The little connector is a F-Connector as many here have said before. They clip into that wall plate. But to be more specific the things that are clipping into the wall plate are called KEYSTONE jacks. You can get keystone jacks in a wide variety of connections, from F-connectors to RCA, Rj45 networking, even HDMI. Most importantly to you, they also come in speaker Terminals. (In both Black and red)

It is my suspicion that the person who was doing your install shopped at home depot. He was required to buy a bunch more "F" connectors than he needed to, and so thought it would be a good way to do the speaker wiring. It's not.

So, for the rest of this post, i'll link you products and tell you how to correct the situation if you desire to.

  1. Take off the panel from the wall and determine what exactly is going on. Do you see coax cables to each of those, or do you see some wierd adapters or blobs of solder?

2)You need to determine what kind of cable is going to the speakers in the ceiling. You'd going to have to temporarily remove a speaker from the ceiling.

2a) Is the speaker only have the wire from the wall connecting to it? If so it's probably a unpowered speaker and you're just running raw speaker wire to it.

2b) If the speaker has some other wires going to it and a circuit board with some components on it, then the speakers may be individually amplified. If they're amplified speakers then we need to take a different plan. I suspect they are most certainly NOT amplified. (But self amplified speakers would at least explain the coax connectors a little more.

    -- IF NOT amplified --

If you're speakers are not amplified and they are indeed normal speakers.

    AND

IF the wire going to the speakers is standard two-wire speaker wire

    THEN

You should replace the F-Connector keystones with some kind of speaker-wire keystones. You have two options to do this either this kind of bananna plug keystone (they come in RED and Black) https://www.amazon.ca/TNP-Banana-Jack-Keystone-Insert/dp/B01GCIJYIW/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=speaker+keystone+jack&qid=1559057435&s=gateway&sr=8-4 or this kind of dual-insert wire keystone https://www.amazon.ca/MyCableMart-Wall-plate-Keystone-14-30AWG/dp/B01HIPHG42/ref=sr_1_6?keywords=speaker+keystone+jack&qid=1559057435&s=gateway&sr=8-6

    -- If amplified --

If you're speakers are amplified, then you want to swap out your F connector keystones to RCA keystones, and send RCA level un-amplified signals down the wires.
