I thought some more about this post today. There are plenty of web sites about how to do a good job interview but here's what I'd tell candidates. Bear in mind these are my personal preferences, I'm an INTP, and I'm 47.

Do:

  • Arrive 15 minutes early.
  • Be nice to receptionists, administrative assistants, door/security people. They will talk about you after you've left.
  • Smile.
  • Wear a suit. It doesn't have to be fancy or new, but does need to be clean and pressed and fit reasonably well.
  • Dress in neutral tones.
  • Ladies, if your skirt hits above the knee when standing make sure it doesn't slide up your thigh too much when you sit down. I am not interested in interviewing your underwear.
  • Wear understated makeup in natural tones.
  • Wear understated jewelry. And no jewelry at all is preferable to cheap jewelry.
  • Scrub your fingernails.
  • Clean your glasses lenses. Trying to interview someone through a haze of oil, dust, and smudges is just gross.
  • Take a moment to think about an answer before you give it.
  • Bring a briefcase or portfolio, not a backpack, and nothing made out of parachute-type fabric.
  • Bring several hard copies of your resume/CV. Sometimes I pass these on to colleagues if I don't hire that person but they made a good impression on me.
  • Pay attention to your shoes. Clean them. No stilettos.
  • Turn off and put away your phone. I don't even want to know you have one while you're in the office.
  • Bring ID, references/contacts, directions/instructions, questions.
  • Focus and show interest.
  • Know at least a little about the company.
  • Thank me for taking the time to meet with you.

    Don't:

  • Use your phone in the office, even the outer office.
  • Look at the clock during the interview.
  • Interrupt me.
  • Wear perfume/cologne. In fact, try to use unscented shampoo, lotion, hairstyling products, etc. If my office still smells like you after you've left, you're not getting the job.
  • Wear shoes you can't walk in comfortably, or shoes that make a lot of noise when you walk.
  • Overuse the word "excited."
  • Play with your hair (this goes for guys, too).
  • Fold your arms across your body. No one wants to hire this.
  • Bring in coffee/soda/etc., headphones, gum, candy, breath mints, a hat/cap, piercings (one in each ear is fine), friends.
  • Slouch.
  • Complain - about past employers or anything else.
  • Ask about salary, working from home, flex hours, or vacation time. Wait until you've been offered the job to negotiate.

Ask (not necessary all of these):

  • What other departments/positions would I be working/coordinating with?
  • What would be the most important things to accomplish in the first 30 days?
  • What do you think is the best part of working here?
  • Are there any other questions I can answer for you?
  • Can you show me or describe some of the projects the person who previously held this position was working on? What did you like and not like about their performance on those projects?
  • Can I see the work area/cube/desk/office? (If you can, this is a good opportunity to glean information about the corporate culture and possibly meet future coworkers, esp. if there is going to be a second round of interviews.)

    Want to impress me?

  • Take notes during the interview and use a nice (not disposable) pen.
  • Know about my company's competition.
  • Use a pocket portfolio for each hard copy of your resume, with a slot for your business card.
  • Be able to reiterate the primary responsibilities of the position you're applying for.
  • I want to know that you can identify and solve problems so be prepared with specific examples.
  • Know some of the current trends and concerns in the field and ask my opinion about them. "What's your opinion about the impact AirBnB has been having on local real estate markets?"...I will remember that: 1. you asked my opinion, and 2. you know something about the field unrelated to the interview.
  • At the end of the interview if you want the job, say so directly.
  • A hand-written (if you have decent handwriting) snail mail thank you note still scores points. Put it in the mail that same day if possible.

Given your budget (and assuming you want to buy a ballpoint), I’d recommend the Cross Classic Century: it’s sleek and looks expensive. I was given this pen years ago and I still marvel at it every time I hold it. Link: Cross Classic Century Lustrous Chrome Ballpoint Pen https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00006IECI/

You can't go wrong with something by Cross, although I will warn that Cross refills tend to be pretty terrible - if you do go with a Cross, you'll probably want to pick up a Cross-style refill from either Schmidt or Monteverde.

It may not be the fanciest, but I love Uniball Deluxe Micros. Smooth, consistent ink that seems to last a while. If you want ballpoint, look into getting a Cross brand pen. I received one for graduation and love it. This is the one I have. Just under $20 too!

Nice pens are my go-to gift in this kind of situation. I collect and use fountain pens, but some people don't like the learning curve.

The Cross Classic Century model is one of my favorites.

Fisher Space Pen looks like it could be a winner minus the twist cap.

If she's dead-set on the twist mechanism, the classic Cross Century and Cross Tech 2 sound like winners. The Century is selling for $26 on Amazon US though you could search for a Made in USA version on eBay.

If you don't mind splurging, you can take a chance on the Rotring 800. Good weight, brass construction, takes G2 refills, and has a twist-open mechanism. Should set you back ~$60 with shipping from Amazon Japan, though you can wait for it to drop - I bought mine at around the 5200 yen ($47) mark.
