I'll recommend two lights for ya. Both are around $60 shipped, so I hope that will do if you don't find any other options. Both have multiple modes but a separate button to sort through them so you can turn it on and off with a single click in whatever mode you left it in.

Nitecore P12

and the

Fenix UC30

Both have the capability of about 1000 lumens, take 18650s or cr123s, have great runtimes, and are middle of the road in size.

I don't think either light would let you down if you needed it to work.

You've come here for help, but you've brought along some false preconceptions and don't seem willing to revisit those. This limits how much we can help you.

Alkaline batteries have high internal resistance, which means they can produce a limited amount of power. They're great for TV remote controls and wireless mice, but can't come anywhere near what a good flashlight will require. At best, this means you won't be getting the full performance you've paid for, and at worst it means the batteries will leak and ruin the light. If you absolutely can't reconsider this, go buy a Streamlight Stylus Pro (2x AAA) or Maglite ML25LT (2x C). Both are carefully designed to the limitations of alkaline batteries and perform well on them. I don't have a AA recommendation for alkalines, because nobody makes one with good enough real-world performance to fit between those two.

If you need more performance than that, you need more powerful batteries. Without exception, that means lithium or rechargeable chemistries. Fortunately, modern rechargeable batteries are not as hopeless as they used to be. Eneloop low-self-discharge NiMH cells can hold charge for a year or two, and lithium-ion cells offer far more performance for even longer. I promise, the modern stuff isn't like old NiCd or early NiMH where it'll go dead on the shelf before the next time you use it.

If neither of those is acceptable, you can also get flashlights which run on very powerful, shelf-stable CR123 disposable lithium batteries. These are ruinously expensive in stores, but only about $1 each online.

Between your prejudices and your needs, I believe the best option for you will be something which can run on an 18650 lithium-ion cell and recharge from a cell phone charger, while also accepting CR123 as a backup if you forget to charge. CR123 have a 10-year shelf life, so you could easily keep a pack around for emergencies while using the cheaper rechargeable most of the time.

Please consider the Fenix UC30 or the Nitecore MH10.
