Generally, I think it's pretty bad idea to wear traditional headphones.

That being said, I recently picked up some bone conducting headphones that are open air, so they don't block your ability to hear the world around you. If you're going to do it, this is a pretty good way to go.

Agreed completely, and I don't listen to music while riding, however a reasonable alternative would be bone conduction earphones at a lower volume. You can still maintain situational awareness, and listen to music.

I bought two pairs of these when they were on for $30 a piece. They're incredibly useful actually, I've listened with my ears submerged in the tub too.

A bluetooth speaker would be a bit obnoxious I think.

Bone conduction headphones should allow you to listen to your surroundings, like this

Don't want to get your hopes up but have you tried bone conductive earphones?

assuming it isnt your "cochlea" (whatever that is) that went plop.

Quick google shows this is how it works:https://www.audioboneheadphones.com/how-it-works/

Something like this?

Aftershokz are decent from what I've heard for bone conduction.
