the buttons swapped, but in such a case you need to move the device up the palm so that your thumb is in position to hit the bottom button rather than the top.

I've never had a paperwhite, but I have had 8" tablets for reading, and not having to touch the screen to swap pages is actually super nice. The only time I touch the screen is to see dictionary definitions.

I would recommend a case, if you want to hold the device one-handed. The cases make the Oasis easier to grip (compared to the metal), more comfortable temperature wise (metal gets cold), and can also make the corners more comfortable in the cup of your hand. I am currently using an Ayotu case (https://www.amazon.com/Ayotu-Silicone-Soft-Kindle-Oasis/dp/B07FD5QTSV/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=ayotu&qid=1568255626&sr=8-4&th=1 to be precise). It is the only case I've had, but I am very happy with it.

I bought the Kindle Oasis 2 when they went on sale, so I can't speak on the glowlight, but if you are looking for a kindle with a larger screen than the paperwhite the Oasis is good but (of course) expensive.

I'm certainly very interested in the Kindle Voyage. I'm upgrading from my slightly damaged, but still useable Kindle Keyboard. So there's certainly some great things that are shiny and so tempting:

  • Flush Screen - Yay! No more dust/crumbs that fall between the screen and bevel!
  • 4 gigs of Storage - Yay! Finally the same size as my Keyboard again!
  • Haptic buttons - Yay! Finally a return to page turn buttons again! The fact that it's haptic is pretty shiny and fancy.
  • 300 ppi - Shiny and fancy screen!
  • Adaptive Light - It'll be a nice and shiny upgrade from my keyboard with the case with the pull-out light in the corner.

However there are some things which are giving my some concern for pause:

  • Price: $199 for the base model, $219 not to be advertised to.
  • Glass screen: It's certainly premium, however, what about scratches, smudges, cracks etc? This will most likely mean I'll have to get the Official Screen Protector which will cost me $30
  • Case: What are the details on the Origami Case that will set me back $60? Edit: Apparently it's a leather cover that attaches magnetically to the back of the Voyage, and wraps a bit around the side, but not all the way around. The lid flips over the top, and can fold to be a stand. There's also a Non-Leather Origami Case for $45. Edit 2: Here's the link for all the available Kindle Voyage Covers.

So if I'm looking at all of this together, I'm seeing a $309 price tag for a Wifi, No-offers, with Case and Screen protector? That's certainly giving me cause to pause, especially when the 4gig PW2 is at least $60 cheaper, or even more depending on accessories...

As much as I want to just jump on it, I think I'm gonna have to be patient and wait until reviews and customer feedback comes out on what's needed, what issues there may be.

Edit: For those interested in the non-E-Ink, Kindle also announced new Kindle Fire HDX (8.9"), HD 7", HD 6" and HD Kids Edition

Case-wise I went for Amazon's own. Magnetic closure for auto-on/off, slim, comfortable to hold, pretty solid and durable. (To be fair, there weren't many other options back when I got my Paperwhite.)

It sits in an outside pocket of my daily laptop bag so it's exposed to a fair amount of knocking around (and sometimes moisture if it rains) during my commute. Hasn't failed me in 2 years: no damage to the Kindle, no marks on the case.

Unlimited probably isn't necessary, especially if you're new to building up an ebook collection. I'm pretty sure there was a post here recently from an Amazon employee (ex or current) saying he felt Unlimited wasn't worth it due to the "bargain bin" level of most of the content. That said, I've never used it myself and to each their own.

There's plenty of free, cheap, and public domain content available both on Amazon and elsewhere. You can learn to sideload non-Amazon books pretty easily. (Though personally I've never had the need.)

  • Project Gutenberg is the well-known free/PD archive but there are plenty of other sources.
  • /r/FreeEBOOKS and /r/ebookdeals are a good start on reddit.
  • Check Amazon's main Kindle eBooks page every so often, and/or sign up for reminder emails. They have daily deals, monthly deals, and regular $1.99/$2.99/$3.99 and other sales on a bunch of books.

Also: For more popular books (those with an actual cost!) start building up an Amazon wishlist dedicated to ebooks. Use eReaderIQ to import said wishlist and track prices. The site will email you whenever a book drops in price, either by a particular amount or past a threshold you set. This is the primary way I buy popular books that normally retail in the $8-13 range -- I have plenty of content to keep me occupied in the interim, and I'll snag those more expensive books when I get an alert that they've dropped to the more reasonable $3-$5 range.

If you want to read a raw, true story about someone who was imprisoned at 6 years old for decades when the King of Afghanistan was grandly betrayed by someone in his inner circle, my book, SHACKLED: A Journey From Political Imprisonment To Freedom, is free on Kindle and other e-book platforms.

I wrote "SHACKLED: A Journey From Political Imprisonment To Freedom" by interviewing my grandfather for several years.

Those years of interviewing him and bonding together are what led to the creation of this book.

Here's a link to Kindle if you want to download and read.

If you'd like to review afterwards, I'd be honored.

I love my leather lighted case, nice and thin so I can easily take it and my Kindle wherever I go and now I can ready pretty much anywhere and anytime.

I also have this skin, it adds a bit of color and helps it stand out a bit more without being too flashy.

Content wise, one of the first things I downloaded was H.P. Lovecraft's complete works and its still one of my favorite books on my Kindle. I never cared for reading any sort of short story before but now with a Kindle I love them. They're perfect for when I'm waiting for something and have 5 or 10 minutes of downtime throughout the day.

Just went back to double check, and mine is actually the Omoton: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B016V09YHC

Same price, and looks very similar, although the back and the latching mechanism do look slightly different. Looks like mine has fewer total reviews, so up to you which route you take since they're the same price, but I do think you'd be happy with it.

Edit: FWIW, I honestly don't find this case to be super thick/heavy... certainly not anymore than the official Amazon case, probably about the same or very marginally less. I don't think you could find a case any less bulky without it being a mere skin and not an actual case.

u/JBaby_9783 · 2 pointsr/kindle

This is a good Kindle. My mom loves it. She has the the black model. I got her this case in black. I was impressed with the fit. For $10 it’s super awesome.

u/garylapointe · 1 pointr/kindle

I've looked at something like https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07KM2BDPP/ but $239 is a little steep.

I keep hoping for a discounted older version of something to try out for $99 :)

I'd mostly use it as an ereader, but I wouldn't mind being able to check my mail or news outside on a sunny day (throw a bluetooth keyboard in there and I could be being productive without the distractions of a laptop or full-color tablet). I'm also wondering if it might do PDFs a bit better (faster).

u/mon_dieu · 1 pointr/kindle

The asking price of $40 seems pretty absurd, but you can get like-new used ones through the amazon marketplace for $10-$15. I got one that way and I'm perfectly happy with it.

u/caliburnzhi · 1 pointr/kindle

Do you mean this one? The have that at Dick Smith as well.

I think its best to get a good case to protect my Kindle and I do really like leather.

u/dxm06 · 1 pointr/kindle

I think that the cover is the first (and only) accessory you should purchase for your Kindle. There are hundreds of covers available, but I think that Amazon Kindle Paperwhite Leather Cover is a really solid cover that most people like. The price was $32 just a few days ago, but is at $40 now.

In addition, I picked up one of these covers ($30) for a friend's daughter on her birthday, and I was impressed by the build of it. It feels really sturdy, and has an antique feel to it. However, it does not feature the auto-on/off when you open the cover, which the aforementioned Amazon cover has.

u/SirKolbath · 1 pointr/kindle

Yes, I have this case. It covers the back and closes like a book to protect the screen. I don’t have a clear screen protector like on my phone and iPad, though. (This cover also puts the Kindle in standby mode when it is closed. I don’t think it fits the Oasis, though.)

u/pa-guy · 4 pointsr/kindle

Get a case. One of my cases opens up and has a strap for your hand to make it easy to one-hand the kindle. The other case will auto turn on/off the kindle as the case is opened. I kind of wish I had a hybrid, but either one of them is better than no case at all.

Other than that, I've been a happy Paperwhite user for some time and don't really use any other accessories, other than the power charger.

u/cryzed- · 6 pointsr/kindle

Check out the section that says "Brilliantly crisp display" here, so I honestly doubt it, especially with the Amazon ebook readers that always successfully managed to completely eliminate glare. It seems very unlikely that they would suddenly introduce the new "flagship" of the series with such a huge drawback.

u/f1del1us · 1 pointr/kindle

I have this one. It's very well fitted and protects it well, as well as allowing you to take it out completely.

u/wanderjahr · -4 pointsr/kindle

This looks aimed at a different kind of animal. The marketing on the Voyage page is pretty masculine compared to the all female marketing paperwhite. Don't know why I noticed that, but I did. Looks sexy, but not enough to justify replacing my Paperwhite. Kinda want to get my hands on the Voyage to check it out though.

u/gnebgnome · 2 pointsr/kindle

I got the paperwhite version of this. I actually mostly got it because I'm vegan, so I didn't want real leather, but it's also cheaper and lighter than the official case, and the durability has been great. u/nermal543 · 1 pointr/kindle

I'm not sure how to tell if it ships internationally, but I've had an official origami cover for my Voyage for years and I love it:

u/scorpionMaster · 2 pointsr/kindle

Only good ones I've found Are Dawkins' The God Delusion and America's Test Kitchen: Pancakes and Waffles. Second one is a bit borderline on the "science" genre, I suppose, but it's better than nothing, right?

u/kalicapp · 1 pointr/kindle

I bought this cute little one and I love it!!!

Ayotu Water-Safe Case for Kindle Paperwhite 2018 - PU Leather Smart Cover with Auto Wake/Sleep - Fits Amazon The Latest Kindle Paperwhite Leather Cover (10th Generation-2018),K10 The Boy and Fox https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01E8K9ZJ4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_2cbBDbMQQ7WHQ

u/alienangel2 · 1 pointr/kindle

I bought one of these for 9 bucks. Looks nice (to me anyway), turns the kindle on and off with the cover opening and closing, somehow seems to make it much easier to hold with one hand, and seems to protect the thing - although the harshest thing I do to the kindle is leave it adrift in my backpack.

u/o0oo0o_ · 2 pointsr/kindle

Advantages of the Paperwhite: It has a lighted screen, it has a higher screen resolution (that she likely won't notice when reading with larger font sizes), and it feels more substantive to the touch (less like plastic).

Now, other than that, I don't see the problem with the "regular" Kindle. It's not readable in the dark, but she's used to that if she's currently reading only printed books.

If I were you, I'd look at officially refurbished Kindles before looking at used ones. The issue there: Amazon is reporting out of stock until the 23rd. Also, it's listed at $56.00, which is slightly over your budget.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KDRQEYQ

Whatever you do, the "generation" is the most important in determining the potential for getting new features as they're released by Amazon. Most of the current models are all 8th generation, but the current Paperwhite is 7th generation.

Amazon frequently marks down new Kindles by $20 during sale events. During Black Friday sales, new Kindles were $30 off, making them $49.99; that's the cheapest I've ever seen them. That's not helping you now, but I wouldn't want you to purchase it used or refurbished now and then have buyer's remorse if they have an after-Christmas sale on the new ones.

u/terkistan · 3 pointsr/kindle

I don't currently see the Amazon-refurb model available yesterday, but a 3rd party seller has one for $23 in "acceptable" condition here:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/ol/B00492CIC8/ref=mw_dp_olp?ie=UTF8&condition=used

The cheapest Certified Refurbished model I see currently is a 7th Gen model from Amazon, $56:

The used/ refurb section is here:

I've bought this one and I love it!

u/Thtgrl- · 2 pointsr/kindle

I've had both types of cases and I don't think it makes much of a difference either way honestly. I do, however love my magnetic case that turns the Kindle on and off when you open/close the case.

This is the one I have, it's pricey and it doesn't fit the newest model, but if you search magnetic Kindle case on Amazon you'll find one that fits the newest editions. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008IJR79W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_-rCwCbMFC2Y53

Well PW4 is newer and lighter. I don't know about the light uniformity between these 2 devices.

Specs wise you can just compare them.

Sorry, I am often offline for days at a time.

Although it's listed as "currently unavailable", Amazon does still have a product page for it w/some nice pics: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B003ZUXVSK/

And yes, it took the charge! Apparently I was last reading the Red Fairy Book. It was weird, I kept wanting to tap the screen, but no! :)

That's what I use, and I love it. Bit expensive though, but I always found it worth it.

u/binaryhermit · 2 pointsr/kindle

I'm not who you asked, but I can. It's a bit of a tight fit though.
EDIT: Paperwhite 3 though, in a beat up https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FVU5VJE/

I do not use a case when I'm reading. When I bought my PW, I struggled with whether to buy a case or not. I had a Kindle Keyboard at one time, and I always felt that the case made it too cumbersome. It's a sleek device and supposed to be very light. So, I finally decided to just get a sleeve to keep it from getting dusty or scratched up when not in use. I bought this one, and I'm really happy with it:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00M2LG2WK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/kindle

If you're looking for a sleeve I recommend this one:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00M2LG2WK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

If you're looking for a case I'd get this one (but warning, its insanely difficult/annoying to remove)

I assume you're talking about the new 4th-gen cases for the non-keyboard models. The non-lighted cover was "Temporarily out of stock" for a while, and now it seems to be back:

I ordered an official slip cover for my Touch when it arrives next month, and it arrived right away:
