Ah! Nothing like a nice bit of science.

How about this science - that indicates that slicing off the labia lips of infant girls can reduce HIV/AIDs by up to 60%? And who knows what other amazing "health" benefits could be discovered as soon as we get chopping!

And guess what? "Science" has shown that often, women with mutilated genitals are perfectly happy and have great sex lives!

All fancy "peer reviewed" journals, top Universities and research establishments etc.

Note: I am against ALL genital mutilation of females, males and intersex. Please don't interpret this post as supporting any of these activities.

Everything I have posted below is factual; but it's supposed to be ironic and educational - to help folks clear up their confused thinking around this issue. Thanks

Genital Autonomy for all - Intersex, Male & Female

If the amputation of the mucus membranes of the male genitals results in a lowering of HIV infection; then it would not be unreasonable to assume that the amputation of the mucus membranes of the female genitals would produce the same effect. Indeed, as the total surface area of mucus membranes in females is so much greater than that of males, the effect may be even greater.

However, most western peoples will be repulsed by the idea of amputating parts of an infant female's genitals to obtain some future protection from a disease. All the more so, when nearly 100% protection can be obtain from HIV infection by use of condoms.

But this repulsion does not arise when the prospect of amputating parts of infant male genitals. This is clearly because such activity has become "normalised" in the west. This is the issue.

Like male circumcision, there are plenty of peer reviewed studies that show female circumcision is not a barrier to sexual orgasm and enjoyment. Some studies show that orgasm and enjoyment are reduced; and some show no effect.

You'll often come across members of the medical community saying that FGM has no "health" benefits, and if women have their clitoris amputated, then their sex life comes to an end. Then they say that MGM has lots of "health" benefits and that men's sex life is not affected.

But it's a myth that many women who have suffered FGM are unhappy and cannot have great sex lives. That's why they queue up to have their daughters' circumcised. Plus there are many so-called potential "health benefits" - such as a 50% reduction in HIV/AIDS.

The visible part - the glans clitoris - is only a small part of the whole clitoris. So when a woman suffers partial or total amputation of the external clitoris when undergoing FGM, only a small part of her clitoris is removed. Thus she often can enjoy a full and satisfying sex life.

The truth about the female clitoris

Learn how large the female clitoris is; and how the external glans clitoris is just a small part of it:

Female Circumcision & Health Benefits

"Stallings et al. (2005) reported that, in Tanzanian women,
the risk of HIV among women who had undergone FGC
was roughly half that of women who had not; the association
remained significant after adjusting for region, household
wealth, age, lifetime partners, union status, and recent ulcer."

Note: when it's found that circumcising female genitals reduces HIV/AIDS it's called a "conundrum" rather that a wonderfully exciting "medical" opportunity to reduces HIV/AIDS.

The Association between Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and the Risk of HIV/AIDS in Kenyan Girls and Women (15-49 Years):

"RESULTS: This study shows an inverse association (OR=0.508; 95% CI: 0.376-0.687) between FGM and HIV/AIDS, after adjusting for confounding variables."

"DISCUSSION: The inverse association between FGM and HIV/AIDS established in this study suggests a possible protective effect of female circumcision against HIV/AIDS. This finding suggests therefore the need to authenticate this inverse association in different populations and also to determine the mechanisms for the observed association."

"This study investigated whether there is a direct association between FGM and HIV/AIDS. Surprisingly, the results indicated that the practice of FGM turned out to reduce the risk of HIV. While a positive association was hypothesized, a surprising inverse association between cases of female circumcision and positive HIV serostatus was obtained, hence indicating that FGM may have protective properties against the transmission of HIV."

If you want great quality headphones for the value, these are currently trending as a great value that can challenge studio equipment:

Superlux-HD661
http://www.amazon.com/Superlux-HD661-Closed-Back-Professional-Detachable/dp/B0062OOFAY

Disclaimer I have not listened to these. They are currently trending, but they are reviewed positively by someone I trust. Here is the picture my friend took; it is better than the pictures shown on the amazon page.

EDIT#2: Here is an open-backed headphone from the same company (for those that want open-backed). Superlux 668b

EDIT#3: Oh you are asking for in-ears. I would say to wait for Ultimate Ears Triple-Fis, they can go for $99 during Black Friday sales. Other than those, the best value that is almost 80% quality of the big hitters are these guys made from monoprice (yes that online website for cheap cables, do make high quality products; these in-ears of theirs are famous): http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=108&cp_id=10823&cs_id=1082303&p_id=8320&seq=1&format=2
The monoprice full-size headphones are also as good value as the Superlux in terms of quality.

If this is you... "but it doesn't look cool like those other streamers have with their racing chairs and Yeti mics!" this info isn't for you.

But if you want good quality and an enjoyable experience I got you covered. I'm not talking about spending tons of money up front, but instead getting good gear from the start that will solve problems you didn't realize until you were stuck with them and setting you up to save money in the long run to upgrade to an even better set up in the future.

I have spent a few thousand dollars on multiple set ups (AT2020 w/ Scarlet 2i2, Rode NT-USB, Shure SM7B w/ Cloud Lifter & Scarlet 2i2, Beyerdynamic MMX300 & What I use now Electro Voice RE320 w/ Art Voice Channel)

Here's my battlestation: http://imgs.fyi/img/7p6s.jpg

After spending hundreds of hours trouble shooting, sound proofing, gear swapping, re-watching vods etc. I have a passion for getting good gear and not just what "every one else has", it drives me nuts. So long post inc.

The problems with the Yeti...

- its massive, so it gets in your way/eye sight

- weights a lot, so boom arms have to be heavier duty and not as easy to move around

- no native pop filter, so you only have the small foam ones or the giant round ones with goose necks that take up even more room

- side directing mic (meaning you have to speak into the side and not the end) so you have to position it funny with its giant size

- Condenser style, so it is extremely sensitive, will pick up all background sounds, computer fans, keyboard etc (the other option is called a Dynamic Mic, which will pick up virtually no background noise)

- No future upgrade ability, want to add a good compressor, noise gate, eq, gain booster etc.. need all new gear. It sucks to spend money on something and then a year later want to upgrade and realize you wasted money.

So, a couple common mics that solve some of these problems are the

- Rode NT-USB, smaller profile, "built in" pop filter

- Audio-Technica AT2020, smaller profile, can get a small contoured pop filter

But both of these still have the problem of being condensers that pick up too much noise and no future upgrade paths.

If I was starting over from scratch I would start with a

- Audio Technica AT2005USB https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-AT2005USB-Cardioid-Dynamic-Microphone/dp/B007JX8O0Y/ref=sr_1_8?keywords=usb+xlr+mic&qid=1554823050&s=gateway&sr=8-8

Can use USB into PC and nothing else required to start. End address so it doesn't get in the way, small and light, lots of good foam popfilters out there for mic shapes, and most importantly it's a DYNAMIC mic. So you wont have to spend hours and hours with noise proofing, buying keyboard dampners to silence it, hanging blankets on the walls to block out noise, telling your family/neighbors to be quiet because your condenser mic picked up the noise ETC

Then when you want to add more gear to really get top tier sound you can use the mics XLR connection because it has both!

Okay that was enough, but just in case you're interested, heres a list of my gear that I am 100% happy with and never expect to change (audio gear lasts decades)

- Electro Voice RE320 /w accompanying foam pop filter & small generic shock mount

- Art Voice Channel, has a all the features you'd ever need all in one. Gain, Impedence, Compressor, Expander/gate, Noise Gate, EQ, USB interface

- ProBoom ultima

There are lots of good ways to prep it, but in my opinion the best is:

Get an injection kit: (https://www.amazon.com/Tony-Chachere-Injectable-Marinades-Injector/dp/B00YZNZYZY

(Or just use melted butter, garlic and cajun spices) Inject the hell out of every inch of meat before cooking.

Dry the bird really well like in the video, then take some additional dry spices. I like to mix Tony's, garlic salt, thyme, sage, etc. and shove it all *under* the skin of the bird in as many places as you can stretch the skin. Try to get it between the skin and the meat. It takes some practice, but it's SO worth it.

Dust the rest of the dry spice around the outside of the bird.

Cook like the video shows you.

Condiments aren't necessary, but I *LOVE* a dark roux gravy with a fried turkey. There are a lot of great recipes for dark roux-based turkey gravy, but I like to make it like gumbo:

  • Make a dark roux (this can be a science, but there's nothing wrong with buying premade roux).
  • Add chopped celery, onions and bellpeppers (the holy trinity). Cook until translucent.
  • Add turkey stock, red wine, mushroom, spices, etc. Simmer for a good long time.
  • Strain it if your kids/wife are a bunch of pansies like mine.
  • Drink it by the goddamn glass with your turkey.

Credit for the awesome fake glove idea goes to the guy who posted the severed hand costume a year ago, not sure who, I saw the repost from a few days ago. His costume was a guy holding his own severed hand, and the top comment was “YOU HAVE TWO RIGHT HANDS!” People were discussing how to solve that when I thought of this costume idea. You’re not holding your own hand, but a zombie hand. It just seemed like too cool of a project not to build, so I went ahead and tackled it right away. Here’s that original post-

Best $20 I’ve spent for a Halloween costume...

Also please ignore the bad cigar etiquette. It’s not a real cigar so I kinda puffed too hard at it. It’s just there to sell that it’s not my hand when it is burnt. It’s also in there to add some ambient smoke, and Evil Dead ostentatious style.

Here is a little written guide on how you can tackle this yourself at home. Let me know if you have any questions.

Here’s what you will need-

•1 Black/red spandex glove
•~1 Pint Liquid mask latex
•2” thick styrofoam sheet, you only need about 4”x14”, plus a knife/rasp for carving.
•Acrylic paint- Black, Red, Brown, Green, yellow, fleshtone
•tin foil
•vinyl gloves
•rice/beans/airsoft BBs to fill glove for painting.
•sand for texture
•tissues
•Spray paint- black, brown
•gloves for fake hand
•jacket

First, take the long spandex glove and cut a 2”x1” hole in the wrist just below the palm that your real hand slips into. If you mess up, just turn the other glove inside out and use that one. Then carve the zombie forearm out of foam, keeping it really skinny and emphasizing the muscle shape. Then it goes into the back of the spandex glove up to where it touches your real wrist, with pins stuck into the foam to keep it in place and shape the fabric. Wrinkles are good here, you want a loose skin/vein look. Fill a vinyl glove with some rice/beans/air soft bbs and stuff that into the hand part of the glove temporarily while you paint it. Then use a liberal amount of liquid latex to paint it. Make sure you wear paint clothes or an apron when working with Latex. It’s messy stuff and will ruin your clothes/carpet. Put some tin foil down on your counter, and while painting the arm itself, mix latex into some tissues laid flat on the foil for skin muscle/skin texture pieces to add after they dried. You can mix normal acrylic/tempra paint into liquid latex to make different colors. Keep in mind it usually dries a lot darker than when it is wet, so don’t make the colors too dark. Start by painting the arm entirely black, then layer on red, green, and rotten flesh colored latex. Rub up and layer the tissue and latex pieces between colors to add texture to each layer. Sprinkle some sand on the wet latex to give it a really gnarly gross texture. Then carve a foam radius and ulna bone and stick them on the back with toothpicks and coat them with white glue to strengthen them/glue them to the arm. Layer more red latex on top to make them look like they go up into the arm. Then glue a dangly bit of latex as a snapped tendon. For detailing, flick some dark red acrylic paint on with an old toothbrush for some blood splatter in logical spots like the severed part of the arm and palm. Use a glossy latex-based spray for the exposed flesh parts to break up the flat texture latex usually has. You could also buy a bottle of GO2 brand glue and paint that on, it dries clear, glossy, and flexible in 20 mins. Optionally, cut a template for the tire tread mark and tape it around the zombie wrist in a logical spot, and just mist some black primer on top of that. Finally, mist some brown/black spray paint on to make it look dirty/burnt. Go light on it at first, you can always add more, it’s harder to subtract. Once everything is dry, untie/unclamp the vinyl glove filled with rice/beans/bbs and let those drain out through the hole in the wrist. This makes the glove shrink and wrinkle and also makes the vinyl glove easy to peel out of there.

Also optional, but you can add a $7 gold wrist watch from Walmart that you can grime/bloody up with latex (which should clean off fairly easily as long as it doesn’t soak in) Have that resting further down the zombie forearm.

Then the fake hand/glove around the wrist is just stuffed with some tin foil that you shape like the bone structure of your hand. Tin foil is good because you can bend and shape it. Then you shape the tin foil in the back of the hand so that it blends into your wrist. You can use two Velcro cable ties to keep it on your wrist, and put a safety pin through the Velcro, glove, and tin foil to keep them all together. Or you could just use a shoelace and tie it on. Make sure you put your jacket on BEFORE you put the zombie arm glove on. Then throw together a gross walking dead/ apocalypse look at a thrift store, add some cheap air soft guns and your melee weapon of choice, and you are done!

Here is a few pictures to give you a better look-

Thank you for your response.

> so we can ask how has faith in superior divine entities recently helped us in curing bone cancer

Well, the answer is a lot. We can just look at one example, St. Jude's Hospital which was started by Danny Thomas, a Maronite Catholic. I'll quote the rest from Wikipedia here... " When his first child was about to be born, he attended Mass in Detroit and put his last $7.00 in the offering bin. He prayed to St. Jude Thaddeus for a means to provide for his family, and about a week later, he obtained a gig that paid 10 times what he had put in the offering bin. After that time, Thomas believed in the power of prayer. He promised St. Jude Thaddeus that if the saint made him successful, he would one day build him a shrine. Years later, Thomas became an extremely successful comedian and built St. Jude Children's Research Hospital as a shrine to St. Jude Thaddeus to honor his promise." The institute, founded by a Christian because of Christianity has produced over 4,000 scholarly articles related specifically to Osteosarcoma.

Unfortunately, the anecdotes of Galileo and and a few others have shrouded the reality that "the ongoing clash of creationism with evolution obscures the fact that Christianity has actually had a far more positive role to play in the history of science than commonly believed." nature.com

  • Until the French Revolution, the Catholic Church was the leading sponsor of scientific research. Starting in the Middle Ages, it paid for priests, monks and friars to study at the universities. The church even insisted that science and mathematics should be a compulsory part of the syllabus.

  • By the seventeenth century, the Jesuit order had become the leading scientific organisation in Europe, publishing thousands of papers and spreading new discoveries around the world.

  • It was faith that led Copernicus to reject the ugly Ptolemaic universe; that drove Johannes Kepler to discover the constitution of the solar system; and that convinced James Clerk Maxwell he could reduce electromagnetism to a set of equations so elegant they take the breathe away

These days, the real discord between faith and science are just wedge issues - evolution and fetal stem cell research. Christians don't stand in the way of science in general, they oppose certain studies that they consider to be profoundly immoral (belief that embryos deserve human rights) or false (some forms of neo-darwinian synthesis). Given the small fraction of the sciences that this actually represents, it hardly makes the case that there is a deep divide between the two, or that Christianity is holding back science.

If you are interested, I highly recommend you take a look at a few books...

    > Where the Conflict Really Lies: Science, Religion and Naturalism by Dr. Alvin Plantinga formerly of Notre Dame

    > Mind & Cosmos: Why the Materialist Neo-Darwinian Conception of Nature is Almost Certainly False by renowned atheist philosopher Dr. Thomas Nagel

    > The Genesis of Science by Dr. James Hannam

There are plenty more, of course. But it leads to a striking question - who are more mislead, the Christians who are taught that evolution is false, or the Western world that is taught that the Church is an enemy of science?

Often times mycology societies have events for mushroom picking as well as classes you can take. Ther are also more general foraging classes that happen in your local nature area. If you would like a wonderful book to get you excited and knowledgeable try https://www.amazon.com/All-That-Rain-Promises-More/dp/0898153883 it's a wonderful full colored pocket book with great encyclopedic knowledge for many species. Often times, if you're in the US, you might have to get a permit to pick, so that you don't destroy the ecology by over picking and such.

They're selling this shit for 90$?!

They're selling this shit for 60$? (Realized it was probably 90AUD, 60$ is still gouging, but maybe not as egregious. The kit I link below is 30$ with free 2 day shipping, includes way more of the actually expensive stuff (non-passive components) to play with and is still all around a much better intro to Arduino)

I love he's saying "that's not how open source works" after throwing an Arduino clone and some Fritzing diagrams that are almost the exact same guides Arduino.cc has:

https://www.arduino.cc/en/Tutorial/BlinkWithoutDelay

I get the value add of putting all the parts in one box for people trying to get a start, but lmao not 60$ value.

The guide book is the kind of thing you'd find as a long instructable, or maybe a 5$ eBook.

The parts are worth like 20$, and that's if you don't buy it in bulk.

Usually people complain about margins that require buying by the truckload, but you could literally hop on Aliexpress and buy 10x the parts in the kit for 20$. Maybe 30$ if you're feeling impatient and want to use Amazon.

FFS Look at what 30$ buys you, all in one box if you're intimidated by buying individual parts!

And an Amazon.au listings:

I felt for this guy until I saw that price tag and the parts list, the guy gouging people who don't know better got outplayed, no one here is some champion of open source.

There’s a book that’s free if you have amazon prime named “Johnny Carson” by Henry Bushkin ( https://www.amazon.com/Johnny-Carson-Henry-Bushkin-ebook/dp/B00CICPU4O) who was his lawyer and close friend around the time of this clip. Well, they're not Mongolian, but everyone who even remotely enjoys this should definitely check out Yat-Kha, a band from Tuva. They did a whole cover album of mostly rock songs. I actually got to see them live several years ago and it was amazing.

My absolute favorite cover is Led Zeppelin's When the Levee Breaks (sadly couldn't find it online). My second and third favorite covers are Santana's Black Magic Woman and Motörhead's Orgasmatron.

Hmm. Now I'm trying to think of all the animals shown to have a decently high order of intelligence. There's the Hominids (Humans, Chimps, Orangutans, Gorillas) that have high level social intelligence, self awareness (mirror dot test) and problem solving/tool use. Chimps have incredible visual memory Cephalopods (Octopi & Cuttlefish) have shown tool use, incredible spacial awareness, and extremely complex brains for invertebrates. Some birds, especially some species of Corvids and parrots have demonstrated tool use, problem solving, strong memory, and language (African Gray Parrots notably excel at language).

There's also a scattering of various other mammals that demonstrate intelligence, including dolphins, killer whales, elephants, pigs, and many breeds of dog. I don't know, intelligence is a weird thing. I'm not entirely sure we as humans are actually entirely intelligent enough to fully know the alien forms of intelligence other species are capable of.

Neil Postman could answer this one. Despite his book [Amusing Ourselves to Death: Public Discourse in the Age of Show Business] (https://www.amazon.com/Amusing-Ourselves-Death-Discourse-Business/dp/014303653X) being written in 1985, it's pretty much 100% on point with the direction main stream media has gone over the last few decades.

Essentially television is one of the worst mediums to deliver important information due to it's reliance on imagery and entertainment. It's easier to become distracted as flashy, interesting, images will trump the any verbal/written content. This isn't always true, and when done properly it can still handle serious topics... however, the majority of the people enjoy the headlines and breaking news. Long form discussion is just too boring for modern television, and that's not to say people don't want it, but they're by far in the minority. Additionally, all the visual cues will subtly influence your opinion. Attractiveness and confidence heavily influence credibility.

Podcasts are actually a decent medium for this type of thing, because it removes the reliance on imagery from television. The listener has to actively listen in order to follow the discussion and extract useful information. Written text goes a step further in that it presents the content in a slower pacing and it strips the entire discussion down so it can be judged purely on content.

It really makes good coffee. My parents had a classic Danish Bodum Santos since the Eighties, and I have had one for fifteen years now or so.

Making coffee with it really doesn't have to be as … elaborate as shown in the video. Due to its design, the water seems to hit the coffee at a very good temperature and it produces a very nice and mellow flavor. Just make sure you have a rather rough grind, and the rest is almost fire and forget.

Hijacking top comment: If you don't carry a pocket knife, (or even if you do), you should get one of these and keep it on your keychain. You could save your life or someone else's.

> neither of those situations should have led to an overturned car.

Yes, but sadly it happens. I know of a family who's son was driving (with a Maryland permit, which I elaborate on below) and overcompensated for a merging truck.

> Seriously, we need better, mandated driver training and testing in the US.

I could not agree more! I was lucky to have started driving in a family that takes driving very seriously. I can't imagine where i'd be without them.

I think a road kit should be legally mandatory. One that includes a reflective triangle, tire iron, first aid kit, and one of these.

I believe Finland has the strictest criteria for receiving a license. In Maryland, the requirements for a permit is nothing but a 20 question test, and that an adult (21+) is in the passenger seat.

How the hell...

No, not really. Amusing Ourselves to Death by Neil Postman. I just read a chapter this morning where he argues that political discourse has significantly changed in our culture, so that how a candidate "plays" on screen is the criteria for selection.

He believes that TV, at it's core, is a machine for entertainment and not information transfer. In his view, the sitcom is not problematic since it is unashamedly entertainment. It is the news shows (or "serious" TV) which should trouble us, since it disguises itself as informative but ultimately is for entertainment just as much as a sitcom.

I only watched parts... But don't see how this is all that different from a method that has been used for decades: Bodum Pebo Vacuum Coffee Maker, 8 cup, 1.0 l, 34 oz., Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00005NCX5/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_f4ksxbTJW4P34

Russian dashcams are why I bought one. Hopefully we can spread awareness so we start seeing more pop up.

This is the one I got. Note that this is the capacitor version. The normal one has a battery. I got this one because it gets really hot here and that would damage the battery. Battery version is slightly cheaper. Overall good for the price. It's the one that I see recommended most.

The problem with Crossfire, and all other news shows, is that they pretend to be serious and thoughtful, when in reality they are just partisan hackery for entertainment purposes. At least when you are watching Duck Dynasty, you don't think of it as being of any importance, it is just there for amusement; a show like Crossfire comes with the expectation of honest debate.

Instead of informing you to make you a better citizen, you get non-functional information. Instead of knowing the differences in policy that two candidates have, or what are the causes and consequences of certain events in the world, you become more focused on a politician's personality and sensationalized information. When things like this become "newsworthy", our democratic processes suffer because the news media is the nervous system of a democracy. It's even worse on shows like Crossfire, because the emphasis is on winning, not on etching out a clearer picture of the truth. So instead of asking a politician to explain a claim they made about a substantive policy issue, you get things like swiftboating. We get hung up on the battle between right and left that we forget about discerning right from wrong. And then people who watch things like CNN and Fox News and MSNBC pat themselves on the back, thinking they are doing something to aid in their civic duty, instead of wasting their time with that tripe on reality TV. But cable news is worse than those reality TV shows, because it has the same function (I like to see my guy beat up on the other guy) but the pretension of being important and thoughtful. So who is worse off? The fool or the fool who doesn't know he is a fool?
