I've been using this antenna (mounted in my attic) for about a month and it's been great. I wanted something that picks up VHF and UHF and live 35 miles SW of Chicago. I'm currently using a Sling Blue 7 day trial which I like except for that fact that you can't record anything (but most shows are available on demand). Yesterday I got an email from YouTube to try YouTube TV free for 30 days ($35 / month thereafter) and decide on Sling vs. YouTube TV in the next month.

I've tried a bunch of different flat antennas and my best luck has been with the [Mohu Leaf 50] (https://www.amazon.com/Mohu-Paper-thin-Reversible-Performance-MH-110599/dp/B00HSMK59E/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1503684207&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=mohu+leaf&psc=1). I live out in the burbs and can still pick up a good signal from all local networks.

Ouch, that's a tough spot.

There's another possibility that some of the folks in /r/Cordcutters have done. You can call a local DirecTV or Dish Network contractor/installer, and hire them to install a TV antenna on the condo roof for about $100. Just google for DirecTV installer, [city], [state].

Because satellite dish guys come around so frequently to condo complexes, management will just let them on up. Buy a TV antenna that doesn't look out of place in a farm of satellite dishes, like the Clearstream 2V(if you have VHF stations also, and they are transmitted somewhat close by) or a DB8e (if you have stations from two directions/cities).

Also, be sure to pick up a preamp so the signal doesn't degrade on the run to your condo.

The satellite installers have access to all the cabling panels, so they can bring the signal directly into your condo.

If you'd like more specific antenna advice for your situation, feel free to post your TVFool report here or in a PM or at /r/cordcutters.

use a channelmaster CM-4228HD mounted on a mast beside your house.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FVVKQM

for a mast use 3 chain link fence rails bolted together at the joints

https://www.lowes.com/pd/Galvanized-Steel-Chain-Link-Fence-Top-Rail/999989216

the antenna clamps to the top of the mast with the U bolts supplied with it and the mast itself in mounted to a base concreted into the ground

use a chain link fence terminal post as the base

https://www.lowes.com/pd/Common-2-3-8-in-x-2-3-8-in-x-6-ft-Actual-2-37-in-x-2-37-in-x-6-ft-Silver-Galvanized-Steel-Chain-Link-Fence-Terminal-Post/999990200

the terminal post is set into concrete inside a sono tube cut in half so it is 2 feet long

https://www.lowes.com/pd/Sakrete-Common-8-in-Actual-7-5-in-48-in-Concrete-Tube-Form/3037032

1 80 pound bag will fill 1 foot of 8" sono tube so you will need 2 bags total

https://www.lowes.com/pd/Sakrete-80-lb-High-Strength-Concrete-Mix/3099141

you will need a mounting bracket to hold the mast in place against wind

https://www.amazon.com/EZ-30-4W-Stand-Wall-Mount/dp/B010GFY2JS/

mount the bracket to the face of your roof directly over where you want the antenna mounted

use a post holer and make a hole 2 feet deep directly under the opening of the bracket attached to the eave of your house, sink the tube into the hole and fall with concrete

push the terminal post into the concrete and through it 1 more foot so that 3 feet is above ground while making sure it is aligned with the bracket and as vertical as possible.

allow the concrete 2 or 3 days to cure then assemble the antenna and mast in your yard being sure to bolt the sections together securely

attach your antenna to the top of the mast and zip tie your coax cable to the mast making 2 drip loops on the line one at the top and another at the bottom.

stand the mast upright and put it into the base.

go to https://www.tvfool.com/index.php?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=29

and put in your address it will show you compass directions and distances to broadcasting towers your AGL is 30 feet.

turn the antenna face so its pointing in the direction of the largest grouping of channels.

of you have channels in multiple directions you can mark the mast with a line and mark the base mount with lines directing you towards station groups then turn the mast as needed to bring in different stations.

I was looking at the 500 on Amazon and every review said ads popping up all the time. Are you saying you never see ads on the 350 and the quality and user interface is good enough that you can see and control a clear picture? check the reviews for yourself

I have found the Roku to be the most reliable set top box and the easiest for my parents to navigate. I have a large outdoor antenna mounted on the house that is connected to an HDHomeRun. That gives locals in one app and everything else in SlingTV. My parents have been able to navigate 2 apps with one remote well. I got them a Sideclick and they can run their entire setup from the Roku remote.

How exactly did you accomplish this? Exactly where?

NVM

  1. Go here on your computer. https://www.amazon.com/Sling-TV-LLC-Television-Carte/dp/B00ODC5N80/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1497474163&sr=8-1&keywords=sling+tv
  2. Sign into Amazon account.
  3. Add to cart.
  4. Send to device. (Assuming you are signed into your Amazon account on your device) you should be able to pick which device you want it sent to.
  5. Settings on Amazon fire -> account-> sync Amazon content.
  6. Wait a minute. Sling will disappear from managed applications. Launch sling from main menu.

this one: https://www.amazon.com/1byone-Amplified-Antenna-Supply-Coaxial/dp/B00RFLGH5E (it was a while ago, so probably something like it)

I can pick up channels ~20-25 mi outside of a major metro area. I brought it down to the beach and with the right positioning I was picking up channels 50+ mi away. father in law got a roof mounted antenna (not sure which one) which picked up even more channels.

so even at 50-60 I think you've still got a chance...the only thing that would be an issue is the broadcast power of your local stations. if they're really low, you might be out of luck :\

u/aspexin · 1 pointr/slingtv

We use this Roku model which is standalone for the past 3 years with Sling TV and zero issues. We also have the black AirTV box and the devices all sit on a laptop cooling fan pad.

u/JustAnother-Observer · 1 pointr/slingtv

Check Amazon, they have an adapter for old sets that accepts HDMI feed. Oops, they have a Roku one for less money
https://www.amazon.com/Composite-Converter-Streaming-Stick-models/dp/B00Z827E86/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1497221428&sr=8-2&keywords=fire+tv+adapter+for+old+tv

There are other boxes, but don't specify that they work for streaming devices....you know how finicky some can be.

u/thin_king980 · 1 pointr/slingtv

I look here https://www.amazon.com/Sling-TV-LLC-Television-Carte/dp/B00ODC5N80/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1497474163&sr=8-1&keywords=sling+tv

It shows it is updated a little bit down the page and I send it to my device of choice.

There are probably other ways in the AFTV like checking notifications but this is how I do it.

I have this receiver in my living room: https://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-RX-V385-5-1-Channel-Receiver-Bluetooth/dp/B07BNXXJKB/ref=sr_1_10?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1542239602&sr=1-10&keywords=audio+receiver

If you have a tv without a sound system, go to your sound settings - expert settings - auto volume. Turn it on. Most newer tvs , especially samsungs, have this option.

An official Android TV box or the Chinese knock off can run Sling, Kodi and hook up USB devices.

Mi Boxes I believe are officially licensed.

I have a Chinese one similar to this one -
