You haven't gotten any suggestions, but I will let you know what I have done. I've purchased crate pads (the thin type like these). I get the kind that are machine washable. I use that as a bottom layer and put fleece in with the dogs so they can burrow. I also use the fleece in case there are accidents. It's easy to throw in the washer and clean.
For me, the only time my dogs have tried to destroy their bedding was when my one pup was scared during a thunderstorm. She destroyed the nice theraputic bed I had in that crate. I had this for my dog Winston after his back surgery. It was a great bed and I would buy it again.
