I'd recommend trying both methods. I have a soundbase and originally had it plugged into the TV (LG B7) but the sound quality wasn't that great. I then switched to directly connected to the Xbox One X and preferred the sound quality with that setup. To add some more flexibility, I'd recommend considering an optical switch.
