Equipment rentals are a ripoff and almost always completely unnecessary. This is especially true of modems. Your rented modem might total $1000 or more over the years, depending on how long you use it. I can guarantee you its not worth anything near that.
Go on Amazon or Newegg and buy a modem yourself. Its a one time purchase of all of $53. There are many other cable modems made by many other manufacturers as well, so feel free to shop around.
Unless you're renting highly specialized equipment you're a fool to pay an ongoing fee. Cable modems are not highly specialized equipment. Buy your own cable modem. It saves a lot of money in the long run.
I know this is stretching your budget, but a modem like this (amazon.com/dp/B019ZY1ZWS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_9sbCDb19W1ACX) should be perfectly fine for the next 5-10 years. This is, by no means the best modem, just one example from the many valid ones.
I'd go with this modem. I know a lot of people that own it including me and none of us have had a problem while using it with xfinity. It's been awhile since I've looked at routers, but the nighthawk ones are really good though expensive.
Two separate options to consider here - your Wifi needs and your cable modem needs, so let's talk about them separately. For your modem, if you've got a 150 mbps plan, the a DOCSIS 3.0 8x4 channel modem will work fine. Under the DOCSIS 3.0 specification, download channels are 42.9 kbps each, so an 8 channel modem will support up to 343 mbps down (Europe is different). You can certainly buy a modem with more channels, but the extra channels won't be used unless you upgrade to higher speeds later.
DOCSIS 3.1 is another issue. I am NOT recommending to anyone to buy a DOCSIS 3.1 modem until their ISP actually rolls out DOCSIS 3.1 protocols and confirms that a particular model of modem will work with the way the ISP has implemented them. Why? DOCSIS 3.0 and 3.1 are very different protocols. All DOCSIS 3.1 modems I've seen also include the circuitry to offer DOCSIS 3.0 compatibility. They may say they work with Comcast, Xfinity, etc. but this only means they're compatible with the DOCSIS 3.0 protocols that ISP in now running, not what they will run when they roll out 3.1. Wait and buy a 3.1 modem when you actually get 3.1.
Bottom line - I don't think the modem in your combo device is your problem. However, I think the router is. If you want to replace it completely, the Motorola model you reference will certainly work, but you could get an 8.4 channel model (like this https://www.amazon.com/MOTOROLA-Certified-Comcast-BrightHouse-Wireless/dp/B019ZY1ZWS ) that should also work fine and save a little more money.
For routers/wifi: your current modem/router only supports 802.11n wifi which is uses 2.4GHz channels. 2.4 GHz is used for tons of stuff - almost anything wireless like bluetooth, old cordless phones, etc., not just wifi. When the tech mentioned interference, it probably these 2.4Gz channels he was referring to. Fortunately, newer routers have added 802.11ac, which uses 5Ghz channels. Not only are these less likely to conflict, they're much faster. The downside is they don't have as much range. However, in a house your size they should be great unless you have concrete or steel interior walls. Right now, I think the best bang for your buck is routers with the AC1750 specification. (Note: Since the 801.11ac spec came out, many manufacturers have used the term ACxxxx for their routers to specify speed.
