That's a good assumption! Generally, that's true... you want to spend the bulk of your budget on the speakers themselves since those are the things actually turning electricity into sound.

It's just that DIY speakers throw off that equation in the best possible way since they're such good values. (grin)

The C-Notes are rates for 60wpc continuous, 120wpc peak.

General rule of thumb is that all amps sound extremely similar (if not indistinguishable) and that the main difference is that more power means you can play louder without distortion. Each doubling of power gets you can additional 3dB of distortion-free power. Even if you don't play your music super loud the extra power is far from wasted, as it helps your system handle those big loud dynamic peaks in your music or movies... can really help things come alive.

Any Class AB home theater receiver (I don't think you can find one for less than 50wpc) should do the trick nicely. Craigslist/Kjiji is a goldmine for these.

With compact Class D amps, rule of thumb is that they always overstate the power by about 2x. When they say "100wpc" they mean "100wpc at 10% distortion" which sounds like ass. So you just halve that number.

[This is apparently a pretty solid Lepai that puts out "100wpc" so.... 50wpc.](

I'm using one of these, which should more or less functionally be the same thing (same chip amp, I believe) except for the Bluetooth which I wouldn't use anyway:

You can find smaller amps like this guy, which are essentially clones of the good old SMSL SA-50 or SA-60 that put out "50wpc" (so... 25 or so) which should be more or less fine too.

My real choice?

If you really want to ball out, for a bit over $200 Emotiva sells the A-100 which is just a fucking delight. For reasons not entirely explainable by science it's one of my favorite pieces of electronics I've ever owned. Unlike the chi-fi crap (don't get me wrong; I love chi-fi crap) I've named in this thread, it should quite literally last a lifetime. This is something you will still be using and enjoying in 20 or 30 years and probably beyond.

The Topping TP60 retails for $200 and I like it about 95% as much as the Emotiva. Unlike the Emotiva you can actually find them cheap on eBay sometimes. I got two for less than $200 total. They are a step above other chi-fi gear although a step below the Emotiva.
