> The only conclusion I've came to is that with armypainter you need to spray closer up (I think the paint is drying mid air then clinging to the miniatures).
This is exactly what's going on.
Army Painter primer, in my experience, dries considerably faster than GW primer - like there's retardant in GW's or something. As such, AP is much less forgiving. Seriously, 6-8" works best for Army Painter. I used Armory Black Spray primer before getting my airbrush because it was the best balance for me locally between price, dry time and quality. I was able to run 6-12" spray distance with it in ~75F weather, and the minis were dry in 30 mins or so, ready to start base coating.
