>Are you a dashcam salesman or what?

No. I am just pro-dashcam, because it should be common sense to have one.

> Even a dash camera only points forward. It does nothing to prove anything about side or rear impact incidents.

False As well as wide-angle lenses, or multiple sets.

> Or if it's a hit and run and the image is too fuzzy to get the plate number it's not very good either.

A good camera can record 1080p at 60FPS. That's still good for most. Even if you can't get a plate you have a vehicle make, model, color, and potential driver description.

It's always better to have one than to not. But hey, stupid is as stupid does, I can't make people get them.

There are not a large number of dashcams that offer 'buffered parking' meaning the dashcam will record for a period of time before motion is detected, and for a period of time after motion stops. Of the dashcams that do offer this, most are quite expensive. However, there is one that is quite reasonably priced and is a 2-camera set-up, one camera for the windshield and one camera for the rear window. I think you should feel well-covered after installing a unit in each of your vehicles.

The dashcam is the Blacksys CF-100 2-channel dashcam

The features of this dashcam include:

  • High definition video recording

  • Supercapacitor instead of battery, meaning that you can expect it to perform reliably in all weather conditions

  • Motion detection

  • G-sensor (shock sensor)

  • Image stabilization

  • 24/7 Smart Parking Mode

  • Uses up to 64GB memory card for extended video storage

Ideally, these dashcams should be hardwired to the vehicle fuse box, which is not difficult to do and there are many videos on YouTube showing how to do it. Many users have hardwired dashcams in vehicles that are under warranty, without apprehension. You will not be modifying the car as such, and if you have any misgivings about doing it yourself you can always got a friend or a professional to help you out.

If you absolutely want to avoid hardwiring and if you car lighter socket is always live even after the ignition is turned off, you can keep the dashcam plugged into the lighter socket. If you do not have that option you are left with supplying power to the dashcam by external battery. Here you have several options.

    1. You can get a power bank to plug the dashcam into when you park. This is the least expensive route and it quite popular as long as you don't mind the daily routine of plugging the camera in every time you park. These power banks will supply power for a few days before needing to be recharged. I will provide a link for you.

    2. Battery Pack. A new battery pack on the market is the Blackvue Power Magic B112 Battery Pack this device is plugged into the lighter socket, it stays plugged in, it provides power to the dashcam when parked and it recharges itself as you drive. While driving, the dashcam is being powered from the 12v lighter socket. You don't have to remember to plug it in every day, it stays there. You may think that this convenience is worth the price.

I personally have the BlackSys CF100, and it works great. The only issue I have is that it's pretty visible on the dash, so I have to take it off when I park my car. If I was to purchase again, I'd buy the Rexing S500. They didn't make this at the time I purchased one, and they also didn't have a model with two cameras that wasn't more than $250.

Blacksys has a dual camera dashcam, which is probably what you're looking for:

Blackvue DR650GW 2-Channel - $400 though (pricey)

Blackvue DR550GW 2-Channel - $300 (still pricey)

Both those are two most recommended 2-channel systems right now that have the most positive feedback.

There is a more budget 2-channel called the BlackSys CF-100 - going for $90 right now.

Also, check out Dashcamtalk. They have a lot of info that you can read up on. Included the pros and cons to all 3 systems I linked. Lot's of great info there and in their forums.

Hope this helps.

if I buy that, is that all I need? or do I need to buy storage or something else?

> Is there any reason not to go with dual Thinkware F50s? Also, it's not rated very highly on Amazon, but with 8 reviews who can tell.

You could completely go with 2 Thinkware F50s. To be honest I didn't even think of that as an option.
It has more ratings on BestBuy's website and here is a review of the Thinkware F50.

> Is the CF-100 just junky?

I couldn't find the Budget Dual Cam: BlackSys CF-100 ($95 USD) <- At that price. I could find it at ($159.00) but that makes it a different deal. I don't mean to speak negatively of it, I just liked the lower price, and purchasing through Amazon. Find some reviews on it, it could be a great deal, I just wouldn't know.
