Are you referring to the "PS2 to HD" as the converter?
https://www.amazon.com/KOBWA-Video-Converter-Output-Monitor/dp/B01IDC1DXY/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1509645424&sr=8-4&keywords=ps2+to+hdmi

If so, I would not recommend it if you are looking for the best quality video! Because resolution outputs are limited. I'll explain later more on this.
In my experience if you are looking for the best video quality and don't want to spend a lot of money on an OSSC or XRGB mini to de-interlace 480i. I would just buy component cables and connect those straight to your HDTV or HD CRT if you have it.
I've tested two types of component cables on my widescreen HD CRT. Cheap price ones from amazon and the Sony ps3 component cables. Right off the bat you can tell the build quality difference. The Sony PS3 component cables feel heavy duty and shielded vs the amazon Monoprice which feel lighter and possibly not shielded but I may be wrong on that.
As far as image quality goes they both look the same! I was hoping the Sony PS3 component cables would look better but they don't. This may be different on an HDTV, so keep that in mind. I need to test the difference.

https://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-6FT-Component-Cable-Xbox-360/dp/B004C4U1VI/ref=sr_1_6?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1509645667&sr=1-6&keywords=ps2+component+cable

https://www.amazon.com/Component-Cable-Pack-Length-Playstation-3/dp/B000VTX0MK/ref=sr_1_7?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1509645736&sr=1-7&keywords=sony+ps3+component+cables

On top of this, one thing I have noticed is that the colors look so much better on a HD CRT vs an HDTV when the PS2 is connected through component.
If you want to take it a step further I would buy a memory card loaded with FreeMCboot and download GSM.elf. This will allow you force games to run at 480p and there is a definite difference between 480i and 480p. Also you can play at higher resolutions like 720p and 1080i. Since you are connecting to a HDTV you can also force games to run at true widescreen with ps2rdmod.elf
At this point this is where the PS2 to HDMI converter has its limitations. You can't use GSM with it because it will not support anything higher than 480i, 576i, 480p. To be honest I don't think it has the best transcoder chipset to properly convert component to hdmi. I remember it looking blurry on my HDTV at 480i. I never tested it with games running at 480p. Also it has problems when you force games to run at true widescreen.

You will have to look into that further if you are interested.

>If your TV has component as well as RCA, you could buy one of these cables that you can plug into both the component and composite inputs (If both these inputs do not share a sound input, you'll need A 2-pack of these splitters to make it work)
>

I have a component cable (one which has red, green and blue YPbPr connectors and the yellow analog video in too) . My new tv doesn't have a component (or composite or scart) in though, so i need an hdmi converter.

Maybe I shouldn't have made a tldr that leaves this out, because i said so above ;)

>Then, depending on if you're playing a PS1 or PS2 game, you can just change the input on your TV accordingly between component and AV. Afaik this is the most elegant solution that allows you to enjoy the clarity of component video in PS2 games.

I don't think think having to use yellow video in for psx games is satisfactory when they were working with composite before. I'll try the upscaler.

>EDIT: If you're just getting into PS1 games on the PS2 you should also know you need a PS1 memory card to save your game.

I'm not just getting into them. I've played them on my ps2 for 18 years. :) Most of the time through composite (YPbPr), which my old tv supported (and all psx games worked like that).

>PS2 memory cards inexplicably do not get recognized by the game.

They have a different data format so (though you could argue they could have made so you can put a 128KB psx save file onto a ps2 memory card).

But thanks anyway

I understand. PS2 homebrew can be daunting if you’re not used to it. Anyway, they run in 480p. There is an incomplete game list that I saw before but I can’t seem to locate it now. From what I understand most games work without bugs though.

The easiest way to get a memory card with FreeMCBoot installed is to buy one online. They usually go for around €10 on eBay. When you start the PS2 with the FMCB memory card inserted, the FMCB menu will show up, with a few homebrew apps preinstalled. One of them is uLaunchElf. This is a file browser for the PS2 that allows you to copy, delete and launch apps. Insert a USB with GSM downloaded to it into the PS2. Then, using uLaunchElf, you can follow the tutorial I linked to above to copy it to the correct place on the FMCB memory card. Alternatively, you can buy this card with GSM preinstalled:

https://www.ebay.ie/itm/Free-MCBoot-1-966-FMCB-Playstation-2-16MB-Memory-Card-ESR-HDL-OPL-MORE/273485368998?hash=item3facff8ea6:g:fasAAOSwlTFdzX9J

Then you can follow the second tutorial I linked to and start GSM automatically. Alternatively, you can navigate to GSM blind (easy to do, just memories how many times you have to press up or down on the FMCB menu and press X to start it).

Before you get a memory card, if your PS2 is a slim, check the bottom of it for the model number. If it’s SCPH-90004 with a date code of 8C or later, it won’t run FMCB. All other PS2 models will run it.

Regarding the cable, an alternative is to get the PS2 component cable. Get a good-quality one for about €20, or HD Retrovision’s cable if you feel like spending more for excellent quality. Then get a component-to-VGA adapter, plug the red, blue and green wires of the component cable into it, and connect the adapter to your monitor. This will work exactly like the official VGA adapter. This is the one I use:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00213KFHW/ref=ya_aw_od_pi?ie=UTF8&psc=1

You’ll need speakers for sound, of course. I use this cable to connect my white and red wires (there’s two red wires on a component cable) to standard PC speakers:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07CZWVQ2G/ref=ya_aw_od_pi?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This will allow you to play PS2 games with excellent picture and sound quality. PC speakers are far better than a TV’s speakers.

I got one of [this](Logitech PlayStation 2 Cordless Action Controller https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0001VNNE8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_cMpGzbEK1NH3S) last year for $20, used but in pretty good condition. The controller is super comfortable and the batteries (AA) last for a very long time.

Make sure it states that it comes with the receiver in the description before ordering.

u/Qwertyfish01 · 1 pointr/ps2

I actually had this problem the other day! As you may know, the menus of most ps1 games are at 480p, but the game itself is at 240p, a resolution so unusual most TV's just ignore it. Over composite (also referred to as AV, RCA, and a million other names), it doesn't really care though.

If your TV has component as well as RCA, you could buy one of these cables that you can plug into both the component and composite inputs (If both these inputs do not share a sound input, you'll need A 2-pack of these splitters to make it work)

Then, depending on if you're playing a PS1 or PS2 game, you can just change the input on your TV accordingly between component and AV. Afaik this is the most elegant solution that allows you to enjoy the clarity of component video in PS2 games.

EDIT: If you're just getting into PS1 games on the PS2 you should also know you need a PS1 memory card to save your game. PS2 memory cards inexplicably do not get recognized by the game.

Monoprice 6FT 4 in 1 Component Cable for Xbox 360, Wii, PS3 and PS2 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004C4U1VI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_1aVBCbC13EWA3

I was going to suggest these but it seems like they’re out of stock. They are definitely worth the wait in my opinion though. Great build quality and they even work for systems like ps3/x360/Wii

Just a quick query since i dont use amazon much, is this:

u/mushroomwig · 3 pointsr/ps2

Personally speaking I'd recommend getting a component to HDMI converter (I use this one and it works great but there are plenty of other models to choose from if you want something else) paired with some nice quality component cables (either the official Sony PlayStation 3 ones since they work on the PS2, or the PS2 component cables sold by HDRetrovision), I went a couple of low quality third party ones before spending the extra money on the nicer cables, it's well worth it.

u/nssone · 3 pointsr/ps2

One of the recommended brands I saw in the past were Katana controllers. I'm not sure if there's a wired version, but Logitech made pretty good wireless PS2 controllers. You could also invest in a Brooks adapter and use with a PS3 controller since that's still pretty close the older DualShock controller designs and you can still find brand new ones fairly easily.

SD guide and links. (note I had to search for the model numbers on US eBay and or Newark.com)

I found these SD cards to work great with all my other system mods.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00K5CBBUG/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&th=1

SD Card Extension Cables, search on eBay tons of them out there.

3m Double Sided Tape. Found at most auto parts stores.
http://3mauto.com/products/tapes/3m-scotch-mount-molding-tape-03616.html

Use a nice strong set of wire cutters to nip off a gap in the tray, I used a dermel tool to grind down the rough edges. Use the wire cutters to trim out the plastic spot. Leave lots of extra tabs to grind clean with the dermal. Use a xacto knife to trim the cloth mesh. I use 3m Automotive double sided tape to hold down the Extension Slot. Layer it up 4 layers. Note in my pic I have the cable nice and tidy with a paper clip. I tried taping the loop with electrical tape. Those cables have no shielding and it caused lots of issues. Just slowly wad up the cable in the tray the looser it is the better.

u/_H3X1C · 2 pointsr/ps2

What you need is a high quality component cable, that alone will drastically improve the quality. The supreme solution is to combine a high quality component cable with a converter such as the OSSC to get a hdmi output. But these are on the pricey side but are amazing. So I'd get the cable first see if that's enough for you then go from there if you want to go the whole way.

I can strongly recommend this cable, its very thicckkk:
HD Retrovision PlayStation 2/3 (PS2/PS3) Premium YPbPr Component Video Cable https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07H3F94ZN/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_HrZrDb1N4DPB3

u/JMowPowPow · 2 pointsr/ps2

Alright, I'll have to splurge alittle more into my cables then... I had a feeling it was the cables. I would love to have an official Sony component cable but for $30 I have to pass lol. Thank you for the help! I think I have another set in mind, I'll attach them to gather your thoughts:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01B1BMH7A/ref=ya_st_dp_summary

u/taz420nj · 1 pointr/ps2

It's pretty simple to do the mod, it takes literally 5 minutes. Maybe 10 if you already have a few beers in you lol. You'll need this: https://www.amazon.com/Network-Adapter-Upgrade-Official-Adaptor-Android/dp/B07H7R3XDY/ref=sr_1_7?keywords=ps2+sata&qid=1568416144&sr=8-7

You just open up the network adapter, remove the old IDE board (1 ribbon cable), plug in the new SATA board, and put it back together (minus the bottom metal shield which won't fit because it is punched for the IDE connectors)

And yes, FMCB is just the exploit that allows you to run OPL/uLE/SMC/whatever off the hard drive. Again using that install method I showed you, it's not *required* to use the memory card, it just makes it faster. OPL can create virtual memory cards on the hard drive, so a physical card isn't required for that either, but FYI it is not recommended to use your FMCB card for games. If you want a physical card to save on, get a second.

u/blindyes · 1 pointr/ps2

Sweet, thanks. I'll get a better a better cord, I should have known not to go with off brand. This is the one I purchased.

u/Jamey4 · 1 pointr/ps2

Thank you so much!! :) Sounds like component cables might be the way to go for now then. If I was only doing PS1 games, I'd probably get SCART, but I'm doing a mix of PS1, PS2, and even some Gamecube games, and it sounds like component cables will cause the least amount of compatibility issues.

There is one last small question I have. I was looking at the PS2 component cables here, I noticed that the D-Terminal to Component Adapter that I can buy with the Framemeister has only 3 female sockets, when the PS2 cables have 5 cords. Is this normal, or am I looking at the wrong kind of PS2 cables or something?

Thanks again! :)

u/cuddlepuncher · 2 pointsr/ps2

I haven't done any side by side testing but I snagged these off Amazon and they are really good. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01B1BMH7A?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title
I can't imagine any other cable could be noticeably better. I just couldn't justify spending more on cables than I did for the console.

u/sgdude1337 · 1 pointr/ps2

Most lcd tvs don't support 240p over component or hdmi. PS1 games are mostly 240p. Your best bet is the pound hdmi cable, since it uses RGB output and then upscales to 720p, so your TV is being fed 720p, which it can correctly interpret.
https://www.amazon.com/POUND-Link-Cable-Playstation-compatible-2/dp/B07HPF7PRT/ref=sr_1_6?keywords=ps2+hdmi&qid=1572460939&sr=8-6
However, this isn't compatible with progressive scan, so I'd still play ps2 with the adapter you currently have in order to take advantage of 480p and get optimal image quality.

u/LoganPatchHowlett · 1 pointr/ps2

I second the comment on component cables. I changed over to them on my HDTV this year and it was like a revelation. Well not that big a difference but all the blurriness went away. They're pretty cheap too. I got one at a local shop. Like this: https://www.amazon.com/Component-V-Cable-Playstation-2/dp/B00005MDZD

u/CookieMunster73 · 2 pointsr/ps2

These are the ones I use. They are really reliable and high quality but it still stretches the screen. On some TV's you can set the aspect ratio. For HDMI it's the best I know of and they have it for different consoles as well. https://www.amazon.com/POUND-Link-Cable-Playstation-compatible-2/dp/B07HPF7PRT/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=pound+ps2&qid=1574439645&sr=8-1

u/559955 · 1 pointr/ps2

Ah okay. by converter do you mean something like this? I don't know if that's the best choice, it just the first thing when searching on amazon.

u/[deleted] · 1 pointr/ps2

I bought this SATA adapter from the eBay seller in the listing. It arrived faster than the scheduled delivery date. I went with this option because I wanted to keep the capabilities of the official Network Adapter. It's a pretty easy install even for beginners.

I wasn't sure how many games I would install alongside adding Free HDBoot, so I went with a 500GB hard drive given I heard of some issues with some 1TB brand IDE hard drives depending whether your system wants to play nice with it or not. I picked up the Seagate Barracuda ST500DM002 from Amazon. It connects and runs flawlessly. Maybe someone else can chime in about this adapter and working 1TB hard drives if you go that route.

I ended up going with the Vantec SATA/IDE to USB 3.0 Adapter, also found on Amazon. I was able to connect and format the hard drive and also install PS2 games with no problem.

I hope this information helps you.

u/mememuseum · 1 pointr/ps2

As u/amirzaim said, if you have a fat PS2, you can get a network adapter from Amazon or sometimes local used/retro gaming stores. You need an IDE HDD too (or you have to use adapters) I got mine here. Lastly, you need a cable to connect it to your PC and transfer game images IDE drive docks work but you can also use a cable like this one. Format with Winhiip and then install the ISOs. You can RIP ISOs off of your retail discs legally by using Imgburn on your PC. For all of this to work you need a freemcboot card, which a nice person in the sidebar sells.

The MadCatz Dual Force is my favourite PlayStation controller, but sadly it lacks the pressure-sensitive buttons of the DualShock 2 as it's designed for the original PlayStation. It's a lot more comfortable than the awkwardly cramped and sharp-edged Sony offerings, at least, thanks to its increased bulk and rubber grips. Apparently they released a sequel but I've not yet picked it up to give it a go.

https://www.amazon.com/VBESTLIFE-Interface-Network-Adaptor-Playstation/dp/B0778HN4KQ

Found that while searching and I would go with that over what I was saying. Don't need any adapters with this. Only downside is it doesn't have the networking port, but honestly that isn't really a downside these days.

This would be your cheapest solution to getting a harddrive working on your ps2. Just this and a harddrive.

u/DragoonClawNZ · 1 pointr/ps2

Outside of the official PS2 & PS3 cable, the best I can recommend for a new one is by HD Retrovision. Identical video quality to the official cables and solid build https://www.amazon.com/HD-Retrovision-PlayStation-Premium-Component/dp/B07H3F94ZN

u/Sirotaca · 2 pointsr/ps2

Yes, component is better than S-Video. S-Video is still decent, though. In either case, make sure to use high-quality cables, because that does matter for analog video.

I bought this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0778HN4KQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

a replacement HDD adapter for my ps2 upgrading it to SATA as the only IDE I had laying around was pretty small in size. it works for me perfectly and to make the deal even sweeter transferring the ISO from my discs to the HDD is done in something like 1/3 of the time as when I was using a bunch of converters to IDE, think that topped out at like 3MB/s or so, took like 10 mins to move a single 4gb game. I dont believe the network part works but I wasn't using that anyway. I just put my OEM adapter in a box in case I would ever need it down the road.

u/bobdamnit · 2 pointsr/ps2

Do you also need the power cable? I believe the PS3 power cable will work. So will any Vizio TV power cord, as well as a few assorted electric razor cords, boombox cords, and some older printer/scanners. (This only applies to the fat models!)

As for the video cables... We need to know a little more about your TV. Does it only do composite (3 plugins) or will it also do component (5 plugins)? If it will do component, I'd go with those. It's a much clearer picture on modern flat screen TV's.

So that model does support Component input through the VGA port, so you'll need an adapter if you wanna use it, and then the audio is plugged into the Side AV port. The TV would of come with a cable which plugs in there and provides three connectors, Yellow, Red and White.

You need a fat PS2, and network adapter to put a hard drive in your PS2. The official one only supports IDE drives, so you need either a third-party network adapter, or a network adapter mod kit if you want to use SATA hard drives.

PS2 game backups can be played off the hard drive with a program called OPL (Open PS2 Loader). See my comment in this thread for more information about using OPL with hard drives.

All this assumes of course that you're already running FreeMcboot. More info on that can be found here

I would definitely recommend this if it weren't so pricey nowadays.

This became my daily driver back in the day when I had my PS2 across the room from my bed and was scared to have it fall in the floor from pulling the controller too far back.

u/CaCtUs2003 · 2 pointsr/ps2

Don't buy cheap replacements because they break more easily and generally don't last as long.

I recommend getting an official replacement manufactured by Sony themselves, but if you're feeling venturous and are considering going off-brand, try the Logitech G-X2D11. (Not recommended for fighting games mainly because of the d-pad)

Yeah the problem is caused by the fact that my cable and most cheap cables on eBay/Amazon are not shielded. Just get this.

I bought this and couldn't be happier with it.

I used one for mine. This specifically should work with most HDTVs. I say most because I have no idea if a 4K TV for example has it.

I just did the research for this exact thing. When I'm back in the US in a few weeks, I'll be getting this:

These seem to have practically no delay.

You'll also need a video cable with RGB component output:

You can also get McBoot memory card and ethernet/hdd adapter so you can play your games off a hard drive. Edit: assuming you have a fat ps2. If you have a slim ps2, you can still use an external USB hard drive without the ethernet adapter iirc.
