This is exactly what's going on.

Army Painter primer, in my experience, dries considerably faster than GW primer - like there's retardant in GW's or something. As such, AP is much less forgiving. Seriously, 6-8" works best for Army Painter. I used Armory Black Spray primer before getting my airbrush because it was the best balance for me locally between price, dry time and quality. I was able to run 6-12" spray distance with it in ~75F weather, and the minis were dry in 30 mins or so, ready to start base coating.
