all the reviews for products like these say that the iMacs wouldnt accept a 1080 signal for some reason. the fault was on Apples end apparently but now its fixed. take a look at the reviews on amazon about this one and the Kanex HD one

It doesn't work the way you might hope but something like it is possible. You will want to read about Target Display Mode:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3924

After that, one of these devices should do the trick of enabling you to connect to the iMac in target display mode.

Then all you need is a device with an HDMI output like a Roku or an Xbox.

What kind of 24" Dell Ultrasharp only has DP in? Can't you just use DVI?

That adapter is one way, designed to just pass HDMI signals via DP, like virtually every such adapter on the market. This is a much easier task because the Displayport output spec is backwards compatible with DVI and HDMI in most cases. I don't know of any way to actually go in the reverse direction. Found this out when trying the same thing with an xbox 360 and my U2311.

EDIT: If you insist on using the HDMI out to DP, there is a very expensive active adapter that will convert HDMI to mini Displayport, which then could be adapted to full displayport. And only outputs 720p. =P. Not worth it.

Or just use a HDMI to DVI cable, which is trivial, but is just adding unnecessary complexity over ordinary DVI.

In theory one of the big advantages of displayport is flexible connections. There are things like this 1:3 splitter that could work, but again quite a bit more expensive than is necessary and I can't figure out where to buy it at the moment.

I used to use my iMac as a monitor, its a slightly older model, but this adapter worked flawlessly.
