One of the things I try to prep for is the first 10 minutes.

First, stay calm.

Have immediate access to lights: battery powered flashlights, headlamps, lanterns. The darkness is scary so emotionally it will be important, plus it will most likely carry you over until power is restored in most cases.

If not, it will help you see your way to getting to your generator going, light your stove, find your gear, whatever.

Get your emergency radio/ham up and see what you can gleen about the situation...how far flung the outage might be.

I think a lot of people have their prep's all packed away neat and tidy but at 0-dark-30 you don't want to be fumbling for your shit...you want to be in control and in command. This confidence will greatly bolster your survival mindset.

Boiling water for food and cleaning should be easy...camp stoves, hiking stoves or even simpler: a propane grill and a pot....these should be no brainers and readily available and used during good times so it will be easy with limited light.

I would never EVER burn ANY gas inside a house that isn't a pre-existing insert fireplace. Propane, k1 or any other kerosene heater is dangerous for many reasons and not worth the risks they pose, ever.

You could boil water and fill a bladder and warm the kids. https://www.amazon.com/10x7-RUBBER-WATER-BOTTLE-Colors/dp/B0013MTHUS? I don't have kids, so my advise is dubious, but always be safe which is why I'm not recommending a chemical body/hand warmer.

I'd also get the the older one involved early: give him/her a headlamp of their own and tasks to keep them calm and occupied.

The internet community has gotchu!! It's how I cheered myself through my insertion :) I also highly recommend a hot water bottle/bag to rest on your abdomen after the insertion, mine helped allll the cramps and twinges I felt later that day and night!
