There are others that people like to recommend the old Denons, specially the D2000 that can be found cheaper in Ebay, but its a pain in the butt to find, same with the MDR-XB1000.
Some people will also mention some JVC ones, but i havent had the chance to try them. Btw some people will recommend the HE400i and please no stay away from them. Stay away from Planars in general if you want Basshead levels of Bass, the LCD-2 Pre-Fazor being the only exception (i tried it like a year ago so i dont remember a lot but i liked it).
As a guy who wishes he had $300 to spend on headphones, I'd look at one of the following were I in your position: Audio-Technica ATH-AD900, Denon AHD2000, or AKG K701. Possibly Sennheiser HD600s as well. Head-fi.org is a great place to go for more info. Noise-canceling is unnecessary, and actually undesirable, in my opinion.
AH! We're the same!!!
Well, then It's pretty close then... Reason I say that, the Schiit Asguard (its a solid state amplifier, as opposed to a tube amplifier) would likely be a better choice if you like rock and rap. But Tube amps make stuff like Jazz, older rock (think Eagles) and vocals come alive.
But it really depends on the headphones you are using. If you listen to more rap and rock, I would say pick up a pair of Denon 2000's. I love a closed pair of headphones as opposed to an openback. I have AHD2000's, DT770's, RE0's, ESW9's... I like all of them equally. But the DT770's have much better isolation.
Thinking about the Denon AHD2000s.
Those are definitely in a much higher price bracket than I'd care to shoot for at my income level, but yeah, they definitely seem to be solid based on reviews. My HD 280s are fantastic for what I paid for them, which was $80, so I don't think it's fair to compare the two.
I personally really like my Denon headphones. The best I have owned.
They make a bit cheaper model, too.
Beyer DT770
or Dave Rat's newest pick, the
Denon D2000
The Denon D2000s are out of production. I believe Denon is releasing a new product line to replace them shortly.

Amazon still has some for sale.
Is this a good deal for a AHD2000? I've been looking for awhile.

If you can find them, the Denon D2000's are insane. They were just discontinued though, so the supply will good down soon. Besides that I would suggest the Audio Tehnica Ath AD700s They sound really good, and have a massive soundstage. They do have a smaller, more calculated bass though, so it might not be what you are looking for. And they look absurd.
You should probably check the sidebar.
You may want to split your budget and buy the FiiO E07k and some headphones for $225ish. How about the Denon AHD2000's? Or the Beyerdynamic Custom One Pros?
Review of the latter on here, pretty great review guy actually: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDBWrSENTps
The 280-pros sound terrible in comparison to the HD-555 entry-level audiophile cans.
280 pros excel in passive noise cancellation, not quality (the audiophile ones are all open-designed).
The 650's are Sennheiser's former flagship set. The 280's can barely even be considered a headphone in comparison.
If you want to upgrade sometime, hilariously, these $14 Koss headphones sound better than most non-audiophile headphones at low-medium volumes.
The HD-555's sound way better than the 280 Pros, if you wanna go for the audiophile route; they can be had for about $90. If you're a bass whore and have a bit of a higher budget, I can't recommend Denon AHD-2000 enough (about $230 if you get them at the right place).
Make sure you give any audiophile headphone a week or two of heavy use for burning-in to sound the best. It makes a huge difference. And if you thought your experience the other day was amazing... oh my.. there is a whole new world to discover yet.
I have these
I discovered time travel, but only use it to acquire future headphones. Ha, I have the older version of them which these are based off of Denon AHD2000.
Don't knock them until you try them! I have these http://www.amazon.com/Denon-AHD2000-Performance-Over-Ear-Headphones/dp/B000MVEC0Q and absolutely love them. Compared them to Audio Technica ATH-AD700 and Sennheiser HD-280 (not really the same class) and they are miles better IMO.

these
My main pair, that I use at work are:
http://www.amazon.com/Denon-AHD2000-Performance-Over-Ear-Headphones/dp/B000MVEC0Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1324658033&sr=8-1
Ultra comfortable (nice pseudo-leather earcups, rather than the more common cloth that is usually itchy, hot, or both), and sound quite good, even when driven with a standard headphone out. Plus, unlike most high-end headphones, they're closed rather than open so there's relatively low sound leakage, which is a big plus in the office.
The Beyer 880s (http://www.amazon.com/Beyer-Dynamic-Premium-600-Headphones/dp/B0024NK35S/ref=sr_1_8?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1324658124&sr=1-8) I have at home sound a little bit better, but need a proper amplifier to drive them well (at least a decent surrond receiver, a dedicated headphone amp is even better), and they aren't quite as comfortable. So, objectively, under ideal conditions, a bit better than the Denons, but they don't get as much use.
I love these.
Picked em up on Amazon for ~$225 about 6 months ago. Not sure why the price jumped. I would search around for a deal on them. They're great, albeit large.
Thanks a lot! They are a pair of [Dennon AHD2000] (http://www.amazon.com/Denon-AHD2000-Performance-Discontinued-Manufacturer/dp/B000MVEC0Q)that I have been modifying and improving for about 5 years. I had a really nice guy in Wisconsin make me the awesome looking wooden cups, as well as doing the Markle mod (add some foam too close the sound a bit more), and re-cable, as the one that came with it started to frey. One of the cups also broke off, so I went to ACE hardware and replaced pretty much every screw in the headphones.
Needless to say, I'm very proud of them, and honestly love the sound. I listen to a lot of disco house and classical soloists, which really just sound awesome on these guys.
Apologies for the rant, but I just can't help myself when someone asks!
