For outright erotic books, you're right (mostly). However, for those with relationship-related or historical content that are not explicit whatsoever, Amazon is deranking LGBT books while leaving similar heterosexual ones alone. They are not deranking all books related to LGBT issues: those promoting ex-gay therapy seem fine (the first search result for homosexuality is currently this book), but this is deranked.
Some sources: the Examiner, Gawker, SPI, LA Times blog, another blog (blogger is an author whose work was deranked).
Amazon is free to do what they like, since it is a private website, but people should be informed of Amazon's decisions and process this in reference to their personal values, whatever they are. I'm sure it'll all get cleared up soon, anyway. Easter weekend is very busy time for Amazon to roll out a new feature, and I suppose they hoped they could time it clandestinely.
Hi. Gay here who came out 23 years ago.
Best advice, and I’ve given away 30+ copies over the years, is this book. Both sides need to know the stages the other is going through. Communication and UNDERSTANDING is key. Parents/Family/Friends sometimes need time to almost mourn the parts of you they expected may happen, but may change now.
I’d have your boyfriend read this book then give to his family.
