I think Nike just expects that most people are carrying their phones with them and so they're focusing on the iOS and Android apps.
You could buy a pouch to hold the sensor if you want to continue using it.
Just get something like this.
I used it for awhile, and liked it a lot. It helped motivate me to try and beat my previous times or distances, and the online record keeping is nice too. There are pouches you can get, so you don't need to buy the Nike shoes. If I was still jogging a lot, I would get one again (the batteries eventually die in the sensor).
