> I'm pretty sure you can pair any bluetooth headphones or headset, and use that for audio.

I don't think so. In my experience, that's just for in-game communication (like talking to others online).

> For wired headphones with a 3.5mm jack, you'll need the composite (red/white plugs) to 3.5mm converter.

This should work, I think. Here's a link to a fairly cheap one, if you want to purchase online.

Edit: Also, if your headphones don't have their own volume control, you could get something like this to adjust the volume.

Along the same lines, they could use a Y splitter, apply an in-line volume control to the left channel, then use another Y splitter to combine. It'd be more parts, but no physical modification.

[Edit] Actually, a Y splitter with built-in volume control would just let you split it and recombine.

You could connect your wired audio cable to an audio cable that has an inline volume control wheel.

Glad to hear you got it working!

This is another quirk of the Xbox, with the limited range it can accept. Too quiet, it won't pick up, too loud, it'll distort.

If you have an extra pair of headphones (can literally be anything), a simple way to reduce the volume would be to get a normal headphone splitter (not TRRS) and connect it to the mic (before the TRRS splitter). The headphones will absorb some of the power coming off the mic, lowering the volume. You don't actually need to wear those headphones or anything, they're literally just to absorb some of the power.

Some sort of external volume control could work too, in the same location (between mic and TRRS splitter). Not an amplified one though, the control shouldn't need any power at all.
