Corkscrew pins are remarkably secure, don't pull on your hair, and keep my bun loose looking while it keeps its shape and doesn't get undone. I buy the ones by Goody just because that's what was available in the store. You might want to have 4-6 of those pins. Make sure you don't get the "mini" ones.
Depending how long and thick your hair is... Mine is to the middle of my back but not super thick. I used to think those pins were a gimmick, but I had to secure my daughter's bun for ballet and this is what was recommended. I love them!

i went from so short i could not put into a pony-tail to now touching my butt. about 3 years ago i got serious about hair health, and i think just now i am finally getting the hang of it. regular trimmings and these are the two things i credit with the most progress.
just recently i have tried some temporary haircolor, the type that comes out after 28 washes. it doesn't really come out but it doesn't really damage my hair to where i say i will never do it again. :) so maybe some temporary bright red is still in your future.
