Apple Macbook Pro

  • i5 CPU
  • 8gb RAM
  • 256gb SSD
  • $1500

    Asus Laptop

  • i5 CPU
  • 8gb RAM
  • 256gb SSD
  • $500

The screen on the Asus is not quite as nice as the one on the macbook but it doesn't account for the $1000 difference in price. You could find one with a nicer screen for a couple hundred more if you looked around.

This one is the same price as the macbook but has more ports, twice the RAM, twice the SSD space, a higher screen resolution, a much better CPU, and dedicated graphics.

    What is apple even doing?

u/ThisUsernameIs20ltrs · 5 pointsr/dragonage

I'd go for something with an Intel 4th-6th gen i3/i5 CPU, 8GB of RAM and a relatively roomy SSD (>250GB).

You don't really need a laptop with a dedicated GPU, intel integrated graphics post 4th gen is more than enough for running DA:O

Other than that maybe go for a large and nice screen?

Personally I'd maybe go for this one: https://amzn.com/B01CGGOUJM
Extremely good CPU (i5, 6th gen), Big SSD (256GB), 8GB of RAM and the display is 1080p.

This is a lot of computer for your money and it's definitely worth it. I did look at some of the cheaper ones, but seeing as you're also going to be using it for school and such, I'm thinking you're going to want to invest a teeny bit more. Trust me, I've worked with a lot of cheap laptops and the low price is almost never worth it. The cheaper ones are going to last a couple of years before they become outdated, but the one I suggested is going to last a lot longer (as long as you're careful with it).

If you got any opinions/wishes/questions just mention them and I'll do my best to help you ;-)

Since Steam In-Home streaming relies on the source computer to do all the processing, the actual laptop it's being streamed to doesn't have to be all that powerful. Your primary concern for a stream laptop is going to be your network card. With that in mind, I suggest this Asus
or this Acer.

The Acer has everything the Asus has, is within .2 lbs of weight (5 pounds for either) with the addition of a dedicated graphics card. I'm more inclined to suggest the Acer as a better overall deal, since for an extra $20 you get the capability to game reasonably well on the go. The Asus, however, does have a slightly larger battery (38wH vs ~31wH on the Acer) so I would estimate you're looking at about an hour difference in favor of the Asus. Say 4-5 hours for the Acer and 5-6 for the Asus under normal usage. Not a colossal difference, but it might affect your usage plans for it. As far as Steam streaming, both have dedicated Ethernet ports- which I would absolutely prioritize over relying on WiFi. Especially if you're playing a fast-paced game like Overwatch.

The ASUS F556UA-AS54 laptop would do a great job for you in music production and coding. It has a very nice 6th generation i5 processor, 8 GB RAM which is great , a 256 GB SSD which will provide some much needed speed. This laptop also has a nice audio support and very good build quality. The only drawback is that it doesnt have an optical drive which you could still work around with by getting an external disk drive.

Or you could go for the ASUS F555LA which does have an optical drive, has a great processor, nice memory etc, but doesn't have an SSD-- instead, it has a 1000 GB HDD.

u/construktz · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

You're looking for the Asus F556UA.

It gets good battery life, has great specs for the price, and really is one of the highest quality machines for its price range. It has a full HD 15.6" 1920x1080 display, an i5-6200U, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD for snappy response times, and great connectivity options.

It's basically made for exactly what you're looking for.

u/wine-inacan · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

this one! you don't need to though haha I can search for it :)

u/trainedtech88 · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

you father will love this really decent asus. it has a nice built quality, durable, and will run word-processing as well as streaming at lightning speeds. it has a powerful intel i5 cpu, an 8gb ram 256gb ssd storage space and terrific battery life.

u/garlikdog · 2 pointsr/computerscience

Well it really depends on your budget at that point. Surfacebook will be fine especially now with the bash subsystem in Windows. But honestly, you don't need anything that fancy. You can probably get just a regular laptop for a lot less.

Something like this is probably fine: https://www.amazon.com/F556UA-AS54-15-6-inch-Full-HD-Laptop-Windows/dp/B01CGGOUJM/ref=sr_1_4?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1478987971&sr=1-4&keywords=asus

u/The---Technician · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

This ASUS F556UA-AS54 would be a very good pick for you. It has a nice i7 processor, solid 8 GB RAM, and fast 256 GB ssd. This laptop will do a very good job in surfing the internet, word processing, typing, and of course with a nice 1080 p screen resolution, great for video streaming.

u/SaneBRZ · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I would suggest to take a look at the Asus F556UA-AS54 on Amazon:

  • 15.6 inch, 1920x1080p display
  • Intel i5-6200U + 8 GB of RAM
  • 256 GB SSD
  • Intel HD 520 graphics
  • Price: $747

Seems like it has everything you want, besides a dedicated GPU (I don't know if that would be a deal breaker for you).
u/LonerIM2 · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

Yes, that is a good option for her needs, however, it is a little expensive for the specs, I would suggest this ASUS F556UA-AS54 because it comes with Core i5, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD which should be enough for daily usage like that, and it is much cheaper option.

u/Orangematz · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

You aren't gaming, so I wouldn't bother with a dedicated graphics card.

What about this?

u/visionaiir · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

You can try the ASUS F556UA-AS54.
This laptop has a 15.6 screen, and all the connection ports that a professor should need (SD cards, VGA, HDMI, USBs). It also has exactly 3 USB ports, 2 being USB 3.0s. It also has an optical drive in a 15.0 x 10.0 x 1.0 inch (WxDxH) form factor. The 6th gen i5 and 256 SSD would make this laptop feel blazingly fast with less than 10 seconds boot up time, and would more than suffice for Microsoft office and statistical packages. Lastly, this laptop is around 5 pounds, and battery should last way past an hour.

You can find it on amazon for around $549:

u/whosdr · 2 pointsr/runescape

Getting something with an SSD really does improve load times dramatically (from 2-8 second map load-times, to half a second or so)

I'll see what I can find again..

Edit:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CGGOUJM/
Dual-core Skylake i5 laptop processor with Intel HD 520 graphics, 1080p monitor, 256GB hard-drive.

Might want to continue this on the RuneScape forums, Tech Support or NXT, so Dooogy0 can weigh-in - he'll know more on the performance levels of integrated graphics.

u/ChickenFriedFresh · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Just came across another one, and personally I think it looks better. It's the ASUS F556UA-AS54
It's very similar in specs, but I thought I'd include it.

u/Michiganders · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

I would recommend a 15.6 inch ASUS F55U for $530 if he would like a SSD, which is much faster than a typical hard drive. It has great value for it's price, and specs that are probably willing to handle anything he is going to use it for and more. Also comes with a full size DVD drive.

u/Flantastical · 1 pointr/laptops

Yes, there will be many options, but they will always be heavier and harder to carry around in a backpack, and typically have a shorter battery life. I think 13.3 inch is the sweet spot if you plan on bringing it in classes because you'll feel cramped in your seat trying to use a 15 inch laptop. If you're not going to use it in class and such, I think a 15 would be just fine.

When you get a larger laptop, the price goes down though, so you won't have to spend as much for an equally powerful machine. This [Asus F55](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CGGOUJM/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B01CGGOUJM&linkCode=as2&tag=recom01-20&linkId=499c737e7252d9ccc11974db787356a0
) for $530 would be great option. It's basically the same as the other ASUS but 2.3 inch bigger screen, 6 hour battery life (10 in the UX305), 2 pounds heavier, and $170 cheaper.

You can go even cheaper than with the HP 15 for $420 which is another great option if you think you could make do with 128 GB storage. Check your current usage on your laptop / desktop to see how much you use and if you're using under 100 GB this is a solid option. You could just make use of cloud storage (such as apple icloud, google drive, dropbox) to save your files and things.

u/Sine_Nobilitate · 1 pointr/gamedev

Does anybody have any recommendations for laptops under ~900 CAD? I make 2D games in Unity. I'm currently looking at the Acer Aspire E15 and the Asus F556UA. From what I've seen, the Asus is better if I won't need the graphics card of the acer. Will I.

Any advice on which one to get, or other laptops you use is greatly appreciated.

PS: I need an SSD(256gb) and a i5 or better processor

u/tamwow19 · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

I'm currently looking at the Asus F556UA-AS54 or this Asus laptop (even though it's slightly over budg)

u/delta_thr3e · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

How would you guys go about selling a laptop? Amazon? Craigslist? It's this guy here.

u/mondev · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Try this HP for $458.98 or for $30 extra you can bump the 128GB SSD to 256GB with this ASUS.

u/Man16 · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

I was looking at this but I cant get it as I'm in the UK and there might be issues with the US version: https://www.amazon.com/F556UA-AS54-15-6-inch-Full-HD-Laptop-Windows/dp/B01CGGOUJM/

I was wondering if using a reship service for this is worth it?

u/YouuCantSeeMe · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

damn looks great, only issue is i cant seem to find it here in Canada :(

https://www.amazon.ca/F556UA-AS54-15-6-inch-Full-HD-Laptop-Windows/dp/B01CGGOUJM

here in Canada. fml

u/BrianTheballoon · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Try to find something with an SSD, the difference it will make compared to a 5400rpm HDD will be worth it (Those drives are slow as hell). External storage is cheap nowadays as well, and with cloud solutions (google), a 256gb ssd can be a perfect compromise.

Both laptops you found are 1366768, and at 15.6 inches, some people really can't stand having a res that low (shitty pixel density).

I found this

Same CPU/ram as the second one you linked, same size, but with 1920
1080 res and a nice ssd for fast boot/snappy program opening. Roughly the same price range.

u/melancholyway · 1 pointr/Amd

i7 is definitely not worth $200 more than the i5. I have some other good options for you if she'd like a more thin/prettier looking laptop:

Asus with an aluminum body design and similar specs at $529

HP with similar specs at $459

Upside of the Acer is the discrete graphics but it's a low end graphic card so it won't help that much. Upside of the Asus is the build quality and looks. Downside of the HP is only 128 GB hard drive but it has a much lower price than the other two.

u/QuirkySpiceBush · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Is the build quality for Dell XPS and Thinkpads so much better than this Asus F556UA-AS54? I mean, it hits many of the same checkboxes:

  • 15" display
  • 8 GB RAM
  • 256 GB SSD
  • 1920x1080 display
  • Intel i5 6200U vs 6300U (maybe 10% performance difference here)
  • Intel HD Graphics 520

But it costs literally half the price of the models you listed.
u/Dazzei · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

I've gone and looked a bit more and stumbled upon this laptop. Do you know what the difference is between the one you linked (other than the screen size) and why it's considerably cheaper?

u/MiloWantsaPopsicle · 1 pointr/Overwatch

Just a quick question about hardware requirements for PC. I looked up what they are and found this:

Minimum Requirements
Operating System: Windows® 7 / Windows® 8 / Windows® 10 64-bit (latest Service Pack)
Processor: Intel® Core™ i3 or AMD Phenom™ X3 8650
Video: NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 460, ATI Radeon™ HD 4850, or Intel® HD Graphics 4400
Memory: 4 GB RAM

Is this the absolute bare minimum or can you play this game on a laptop? This is the laptop I just purchased if it helps: http://www.amazon.com/F556UA-AS54-15-6-inch-Full-HD-Laptop-Windows/dp/B01CGGOUJM?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00

Would I be able to play on this? The only thing I don't have is a dedicated graphics card, I think on my laptop it's just integrated. I can play league on high settings with 60 fps so I feel like it should be able to handle overwatch at least on lower settings, but I don't want to buy the game and have it not run or be unplayable. Thanks.

u/TacticalBastard · 1 pointr/laptops

https://www.amazon.com/F556UA-AS54-15-6-inch-Full-HD-Laptop-Windows/dp/B01CGGOUJM thats $529 on Amazon.

Or are you looking for something like the F556UA

u/Ewaninho · 1 pointr/laptops

I was wondering what the difference is between that laptop and this asus. I know the acer has a better graphics card but other than that is there any difference?

u/techneeeq · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Consider the ASUS F556UA-AS54 and Asus F555LA-US71. Both should support Linux.

u/SlothSquadron · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

What's the advantages of that Thinkpad compared to this ASUS laptop? http://www.amazon.com/F556UA-AS54-15-6-inch-Full-HD-Laptop-Windows/dp/B01CGGOUJM/ref=zg_bs_565108_18

The ASUS costs $20 more for a 1080p display compared to the 720p of the Thinkpad and it has a better cpu.

Is the keyboard quality especially bad on the ASUS compared to the Thinkpad?

u/sleepingfoxes · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Are you kidding me? First off, dont go on Amazon first. I'd suggest looking at the microsoft store for laptops. They are signature editions which means that they dont come with any bloatware. And also if youre a student you get an extra discount.

http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/pdp/ASUS-VivoBook-E403-Signature-Edition-Laptop/productID.608755200

vivobook on the microsoft store for $350. At that price point, thats a great freakin deal.

Now as you said you're going to be doing some regular tasks. If in the future you need the extra horsepower, then I would recommend the asus zenbook

http://www.amazon.com/F556UA-AS54-15-6-inch-Full-HD-Laptop-Windows/dp/B01CGGOUJM/ref=sr_1_11?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1463632791&sr=1-11&keywords=asus+zenbook

the zenbooks i5 cpu definitely takes it here. Id suggest if you have the money for it, go with the zenbook.

u/cathain_ceartas · 1 pointr/laptops

If they're not deadset on Windows, a Chromebook would be a good choice. The Toshiba Chromebook 2 has everything you want except touch screen. Browse /r/chromeos for some suggestions.

Otherwise, I've had good experience with ASUS and Lenovo laptops. This guy doesn't look too bad.

u/kronkifer · 1 pointr/buildapc

How much is this where you are?
