Some kind of cycling jacket is a good start. Also, lights, especially at the rear but front lights are a sound investment. I have one of these for daylight running. I've also found that a light mounted on my helmet is useful, partly to light my way but also because it's easy to shine it directly at drivers if I think they haven't seen me. I use a big rubber band to mount one of these through the slots in the helmet.
General tips: get used to riding on your own before taking a passenger. If you don't know the area well, use Google Maps and Google Streetview to plan your route - work out which routes are the quietest. Don't worry too much if you go a bit out of your way: it just means you'll get fitter.
My own feeling is that most motorists are way better than they get credit for, but London does seem to be a bit of a warzone. If you're properly equipped and ride safely (stop at lights, don't be an ass) you should find most motorists respect that. Pay particular attention around heavy vehicles.
Good luck, remember to enjoy the ride :)
