I originally got him an Xbox so he could play games, watch Netflix, etc. on the 2nd TV upstairs. This year I've started traveling a lot for work and bought myself a gaming laptop (this one, if you're interested). So I set up my old desktop (Alienware circa 2009, with the video card upgraded last year) for him to use.
My wife, I'm ashamed to admit, isn't even a gamer. She insists she's not, even though she spends 2-3 hours a day on her iPad playing games.
Probably because it's a ridiculously overpriced laptop.
This is the laptop I have, it's $1k cheaper than your laptop, and I can run the game at 1080p with ENB, 2k textures, and 100+ mods without hardly a hit.
The 870M is about the best you're going to do given your budget. The MSI GT60 Dominator-424 would fit best into your budget, and it is in no way thin.
There are, again not thin, but other Clevo based options available around your budget with the GTX 970M. Lower quality machines, but powerful nonetheless.
I have a GT 60 (Dominator 424) and love it.

I'd go with a newer model, though.
Here are a few options, they are all good.

With these models, you will get what you pay for. The first link is a touchscreen, the rest are not.

This is the specific machine I'm looking at, looks like 120 days from MSI
It's a bit over budget, but the upcoming Asus ROG G750JM has excellent build quality and the latest hardware, including an updated GTX 860M GPU, which provides excellent speed and draws less power than its predecessor. It has an i7 4700HQ, 12GB ram, 1920x1080 17.3" screen and a 1TB 7200RPM HDD. It's a 10 pound beast, but it has the best heat dissipation system. The MSI Dominator GT60 is similar in configuration, but it has 8GB ram and the heat dissipation isn't quite as good as the Asus's.
You could also take a look at some of the Sager customizeable laptops.
These are pretty good. They hit around the 1000 euro mark.

This is a great choice.
The MSI GT60 Dominator is quite the powerful machine and it should fall within your price range (I don't know about availability in your country)
However, it is 1.7 inches (4.5 cm) thick and it weights 7.7 pounds (3.5 kilos). Might not be portable enough for you. The fans can also get quite loud if you're pushing this thing to the limit. It's a fine machine and has a fantastic price/performance ration but it's not exactly portable.
Edit: I myself just picked up this Lenovo Y50 and a lot of people seem to recommend it very highly, along with the N550JK that was already mentioned here. The only thing people seem to dislike is that the screen, while 1080p, is of lower quality than some other machines. I'm talking about less than average viewing angles and colors. However, this isn't such an issue for me.
The Y50 comes in many variations, most with an i7 processor and some with 16gb of ram.
