I don't know if ipad can send out data out (i.e. connect external hd and be able to copy from sd direct to external hd). I have a nexus 7 and otg hub, that with a couple editing programs for editing minor pics for social media.

Where I stole the idea from, I need to get some smaller travel hd's but I have a small otg hub that works for me right now just to do edits for any picture I want to put on social media and browsing pictures after a photo walk while enjoying a coffee downtown.

this guy uses a similar set up but with a usb y cable, so i could still use what I have now since the usb coming from the nexus won't power my hd, I plan to use a mix of both set up myself.

edit: I haven't bought any of the raw editors available on android yet but I'm looking into photomate r2 http://www.photo-mate.com/
If he has a phone with a usb plug, he can get an adapter so he can read the sd card through that on his phone.
I use this one https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DKMUBXQ
For any phone that has a micro usb charger this hookup works well. On samsung phones you can only select one picture at a time and have to back out to the full set instead of swiping through, but it lets you look at your trail cam pictures in the stand. Great gadget for under $5

You should look into getting a sd to micro USB adapter if you need to upload images on the go often.
