Short answer - Trail runners should serve you JUST fine. I'd wear stretchy gaitors with them, but it's up to you. I wear a hybrid shoe with rain proof gaitors for a mix of benefits.

A word on boots and gore-tex: Unless the shoe is WELL ventilated, skip the goretex and buy something that can breath instead of lock in the moisture. Sweating and Gore-tex in a shoe will lead to rotting out the inside of the shoe, even though you can probably step in big puddles with more comfort.

In all of my long distance hikes, I've worn ankle high Merrel boots with a pair of mid-shin gaitors. I found it to be the best of both worlds. The shoe breathed like a champ, the gaitors kept anything from sneaking into where my feet were hiding, and the rain puddles were never a problem.

I like having a stiffer sole in the northern states where the rocks start to show themselves (I'm looking at you, New Hampshire). It allows you to put any part of your foot on the edge of something and not have your shoe fail under your weight and the weight of your pack.
