They are all going to be horrible. I'm sorry but it's true. If you can live with that, Altec Lansing iML237USB ORBIT is reasonably loud and less awful than most.
There are also other versions of that speaker, like one that is battery-powered with a 1/8-inch stereo plug, the Altec Lansing iM227 Orbit MP3 Speaker, etc. When I had to live with a laptop on the kitchen table for a while, it made audio bearable, and my daughter uses one in her car to amplify her her MP3 player. Until I got a tiny battery-powered bluetooth receiver to plug my preferred larger speakers into, I also used one to amplify my iPad.
Sorry that's its taken so long. I have exams coming up :)
I use these: http://www.amazon.com/Veho-VSS-002W-BLK-Speaker-System-Transmitting/dp/B002JC78G6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1335727640&sr=8-1 . They run on battery but recharge via USB. Do not use these if you intend on using them while using Wi-Fi (and if you have a wireless mouse it's even worse). The signals interfere with each other.
TechRadar recommended this guy here: http://www.amazon.com/Altec-Lansing-iML237USB-Portable-USB-Powered/dp/B002NEG0VO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1335727891&sr=8-1 and Amazon seems to agree. Don't expect a tight high-end from these, but it will do well to amplify your music.
Altec lansing has a USB-powered speaker http://www.amazon.com/Altec-Lansing-iML237USB-Portable-USB-Powered/dp/tags-on-product/B002NEG0VO
and also a battery-powered one.
