Hi /u/Godzigodzi - This has been a great thread with a lot of helpful/useful info, and a lot of respectful discussion of the pros and cons of various cameras. It has been educational and a pleasure to read.
I know I'm coming to the party late, but I wanted to offer one more thought because, in my view, there has been very little discussion of one of the principal reason to buy the GH4 - 4K resolution.
I have the BMPCC, and the GH3 (and the GH2 and GH1), and they are all great cameras, but in a couple of years, a 1080p camera may be as hard to sell as a 720p camera is today.
4K is not a fad or a gimmick. Even before 4K screens are widely available, it can make your 1080p output better, enable you to stabilize in post without going below 1080p, enable you to do smooth tracking/slider shots without moving the camera and allow you to execute "crop cuts" that make it look like you're shooting multi-camera when you're not.
The possibilities are endless and pretty amazing.
To answer the original TL;DR question - yes, the GH4 is "awesome", (especially at the [$1707 Adorama bundle price] (http://www.adorama.com/IPCDMCGH4B.html?KBID=66297) [Referral Link]) and worth going over your budget to get a nice lens for it.
But you don't have to go over your budget for nice lenses. If you're willing to shoot manual, you can spend less than $100 for a [~$60 Canon FD 28mm f2.8 lens] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AAZG5YA/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00AAZG5YA&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20) and an [$11.50 FD to micro 4/3 adapter] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00870R1D4/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00870R1D4&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20) [Referral Links].
Hope this is helpful and good luck with your decision!
Bill
If you don't mind shooting manual, you can get high quality classic glass for not a lot of money. At your price point, I recommend [Referral Links]:
Here is what shooters are doing with the GH4 and inexpensive FD lenses:
This setup will get you started - and will be a great value for your money for a little over $1500.
Again, hope this is helpful!
