A figure 8 is a classic kind of table top fastener. It’s quite simply what it sounds like - a figure of eight in metal. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Steel-Figure-Table-Connector-Fastener/dp/B06XZ3N4ZG
You drill a depression into the wood with a diameter equal to one of the loops on the figure of eight. Make sure it’s flush with the top. Then you drill a hole and screw the fastener in.
They’re advantageous because they allow for a slight swivel, preventing the wood from shaking in humidity changes.
