Let's see, what's in mine (bear in mind, I'm currently floating between rentals with occasionally dubious avionics and an SR22; when I have my own bird in her hangar, what I carry around vs. keep in the aircraft will probably change a bit)...

Flight bag: Brightline B4 Swift

Side Pocket Charlie

  • Yaesu FTA550 handheld radio in the main compartment. The antenna fits in one of the three skinny external pockets.

  • Red/White LED Flashlight in one of the other skinny external pockets.

    Side Pocket Alpha

  • Camelbak Eddy 0.6L water bottle

    Pocket Cap Front

  • Inner sleeve: iPad mini 4 128GB WiFi

  • Top inner pocket: My cell phone (easily found during flight, out of the way)

  • Top big pocket: Wallet, car keys, house keys, spare small flashlight, misc. RAM mount bits (double one inch ball adapter, short link). Also gate cards for SMO and TOA.

  • Top external pocket: Lightning-to-3.5mm adapter; Lightning cable; 3.5mm M/M audio cable

  • Middle inner pocket: ASA fuel tester

  • Middle big pocket: KMASHI 10000mAh Portable Power Bank and microUSB charging cable

  • Middle external pocket: Pens, including a couple of Glowseen LED Light Pens.

  • Bottom internal pocket: A multitool, unless I'm flying commercially somewhere (e.g., to pick up a plane)

  • Bottom big pocket: A 12V 4.8A USB charger, a 120V 4.8A charger, and sundry.

  • Bottom external pocket: A travel container of Aleve, other misc. charging cords (USB C, mini USB, micro USB, a spare Lightning cable), some spare AA batteries.

    Center Section Four

  • Bose Aviation X headset in its own case (which has four spare AA batteries itself, in the loops).

  • RAM cradle for the iPad 4, regular length arm, claw, suction cup mount (for planes without a yoke).

  • RAM holder for the Yaesu radio, small arm for it.

  • Stratus 2S in its suction cup mount.

  • Inner sleeve: Push To Talk Switch and Yaesu headset adapter (came with the radio)

  • Top pocket: American Optical Original Pilot sunglasses, checkbook.

    Flat Cap Rear

  • Inner sleeve: A MacBook Air or Surface Pro 2, for longer trips

  • Outer "velcro flap covered" pocket: In a waterproof plastic envelope: medical, pilot certificate, and some other documents.

  • Outer open pocket: ASA kneeboard, notepad, pen/stylus in the pen loop on the kneeboard.

Everything in there is there because I needed it at one point. It's not too heavy or cumbersome, and I only have to worry about grabbing one thing heading out the door. Or evacuating the wreckage. Whatever.
