Lolthien's advice is very good. Take an interest in people. Anyone. The shoes question - I do that when I see a cool pair of shoes on a guy. "Love the shoes. My wife won't let me buy any like that so I have to admire yours." Smiles and laughter follows, especially if our respectives wives are with us - and they will often chime in. You may have a 20 second interaction or 20 minutes. Take an interest in what people have to say. Listen to their story.

You want change. Only you can bring that into your life. You have to fix you.

I will offer two more peices of advice.

One, read Desiderata. There is much to be learned there. For me, Desiderata is not just a poem to be read once and remembered fondly. It is my compass in life. When things are not going well, it guides me back to a central point. I can always start anew. No, it isn't the answer to the universe, but it works for me.

Two, Mr. Rogers. I recall a story about a guy who went to a cafe for lunch - and there was Mr. Rogers, sitting alone, having a bowl of soup. Guy asked if he could join him. "Sure" says Mr. Rogers. So they sat and talked. Thirty minutes later Mr. Rogers shook his hand and thanked him for the company during lunch and left for some appointment. After he left, he realized that he had just spent half an hour with a really nice and somewhat famous person - and he hadn't learned anything about this man. And Mr. Rogers new his whole life story. A wonderful opportunity missed. For what it's worth, even those of us who aren't famous or weathy or have some other defining characteristic have a story to tell. If you listen you may be amazed.
