you could also consider this very decent asus as well. it has a great lightweight built, good battery life, powerfull Intel Core i7cpu, GTX 960M gpu, 8GB DDR4 and a graet 512GB SSD. if you are willing to push your budget a bit you could get this great ASUS ROG GL552VW-DH74

> Macs can dual-boot, right?

Yes.

> 13in is nice.

Go for a 15.6 inch one. You don't carry it around and bigger laptops have more powerful components (i7 quad core CPU, more RAM, dedicated GPU and so on).

> how the heck are you supposed to scroll on a Macbook?

Two finger scroll. Almost all Windows laptops have also switched to that.

> Please, just a computer that's not going to hang anymore when I try to run heavy A/V apps.

Get something with an i7 quad core, SSD, enough RAM and a dedicated GPU if you want to edit longer videos. A Nvidia GTX 960M should be plenty. Something like the Asus ROG GL552VW-DH74.

Or go the business line laptop way. A Dell Precision M3510 (you can use the coupon code SAVE100 to get $100 off) or a Lenovo ThinkPad P50 (huge discount if you buy it through the corporate perks offer program, passcode is NJ*CORP) would be also more than decent.

Here

I travel for work so the laptop made sense for me. If you're wanting the extra power, the desktop is recommended. But this guy runs Overwatch on Ultra. RL on max settings. DayZ on High and BF4 on close to max. It's more than enough for me. Just depends on your priorities.

u/captaincrunchey · 2 pointsr/totalwar

My current on the go laptop can run Rome II at Very High at a neat 50-60 fps in most cases, only ever starting to tank in 40v40 unit battles. From what it seems CA is trying to avoid pushing the spec requirements too high to keep their market audience wide, so if it can run RII and Attila well, Warhammer should be no biggie.

u/Orangematz · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

Can you spend more for this?

u/The--Technician · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

For video editing, definitely a quad core processor is needed! That being said, it automatically makes the ROG, the far better option as the K501UX-WH74 has only a dual core processor. Also, should you get the ROG at Amazon as seen here, you save a few dollars.

I would go with this ASUS ROG GL552VW as it comes with Powerful 6th-generation Intel Core i7-6700HQ 2.6GHz. 16GB RAM(for multi tasking and better performance); 1TB 7200RPM Storage.(which is more than enough)+128 GB SSD (just like you wanted), 15.6 inches Matte IPS FHD display(for great gaming experience). 1920 by 1080 resolution. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M gaming graphic card.(one of the best for the price with 4GB VRAM )GameFirst III technology prioritizes the flow of the game data across your network.(that is just a good bonus) Feature the latest USB3.1 Type-C port for more convenient connectivity options. 100 solder points for durability and solid-feel, one piece keyboard with 1.8mm of key travel, gives you responsive keystrokes when typing and entering commands; (for your essay typing, gaming, and online chat) and it is also easily upgraded with an SSD, more HDD storage or more Ram :)

u/shazzam6999 · 2 pointsr/nvidia

That's kind of disappointing. Maybe I'm just cheap but I didn't expect to pay over $2k for a laptop with a 1070 and no SSD.

To elaborate: this ASUS costs $970, similar specs except the GPU and has an SSD. So it seems like the video card itself is costing $1200.

The design of the screen in this picture makes it look like it's from ten years ago too http://i0.wp.com/laptopmedia.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/DSC07126.jpg.

u/imhyungjooo · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

The XPS 15 that the previous comment mentioned is magnificent. I'd totally recommend that if you find a good price.

If you don't like used or refurbished, and want a new shiny one, then go for this

https://www.amazon.com/GL552VW-DH74-15-Inch-Discrete-GeForce-Metallic/dp/B015ZG997I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1468689626&sr=8-1&keywords=rog+gl552

you have an option to add a 128gb SSD. Has great processors and GPU.

I could have recommended you this model as well,

https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-G501VW-BSI7N25-x2033-Notebook/dp/B01E5YKVKK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1468689636&sr=8-1&keywords=rog+g501

but not that much because it only has an HDD in it that will limit the speed of your general college work.

Good luck

Congratulations on your profit and thanks for doing this giveaway, OP!

I hope you don't mind but I've been gaming on a mac for quite a while and I'd love one of these Asus Gaming Laptops that are $1.159k so I can finally play at a decent framerate haha

Again, many thanks for doing this, OP

I second this laptop. This is my only PC and I use it to stream everything from FFXIV MMO to Overwatch and GTA V. I use a second monitor, and there is no delay when I play games on my second monitor. My only suggestion is getting one of those laptop fans you set your laptop on so it keeps it cool (though I never had issue with overheating, but it definitely will keep the temperature down when streaming for long periods).

I stream in 720p, 3000+ bitrate(I think that's the right word lol not by my pc now to check), 30 fps, and CPU usage set to superfast. With these settings I have no issues at all with streaming Overwatch.

Edit: I'd also like to add that I stream with Spotify, Firefox web browser, discord, and my ankhbot program all running, as well as my game and OBS Studio. I also have a G600 mouse and an RGB corsair keyboard hooked up that also have background apps running. Still runs smooth!

Sorry, THIS is what I game on. Regardless, Asus has good gaming laptops lol.

u/thelphelper · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

ok i understand but the ASUS ROG GL552VW-DH74 looks good as well

u/OddLawnGnome · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

As video and photo editing are a consideration, you actually stand to get a real benefit from moving to DDR4 RAM. Therefore I suggest the following from Asus. You've got the best possible processor under the $1800 price point, 16GB of RAM, an SSD for a boot/game drive, AND a 1TB HDD for storing your picture and video projects. Then for games, you've got a GTX960M which will run basic games easily and give you at least medium settings on intensive games. As far as build quality, Asus has been making the ROG series for a very long time and they're always good quality units. 300 reviews and an average of 4 out of 5 stars speaks to the fact that Asus knows how to build a laptop.

Alternatively, if you want to keep your budget down a little more, it has a sibling which takes out the SSD (but still has the slot if you want to add one in later) and bumps the VRAM down from 4GB to 2GB. Since 2+GB of VRAM only really has uses when you're using a screen that is over 1080p, you won't notice any difference in performance between the two versions.

I game on a laptop due to having to travel frequently for work and I purchased this!

It runs everything on mid settings (5 in game settings) except for raids with 20+ people in it. On fights like Mythic Sisters, I lower it to a 3 and occasionally lowest settings because it's just a little too much. When I'm doing world quests & leveling, I keep it at mid settings and it doesn't get too hot and performs very well. Feel free to use this as a baseline but just remember, you will get significanly less bang for your buck on laptops but you need it for school so take that priority first!

edit: I've seen that WOW uses processors significantly more than other games so maybe beefing up your processor will have better results. I cannot confirm this however

u/atl126 · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

I'm in the exact same boat as you. I've been laptop hunting for a few weeks now and most likely will be getting the one I'll link at the end. Best specs for approx $1000. Only thing is, it does not have a 4k screen. asus

u/CheekyDucky · 1 pointr/Filmmakers

would this be alright for video editing or is it not powerful enough?

u/chairamaswamy · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Lol what? Look at ASUS ROG's and MSI's latest offerings at that price range and you get basically all of that minus the portability. The prices may drop even further as more and more gaming laptops start to use the pascal cards. Also most cards at that price range are not dual core at all, that is a lie. Any laptop with the 6700HQ, which is the most common high end laptop core, is quad core, not including hyperthreading.

This may work, but portability is lacking and has a 1337 look so you may not like it: https://www.amazon.com/GL552VW-DH71-15-Inch-Discrete-GeForce-Metallic/dp/B015ZG997I?th=1

I have this one: https://www.amazon.com/GL552VW-DH74-15-Inch-Discrete-GeForce-Metallic/dp/B015ZG997I/ref=sr_1_4?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1482601650&sr=1-4&keywords=%2FROG-GL552VW

Battery seems to be a bit less but since you don't care it should be ok.
Its also 74 dollar above budget. There is one below 1000 dollars though but it doesn't have an ssd and only 2gb memory.

this is a great deal! should run those games more than great. EDIT: just found THIS ONE and it is an even better deal! definitely get this one. better than the other laptops up there it is worth the buy.

u/Gaardc · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Might be a bit late, if you're still up for it, can you recommend a gaming/work laptop? I do graphic design and want to be able to play (sims medium/Skyrim medium-high/ maybe WoW high).
Need to handle InDesign Photoshop and Illustration, at least both at the same time (not while playing though). I also do video sometimes but not often.

I was thinking this LENOVO YOGA 710.
I had a Lenovo -different model- in the past and died right after the year.
The "clicking" one of the reviews mentioned is real for Lenovos and not exclusive of this one, seems it's a card issue.

My other option was this ASUS ROG (the SSD version)
---- https://www.amazon.com/dp/B015ZG997I/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_sFeQybGVJG2JX

It doesn't have to be one of these in particular. In general I'd like something with an i7 quad core SSD and maybe no higher than $1100; preferably something as close to this year as possible. If the deal is good I might be able to throw an extra dollar or two.

Something durable that I won't need to change within a year would be fantastic.

PS: Sorry on mobile and not sure how to link.

I grabbed this one last year on sale for $830 you might want to shop around a bit though: Asus GL552VW

u/The_Lope · 1 pointr/laptops

Oh wow didn't know these were an option. Not too bad of a price. Are there similar options for a couple hundred less? Maybe with the 960m?

EDIT: Maybe this would be a good option?

u/worried_walrus · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Oh sorry for the confusion. We are supposed to either have a device with 'Integrated active digital stylus' which the asus ux501vw does not or a combination of devices that meet the total requirement. People recommend getting something like a bamboo if I get a strict professor that requires a stylus that way I can save money because I won't use the touchscreen otherwise. Battery life is important but I don't particularly care for a gtx 970m because I have a gaming desktop and won't play new games on the laptop. If i play a game it will be on an emulator or something like Halo CE that doesn't need a good GPU. So I'm probably going to decide between either the ASUS ROG GL552VW-DH74 or the Acer Aspire V15 Nitro Black Edition VN7-592G-71ZL.

u/Telogor · 1 pointr/Warframe

This is probably as good as you're going to get for a low-cost laptop. You might be able to get a steady 30 FPS at minimum settings. Going a little more expensive will net you more performance and an SSD for good Windows performance. The sweet spot in price/performance ratio would probably be this, but the lack of an SSD pains me. If I were to buy a gaming laptop, the lowest-end model I would get would be this Asus ROG.

u/AlexHeart · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

I was looking at the GL-552VW. Any really compelling reason to go with the 501 instead? The 552 has a SSD pre-installed, along with 16gb ram, and a 4gb 960 instead of the 2gb, and it's only a hundred bucks more.

u/TacticalBastard · 1 pointr/laptops

The ROG is the one I would reccomend, the GPU should be about even to the GTX 760.

I use the Anker 10-USB hub and it works perfectly fine for me.

u/malvinvnv · 1 pointr/laptops

Since your budget might be decent, maybe something like this. One caveat is that it looks a tad gamer-y. Another would be the K501LX.This one will have less CPU and GPU grunt, but it's not a slouch. Lastly, this one might suit you. The Lenovo IdeaPad 700. Seems like a good system to me.

All of these models are a strong 900p performers. and as for 1080p gaming, you can, to a certain extent.
