With apologies to OP, my new kickstarter: "A high-tech piece of interactive mobile tech that increases backstage safety without impacting stage lighting or audience enjoyment." The Illuminator(tm)

It will not cause any change in your light, you'll be able to remove it without issue. But for just a couple dollars more why not just get, http://www.amazon.com/Maglite-2-Cell-Flashlight-Holster-Black/dp/B005UUSAAM

So what about a Maglite or a Maglite Mini?

This is too late for your mom this time, but she really needs to check out an emergency preparedness kit - list from Ready.gov

I don't know your mom, but I'm guessing she's older and would like a less heavy option, so:

Actual it was like this. I just propped it up on something when in use. Probably could get some sort of stand for it.

I had several MiniMag2AA lights that I had collected, over the years. I was really attached to these lights, but they were pretty much useless to me, with the stock incandescent bulbs. So, some time back, I upgraded all, but one, to this TerraLUX MiniStar2 TLE-5EX MiniStar2 EXTREME, which I picked up through Battery Junction, when they were on sale, for about 12 bucks a piece. I couldn't' pass up the deal.

Here is a beam shot of the stock bulb, taken in our garage, from about 12 feet away.

Here is one, with the the TerraLux upgrade installed. World of difference.

The same exact camera setting were used for both shots. In both instances, the light was focused to as good a spot as I could get out of the light. Notice the much better focused beam on the TerraLux, as well as the generous spill, in spite of the focused beam., as compared to the old incandescent bulb, with it's funky, donut-shaped hot spot.

I agree with the posters, that you should only use NiMhs in this light. They will never leak, and will perform much better than any alkalines could. They'll also pay for themselves, more quickly than you can imagine, if you use the light much, at all, and they discharge very slowly, compared to the NiMh batteries of years ago. These batteries also don't have memory, so you can top them off whenever you'd like, unlike Nickel Cadmium batteries used to (those were the worst).

You could actually pick up a Maglite Mini Pro 2AA for about 20 bucks, on Amazon, though. If you're really attached to the light, and want it to be a lot more useful than it is, currently, might be worth the upgrade. If not, and if you really like Maglites, you may just want to go with a newer LED MiniMag Pro model, rated at 226 lumens.

I'm fairly sure that the newest version of this is 272 lumens, but costs a lot more, and, in my opinion, wouldn't really be worth it, since there are so many better performing lights in a similar price range, that run on more serious batteries (single 18650) batteries; but that's a whole other discussion lol.

The difference between 226 and 272 lumens is negligible to the human eye.

A mini Maglite. Best goddang thing I carry with me. Can light up a room and can be used to check pupillary response.
