/u/GusFringus - congratulations on the success of your business! Yes, it's probably time for an upgrade.

Instead of a [$1999 Canon XA20] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00C3R16O2/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00C3R16O2&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20) though, you might want to consider the [$1999 Sony PXW-X70] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NPAJH8I/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00NPAJH8I&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20).

This camera has a relatively large 1" sensor (much larger than the XA10/20's sensor), a 10-bit 4:2:2 broadcast quality codec (the XA10/20 records to an 8-bit 4:2:0 codec) plus it has SDI out, and a super bright OLED viewfinder - features missing from the XA10/20.

The X70's 1" sensor makes it possible to create shallow depth of field, as seen in [this example] (http://player.vimeo.com/video/112019374).

In addition, its optical steady shot system makes for very stable handheld shots.

Walking shots in this travel piece are an example of handheld video from the X70: [San Blas Islands of Panama. December 2014.] (http://player.vimeo.com/video/119601178)

It's also a good exterior B roll camera, as seen here: [NYC Stock Footage using the PXW-X70] (http://player.vimeo.com/video/116789229)

In my view, the X70's optical steady shot system, large sensor built-in pro XLR inputs and modern and robust broadcast-ready 10-bit codec make it a great choice - while its large sensor will give you much better control over depth of field than most camcorders in its class.

It also has a [$499 upgrade path] (http://adorama.evyy.net/c/60286/51926/1036?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.adorama.com%2FSOCBKZX70FX.html) to 3840x2160 Ultra High Definition "4K" resolution - something that would be impossible for the 1920x1080p XA20.

Here are a few more examples of the image quality this camera can produce:

Documentary

  • [Documentary about Love, Food and Lots of Chocolate. Bogota, Colombia by Beekeeperstories] (https://vimeo.com/138662500)

  • [Documentary - Mask Maker in Venice Italy by Beekeeperstories] (https://vimeo.com/137492359)

  • [Classic Days - Schloss Dyck 2015] (https://vimeo.com/135595246)

  • [Documentary - Life of street performer from Japan] (https://vimeo.com/139793673) (intercut with the Canon T3i)

    Musical Performance

  • [Chris August sings The Maker] (https://vimeo.com/118133998) (intercut with the large sensor, interchangeable lens Panasonic GH4)

  • [EVRA - Lightbearer (Official) by Rasmus G. Sejersen] (https://vimeo.com/141400868)

Here are a couple of examples of the image quality this camera can produce after the 4K upgrade (please watch at 2160p and your monitor's highest resolution):

  • [Test Sony PXW-X70 in 4K by magazinevideo] (https://youtu.be/iQDiCeoZwP4)

  • [Sony pxw-x70 test 4K - Night view of Seoul, Korea by yoonkee sung] (https://youtu.be/MAYWXxBdWZQ)

In my view, the 4K upgradeable X70 is the best all-in-one video solution you can get in this price range.

Hope this is helpful and, whatever camera you decide to buy, best of luck!

I think you'd be really happy with this Canon Professional Camcorder for legal work. It's pretty rugged and you'll have a lot of money left over for your computer and audio equipment.

How about the [Canon XA20 Professional Camcorder] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00C3R16O2//ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&linkCode=ll1&tag=vidred-20&linkId=ceed1429bb93a15eacc2c3cd23165a1c) it has an approxiamte battery life 145 minutes and has really good recording quality. 4.5 star camera. Specs:

Hi Kepgnar - have you seen this (shot with the XA20)?

http://vimeo.com/83437485

If you don't mind the deep depth of field, the [$1999 XA20] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00C3R16O2/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00C3R16O2&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20) will do a great job.

If you want video with more cinematic shallow depth of field that works like a camcorder (electronic viewfinder, fast autofocus, power zoom lenses, tilting LCD), you can save some money by getting something like a [$998 Panasonic GH3] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009B0WREM/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B009B0WREM&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20) with a [$40 hot shoe handle] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HJGV33Q/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00HJGV33Q&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20) and a couple of power zoom lenses (e.g., the [14-42mm] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005J5TZVG/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B005J5TZVG&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20) and [45-175mm] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005J5TZWK/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B005J5TZWK&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20)). With this camera, you can get results like this:

http://vimeo.com/67663630

This camera records to AVCHD .MTS or Quicktime .MOV, so it goes straight into FCP-X without transcoding.

Here's my GH3 with a hot shoe top handle on it:

I'm currently using 2x of these (borrowed from my roommate)
http://www.amazon.com/Canon-Stabilized-Optical-Camcorder-Internal/dp/B006UMMP8C

I'm not happy with how the image quality turned out, even with a bit of post-processing.

I'll probably be using an XA20 for the side cam next time:
http://www.amazon.com/Canon-8453B002-XA20-Professional-Camcorder/dp/B00C3R16O2/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1413076746&sr=1-1&keywords=XA20

And my Nikon D3200 for the overhead cam (I want to use the XA20 for the overhead cam but my roommate won't let me because he thinks my setup is too dangerous)
