A good local fish store, a place that specializes in aquariums, is a great ally to have. Related are local small pet stores (no dogs and cats) and local pet stores. The more specialized you go, generally the better you get. There are bad ones - the LSPS and LPS that are very accessible to me are awful. Sick fish in dirty water, dead fish drying up on the floor :'(

I mostly go to Petco because the good LFS is a one hour train ride for me. Mine is well managed: the fish are healthy, the plants are nice, and the department manager has a lot of experience. A chain store may be your best option, and if the fish seem healthy (the water is clean, minimal fin damage, no visible diseases) then go for it. Not all Petco are created the same.

Live plants: You can buy online (/r/aquaswap and /r/PlantedTank are two subreddits for this) or buy in-store. LFSs often have live plants. Petco sometimes has plants - buy the ones in the tanks, not the ones in the tubes. Petsmart only has tube plants, which have to go through an adaptation period after being submerged, and they may not survive that period. Awfully expensive on top of that! You can do a snail dip to clean up your plants before placing them in your tank.

As for tanks... whatever makes you happy. Betta prefer horizontal space to vertical space, but this seems to be a very popular tank on /r/bettafish. Buying tanks online can be a crapshoot; make sure that the price is competitive because often they'll jack it up to make up shipping costs for a large, heavy, fragile item. I suggest you look in person. I've been happy with this one but I would recommend going 5 or even 10 gallons if it's your first swing after you've been out for a while.

They have a betta care sheet at /r/bettafish, and if you search "tank recommendations" you'll turn up a whole slew of what's worked well for others :)

Good luck!

I used to think in the same way that you're suggesting. That's why I was agnostic for awhile. However, I started thinking that if you're going to see God as just energy or some mystic force, then thats what it is: energy. Based on history, historical texts, and different fields of science, I don't think humans have ever encountered God, probably just got really high and experimented with drugs when it comes down to it. As long as you look to a higher power to send love to all corners of your life and the universe, then go right ahead. I recently just read The Four Agreements, by Dan Miguel Ruiz, and he describes "The Creator" basically as the source of all love, and that love emanates through all things living or not. Everyone interested should read! I'm pretty sure I found out about it through this sub too! Very wholesome and dank.

The US is lots of different governments and voting styles layered atop one another. We directly elect our representatives but not our President. However, at the state level, we do typically elect our representatives and our governor. We directly elect our city councillors and our mayors, but not always by plurality voting, because the local level is more open to experimentation and less bound by the constitution. In some places, we elect our judges, and in others they're appointed, and in others they're selected by a legislature. We also have a large number of unelected officials with real power, usually employees of the executive, sometimes under the scrutiny of people we do elect and sometimes not. The systems used for direct power projection (private security, the police, and the military) are typically some combination of "regular employer" and "elected officials". And that doesn't even get into other types of private businesses who are contracted to do work for one or more different layers of government.

When you talk about government being good for the people, you need to specify which branch and which level. My town board does a great job, I think. My garbage is picked up from the roadside, the roads and parks are kept clean and in good repair, the area is generally well-lit and safe, and the schools are successful.

In other words, it's complicated.

Edit: Also, Reinhold Niebuhr's most influential book is Moral Man and Immoral Society, where he discusses how working within established systems and bureaucracy can subvert the actions of an entire government full of well-meaning people. This is what MLKJr cited in Letter from a Birmingham Jail when appealing to the white moderates who didn't support segregation but also didn't oppose it. We are often more immoral as a group than as individuals.

If you are looking to start calligraphy I would highly recommend just taking the plunge and purchasing some cheap calligraphy pens. They aren't super expensive and while you can just do faux-calligraphy with a ball point pen I have found that there is something about having a dedicated pen that makes me so much more motivated. If you are interested in Gothic calligraphy I personally love the Pilot Parallel pens for their ease of use and portability. Good luck on finding something artsy to do!

I have this problem too and there’s a few things that might help!

  • Mouth guards from the dentist will only help at night time and personally I find that sports ones are cheaper, thinner, easier to replace, and actually hurt my jaw less. This one is my personal favourite and is the easiest to re-do if you mess it up.

  • Mindfullness apps sometimes have timers and reminders to reduce your stress! Google Assistant can send you custom push notifications to relax.

Addressing underlying issues and work/life balance were big ones for me. Consciously telling my jaw to relax was super helpful and the night mouth guard helped the most because I didn’t wake up tense. Best of luck friend!

Here’s a couple of books that will give you strategies to be a more effective educator, especially with low-income students. Realistically the strategies are great for any kid, as all kids can use some support and empathy from the adults in the lives.

“Reading and Reaching Children Who Hurt” by Susan E. Craig - How to more effectively teach children who have experienced trauma (Adverse Childhood Experiences). His experience is the goal of the strategies given in the book. (Amazon) I haven’t read it, but she also has two more recent books, “Trauma Sensitive Schools” K-5 and 6-12

Trauma Sensitive Schools: Approaches that Work - A project by the Massachusetts Advocates for Children and Harvard Law School has free books (downloadable pdf). One focused on the background and the second is about implementing a school-wide approach.

“Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria” by Dr. Beverly Tatum - Covers the theory of racial identity development and how to support positive racial identity in an educational setting. (Amazon)

Hi OP! I'm really glad you're talking and learning about your experience. I don't know if it'll be useful to you at all, but this book is fantastic and goes over a lot of new science regarding and surrounding sex - but it also addresses the idea of context and arousal. If you are asexual, that's totes cool! If you are close but not quite, it may be that your context includes how you feel about the relationship and other things, and that you haven't found the right combination (yet!). Emily is a brilliant author and explains it a lot better and more in depth, though.

I had one and it was great! Got it as a joke, but it quickly became a legitimate thing I used a lot. It makes getting a sip of water after brushing your teeth easy, totally recommended.

Here it is on amazon.

And if you're looking for a fancier one, I recently replaced my whale with this;

https://www.amazon.com/Kwik-Brass-Faucet-Attachment-Fountain/dp/B00CH4TYXQ/

The cool thing about that is that it works like a normal faucet normally, but you pull the little thing on the side out to swap it to a fountain. And after you turn off the water, the button automatically goes back in so you don't spray yourself in the face tomorrow, haha

For anyone who loves the idea of a tiny dragon guarding his precious treasure I recommend A Book Dragon in which said treasure is a beautiful, priceless old book. One of my favorite YA stories.

To start up, you'll need a few basic things. The Bob Ross Master Piece Set has the majority of what you need (paint, knife, brushes), then you'll want a big plexiglass palette for mixing the paints. Finally, you'll need an easel to hold a canvas. I can personally recommend this one from Blick if you have one near you. Hope that helps, if you get into it, be sure to sub to r/HappyTrees to share your work!

Amazon, ebay, even retail stores like gamestop sometimes have these. Search "figure-rise" if you're looking for more model kits like this.

here's an amazon link: https://www.amazon.com/Bandai-Hobby-Figure-Rise-Standard-Building/dp/B01FDBHK7Q/

You can build these without any hobby tools or glue, though they often come with little stickers that need to be applied carefully.

Enjoy!

I donno if this us the book but "Enlightenment Now" by Steven Pinker goes into why things aren't as bad as they seem. In tons of ways its the best its ever been and that trend continues.

There are a ton of interesting art materials (I know, my wife buys them all).

If she likes pencil, maybe watercolor pencil would be interesting. You can draw like with a normal color pencil but then you can wet it and move and blend the colors around the page.

https://www.amazon.com/Derwent-Colored-Pencils-WaterColour-32883/dp/B000F56QDA

You need to get some heavier water color paper to take the abuse but it can do some amazing things in the right hands (not mine).
