Reading this book completely changed how I saw drug addiction. Most of these people are trying to escape the trauma of extreme child abuse.

Yes. I realized that I was just substituting one habit for another.

Dr. Gabor Maté in his book, In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters with Addiction, described addiction this way, a need to fill our emptiness, and that temporary fulfillment can come in many forms.

Late to comment, but if you find this topic interesting, Gabor Mate's book In the realm of hungry ghosts is fascinating

I believe that if we began promoting the idea that quitting heroin isn’t actually THAT hard, it would be a lot easier for people to quit.

70-80% of people prescribed opioids for chronic pain DON’T misuse their medication, and 88-92% DON’T develop an opioid use disorder.

How is this possible? How is it that the vast majority of people prescribed “physically addictive” drugs, don’t go on to become drug addicts?

If you read In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts, at one point Dr. Gabor Maté writes about how there are hospitals full of sick people taking HUGE amounts of opiates...and they have absolutely no problems quitting, when the doctor tells them it’s time to quit.

The “physical withdrawals” aren’t the issue.

The issue is psychological...it’s a issue of belief.

The heroin user on the street who believes, “I’m an addict, I can’t simply quit, quitting is too hard...” This person will have a hard time quitting.

The fentanyl user in the hospital who think, “I need to take this medicine for now, but I’ll be able to stop when the doctor tells me to...” This person will quit, and it won’t be a Major Life Struggle.

Yes, we should stop promoting the idea that “quitting is hard.” I’m sure it’s very uncomfortable/painful to go through opiate withdrawal. But the discomfort is entirely bearable. Anyone can go through it.

I'm not sure what type of at risk you're talking but...

Really good around indigenous addictions issues

Addictions and poverty!

Existential psychotherapy and death! (Finding this one really helpful currently, never know when someone with a terminal illness is going to pop up)

Really silly title. But if you can get past that... The first half explains an incredible theoretical framework for explaining that ridiculous thing that happens to brains during the first six months of relationships and why we constantly choose the wrong partners. I reference the ideas from this book constantly, totally invaluable.

No sweat, everyone's suffering from something :)

_In The Realm of Hungry Ghosts_ by Gabor Maté.

He documents life as a doctor in a medical centre in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside – AKA Canada's poorest postal code, AKA the heroin capital of North America.

In it he goes through a lot of the feelings you are, re: going to AA for his addiction, but I don't want to spoil the book for anyone. Very interesting read for those interested in addiction and mental health.

Good luck in your travels. Always remember, you are loved and you are worthy of being the best you.
