UPS does weight the packages. Try to ship a 40 lbs package and state 10 lbs (to pay less in shipping) and UPS won't deliver unless the shipper has paid for the right freight.

I learned the same thing about hobbies when I got into speakers. When I was first looking at speakers, the KEF LS50 ($1500 a pair normally, they're in sale right now it looks like haha) came up quite a bit, and I thought it was absolutely ridiculous that anyone would ever spend that much money on a pair of speakers!
Well, I've been into speakers for quite a while, and those speakers barely scratch the surface. They're phenomenal speakers, but plenty of people have speakers that are $10k+ and I don't think it's ridiculous now.
I was looking to get an electric bike recently, and at first I was like "why aren't there many options at around $1000 or less?" But then I remembered what happened with speakers, and it makes sense. I just wasn't aware that it was all out there, and that's a big hobby for a lot of people and it can get pretty expensive.
Now I look at pretty much everything like that. Unfortunately, my brother doesn't get it still. I was "into" watches for a bit (I've only got a few, and none of them are very expensive at all). He asked me to find him a watch that looks like x (he described it for me, I don't remember). I found him a Seiko that was $300 or so, because, knowing a lot about watches, I thought "this one is a great value for him". He saw the price tag and said "I was thinking under $100". Sorry bud, that probably won't happen for what you want.
Anyways, this is all to say, don't judge the amount of money someone's hobby costs until you really know what it's about.
For $1500 a pair, I prefer one of these:

Lots of information on the LS50 online; I'd take a serious look. However, I do prefer the Sierra 2's sound, and you might, too, based on your preferences. In terms of a subwoofer for mostly music, I'd take a strong look at the Rythmik F12: http://www.rythmikaudio.com/F12.html Its servo technology will make an audible difference during complicated bass passages. A Sierra 2/F12 combination = music nirvana, IMO.
They are good nearfield speakers. Don't use them as surrounds. haha That's funny.

I see it's your opinion, but "best" monitors at 5"? At $249 a pair? No, not even close.
They may be great for their price, but consider something like these if you want anything close to "best" pair of professional monitors at that size.
The amazon listing is showing $1199.00 for me right now. For gloss black only.
There's a lot of very affordable knockoffs that resemble this chair if you're just interested in the look. The Herman Miller is expensive because it's very high quality (mine was made in 1983 and it still looks pretty great) and because it was designed by Charles and Ray Eames. If you haven't heard of them, they were a remarkable couple who progressed design in many areas.
The speakers aren't too hard to track down used on ebay but they only come in black stock. I found fabric in the OEM JBL colors on ebay to redo the grills. Also, the foam under the titanium dome tweeters tend to degrade on these speakers so there's a good chance you will have to buy modern reproduction tweeters. I'm not saying this to discourage you but let you know there was some work involved.
If I were to buy a new speaker now, I would pick up some KEF LS50's in black and copper. They are a spectacular sounding speaker and I think the most visually stunning speaker on the market.
KEF LS50 at $1099.99
Aaah, that explains the misunderstanding. They're KEF LS50s: http://www.amazon.com/KEF-LS50-Mini-Monitor-Gloss/dp/B00EPDMDZ8

The Mod Team decided to place a more structured post on Black Friday deals. A lot of people are already invested in this thread so I will just sticky this here. Deals at some of the major retailers are likely to come and go often so it will be impossible to have this be fully accurate 100% of the time. If you have any deals you want to see in this sticky post feels free to message me(I WILL miss plenty of deals), otherwise you are still free to post below of course. Lastly, these are just good deals off of MSRP and I will generally post regardless of whatever personal thoughts I have on X, Y, or Z product. I will shortly add a few more categories beyond speakers.

Ok, it's good to know I am on the right track then. I've been heavily considering the LCD3 and HE6, but neither still sound as good as these for example and those KEFs aren't even floor standing speakers:

Suggested 5.1 setup:

http://www.amazon.com/Infinity-Primus-P363-Three-way-Floorstanding/dp/B0046A8R3M/
(plus the matching bookshelf and center)
However, I prefer stereo to surround. I'd much rather have two fantastic speakers than 5 cheap ones. Your front speakers are the most important aspects of any system (surround or not), so going stereo and adding surround to it guarantees you have a great base to build around. I'd recommend:
