This Lenovo Y50 is the way to go if you want a decent sub-$1000 gaming laptop.

If you had more to throw at it, I would go for the ASUS GL551JM. It's a higher quality machine.

Personally I like the nvidia mobile series and since it is a gaming machine it will potentially get hot. At just about 6lbs it isn't too heavy for a gaming laptop. On sale currently.

Above you have the ASUS Republic of Gaming laptop with weighs in at just over 9lbs if you're willing to put up with that. Slightly better graphics card and more ram.

Both run Windows 8.1 if you're alright with that. As someone who plays league and some triple A titles I would probably buy the lighter one if I were carrying it around campus. The heavier asus is really a desktop replacement. Both laptops are 15.6 inches and do not unfortunately give the battery life in hours. Any other questions I'd be happy to do more research.

With the $50 saved on the first option, buying a carrying bag wouldn't break the bank. Best of luck to you.

There is a version of the GL551JM with a 1TB 7200RPM HDD that's under $1000.

About the Y70, I think it's a worse choice because of the additional bulkiness, and 17.3" TN screens are almost always poor quality too, which will detract from your gaming experience. Plus, at $1100 for similar specs, it's $100 more than the GL551JM for a heavier machine, which doesn't make much sense to me.

Love mine, blows a Y50 out of the water in probably every way, even though specs are similar.

u/SaneBRZ · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

For under 1000 bucks you could get a laptop with a GTX 860M:

  • Acer Aspire VN7 series
  • Asus ROG GL551JM
  • Lenovo Y50

All three models have more or less identical specs (1080p display, i7 quad core, Nvidia GTX 860M). They won't have any problems with WoW (on high settings) or Planetside 2.

If you can spend a little bit more, you could get a laptop with a GTX 965M, like the new Alienware 15:

  • 15.6 inch, 1920x1080p display
  • Intel i5-4210H + 8 GB of RAM
  • 1 TB HDD
  • Nvidia GTX 965M with 2 GB of GDDR5 RAM
  • Price: $1099 (a discount is applied at checkout)

Though it does have only an i5 dual core, but it's quite powerful. In most games it wouldn't make too much of a difference. The biggest advantage of the Alienware 15 would be the battery life. It has a massive 92 WHr battery. Almost double the capacity compared to the three laptops above.
u/Orangematz · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

Go for this since you need the most graphics power you will need. If the weight is too much you can go with this.

u/totalprocrastination · 2 pointsr/dragonage

$500 is not going to buy you a new gaming laptop that will be up to date for DA:I, even at low settings.

Generally speaking, Asus's Republic of Gamers line of laptops are solidly built gaming laptops sold at reasonable prices, but the cheapest model I can find on Amazon is the 15' ASUS ROG GL551JM-DH71 which is currently $1,089.99.

It comes with a GeForce GTX 860M which I believe will play DA:I at High settings at 720p resolution based on these benchmarks.

So I'd recommend discussing with your parents if they would be willing to front you more money and/or you save up your own to chip in, and/or look for some used ones on ebay.

u/ShyFilmsStudios · 2 pointsr/gopro

I'd look for something with 8-16 GB ram, an Intel Core i7 Processor and a good graphic card. Something like this. Its a little expensive, but the main issue is rendering with weak laptops. They are essentialy useless to do other things with whilst rendering. Of cource you have to decide youreself what you want to spend on it. Its just a suggestion.

u/yellowpotatobus · 1 pointr/buildapc

if you want a laptop -> buy a laptop. You can't really "custom build" those like a pc. [ASUS ROG] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MMMMMX2/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00MMMMMX2&linkCode=as2&tag=pcgaho-20) if you want a "gaming PC". [Dell Inspiron] (http://www.dell.com/us/p/inspiron-17-5749-laptop/pd?oc=dncwh2436s&model_id=inspiron-17-5749-laptop) All around Dell machine with a 17" screen and nvidia card.

Otherwise you could build a mITX PC example example 2 and cart the PC around with a monitor and wireless mouse/keyboard.

In your case, I'm pretty sure you want a laptop. So I would go and find the best deal you can on a decent laptop brand that has a dedicated video card and SSD. When you graduate college and start working full time - that's when you go and build your dream PC since you won't be moving back and forth.

u/farmthis · 1 pointr/Revit

You should have no problem with a budget of 1000. You can get a very nice laptop for 1000, which would run Revit well for years

The main thing to look for in a laptop is graphics. Dedicated graphics. Look for a slightly outdated (last years model) gaming or mobile workstation type laptop.

Amazon had an Asus "rog" that I myself was looking at getting a few days ago, retailing for 999.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00MMMMMX2/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1421478903&sr=8-1&dpPl=1&dpID=41pgEAuPT5L&ref=plSrch&pi=AC_SX200_QL40

So this would be the top of your budget, but work back from here, find similar machines.

NO integrated graphics.

u/alantima · 1 pointr/pcgamingtechsupport

Mmmmm you are making me rethink the MSI, but I found another laptop a bit cheaper than the Sager, it´s an ASUS Rog, what do you think? http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MMMMMX2/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=

u/UndeadBan · 1 pointr/PKMNRedditLeague

So i have finally have saved money to get myself a new laptop. Only thing is that i am not great with determining what the best value and performance is. I am looking for spending $900-$1000 for a decent gaming laptop.

I found this one but if anyone has a good suggestion for a laptop or a good website to look for.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00MMMMMX2/ref=ox_sc_act_image_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A25GKYFKYYL0J9

u/schnaderhops · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Thanks for the response. I'm not opposed to a 14 ". When I really started think about it I could probably go up to around $900 if it's a good deal. If I could go up closer to 1k, would this be a good option: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MMMMMX2/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00MMMMMX2&linkCode=as2&tag=gameaholicorg-20&linkId=CL2QOHWPYA57UZFU?

u/HugeMcSplooge · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Pre-order link was taken down off amazon, but I've seen others guess that perhaps it should be available by the end of September - I personally cannot confirm if this will be the case. Hopefully that helps.

u/AdmiralSav · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

What do you guys think of this?

http://pcpartpicker.com/list/YBxPKZ

Im trying to stay within a budget, but it all sortof depends how much i can get for my laptop, which a user said could go for 500-900 dollars. I'll use $500 out of my own budget, plus whatever i get selling the laptop, so I guess it depends. Either way, somewhere between 1000 and 1800 looks right. I know it's a large price range... Here's the laptop if anyone has a clue what i could get for it; and yeah it's expensive on amazon now because they don't make them anymore. I purchased the laptop a bit over a year ago.

Are there any comprimises i can make? anything to switch around?

And yes, i do need a keyboard and mouse, but perhaps those two aren't the best choices... any help here?

(I already have a monitor, desk, chair, etc. All the parts in the build are what I need.)

u/SavageWaffle · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Hi, I'm a new PCMR follower, and im getting ready to ascend from using a laptop (ASUS ROG GL551JM) to a PC. the laptop was a stupid descision to be honest... im tethered down 99% of the time and the frames are starting to annoy me. I can't play Witcher 3 on anything but low, my bo3 only runs at 60fps on medium-low settings, and its just getting slow it seems.

So i have 2 questions:

Firstly, how much do you think i could get for this laptop? I want to sell it so i can buy parts for my PC. (Bought it for $900 back in September 2014) Its expensive on amazon because they don't make them anymore.

Secondly, i have a nice samsung monitor from like 2013, but i don't know what the resolution is. How would I check?

Thanks (:

I have this. I can get pics if you're interested by those specs. its the 256gb solid state model. I have the CD player removed and put in a 750gb hard drive in there.

u/randiesel · 1 pointr/hardwareswap

Yeah, I'm totally with you, it's just a matter of what kind of deal I can get. I'd rather not spend $1500 for a laptop I'll likely barely use in 7 months (moving, and will be going back to desktops for most use), but I don't really want to drop $800 and have a negligible increase in capability, so I'm not really sure what to buy.

My immediate reaction is looking at this for a decent price/performance, but again, I really don't know what I'm talking about with laptops anymore, haha!

u/senichi · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

14" isn't a big deal, I don't really care about screen size. The side bar said I needed a size in my title so I looked up my current laptop and just said that. It's not a dealbreaker at all.

Do you know how this compares to the other laptop suggested? This one

If I recall correctly, Dell has a lot of bloatware on it, which I'm not a huge fan of.

u/BeHereNow91 · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

ASUS RoG GL551

I'm shopping in the same price range/size as you are, and someone pointed this one out to me. You're skating closer to the $1000 budget, but you're getting your DVD drive, a faster HDD than most (with the size), and double the memory of most laptops <$1000. I also think the build quality is going to be better with ASUS than other brands, but that's mainly based on testimony rather than experience. Unfortunately, it's going to be hard to find a laptop with a Windows 7 installation.

Reviews on Newegg are mixed, but there's a much better sample size on Amazon, and the reviews there are more comprehensive, as well as more positive. Just don't forget to purchase on Newegg for the better deal.

u/RedBeardedT · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

It's only 3.1lbs heavier but ok. The reason I sugget the asus over the Levovo is that is has a 970m while the Lev has an 860m gpu. Here's an Asus with the 860m and a better CPU and 16G Ram that's about the same price as the Levono.

u/Hoktar · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

This seems to be the lowest priced one currently http://www.amazon.com/GL551JM-DH71-GeForce-GTX860M-Optimus-Technology/dp/B00MMMMMX2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1418232741&sr=8-1&keywords=Asus+rog+laptop

Good specs, but if you want a bigger screen all I saw was one for $1200 which had about the same just the bigger screen with it.

u/TheRealGentlefox · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

I just realized that if I spent an extra few hundred, I could potentially replace my desktop with this laptop, since I've been due for an upgrade. (It can't emulate Melee at 60FPS either)

Current desktop is:

  • Intel G850

  • 4GB RAM

  • GeForce GTS 450

  • 1 TB HDD

Maybe something like this. Not sure on the lifespan of using a laptop as a gaming PC that's on ~16 hours a day though. Also, preferably with a more appealing case. I'm not 13 anymore, red and black don't rock my world. I like the plain silver ASUS normally uses.
u/megatonfist · 1 pointr/bladeandsoul

my asus laptop

dungeon and open world fps are anywhere from 60-80 at "apply to all [4]" settings but in 24m BT raid fps drops to ~25-30 even when graphics are turned to [1], would not recommend. cost me about $1000 few years back

you should try to find something top of the line so you won't regret your purchase

Edit: Also, OS preference is totally subjective. You couldn't pay me to use OSX in a million years. Windows, then Linux for me. I'm just gonna run VM's of whatever OS does the task I want to do best anyway.

u/HamstersOfSociety · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

I'm considering these three laptops.

ASUS N550JK

ASUS GL551JM

Acer V Nitro VN7-791G-77JJ
Data sheet for VN7-791G-77JJ

The acer laptop has the exact same specs as the Acer Aspire VN7-791G-71P5 and the VN7-791G-73AW according to the data sheet on the Acer website. I don't get why the price is different. Mind explaining it to me? The one I am considering is of course the cheapest option out of the three, but the price difference still boggles my mind.

I'd appreciate any comments and opinions!

u/uhhnox · 1 pointr/belgium

I play on a two year old laptop that handles Legion on mid settings very well. I even use a second monitor with it. It gets hot, but that's not a huge issue with a fan nearby.

Legion has been very fun, btw. I've played since vanilla and would recommend this expansion.

Also, on the note of desktop vs laptop: The desktop can seem like a higher start up cost with a monitor, speakers, keyboard, and tower, but the others are right about the upgradeability. I've had the same tower on my desktop for about 12 years now and upgrade inside components whenever I catch something on sale. But, the portability of the laptop is really nice and once it's not up to par for gaming in a couple years, you should still have good resale value for college students.

u/fourdots · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

The Asus GL551JM just launched a few days ago; it's essentially an updated G550 with a 860M. Larger similar to the Y50, spec-wise, though it's a bit too new to know whether it has any major problems. The screen isn't IPS, sadly, but it doesn't seem to be as obviously bad as the Y50's.

u/GoosedSpruce · 1 pointr/ucf

How heavy are you willing to go? For example, is just under 6lbs too heavy? It's rough to get much lighter than that, be ~15 inches, have dedicated GPU and be around $1000, I'll give you that.

Edit to add: If you go back a go back a generation for GPU you can save a fair bit of cash.
