Don't use Axe! Dear God don't use Axe.
Showering with a good soap should be enough for most people. Pick a soap like Dr. Bronner's or Kirk's Castile. Natural soap, and not a detergent. This will make sure you get clean and not masked.
You could go Aftershave, but most of those have alcohol and can dry your skin. I personally don't use aftershave, just a good unscented face lotion.
Fragrance is something that isn't necessary, but if you find you like scents, you need to explore what you like. For many its a hobby. This is a great forum for exploring scents.

I like to put 2-3 sprays of a good spray at the base of my neck. The heat from you pulse should extend that enough to project, but not be annoying. Don't be the guy who projects through a zip code.
