Items needed:

  1. Zetronix HD video headset (The only ones I could find that could do true HD) $389 USD

  2. Logitech 1080p Webcam 2x $72 USD

  3. Two very very long USB cables.

  4. A laptop with multi-webcam software.

Just look at their store, everything is priced with the same pattern:

Logitech G400 $138.31 other sellers $68.89

Logitech G Driving Force Shifter $229.99 other sellers $55

Logitech MX Sound 2.0 $299.99 other sellers $99.99

Logitech HD Pro Webcam C910 $293.19 other sellers $50.99

Do you still want to argue if this is an algorithm bug or a scummy seller issue?

I don't think you should focus on the built-in camera when looking for a laptop, you can buy a external one, which will be way better than most built-in and they're not expensive.

Look at these two for example:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003M2YT96

If you're gonna use your laptop only for skype calling and web browsing you could buy a 500~600$ laptop with a decent CPU and GPU and any camera you want IMO.

Items 2 and 4 could be combined into this. Assuming your hardware handles the BT Stereo. Versatility speaks volumes when you like to jog/work out

As far as number 1, logitech is good quality. Their software that it comes with is crap but it works everything else like an ethical slut. Warning shameless plug Although you're not going to look bad on any medium...

3? I really only use a stereo system now which is pricey

I'm using Skype in Ubuntu Desktop 10.10 64bit edition, with at Logitech c910 web cam and it works flawlessly in Linux. Best web cam I've ever seen (plug in play; just works in Linux and the skype beta).

I think I had to check additional software sources (partner), then I was able to install skype the normal way: sudo apt-get install skype

It works flawlessly. It allows me to share either of my monitors at anytime, and the video works great. I never could get this going with Empathy, so I must commend Skype for their development.

Thanks, it seems that there is a newer version out as well and it's even cheaper. This one looks like a possibility. Only $75 on Amazon right now.

If you search the reviews there are a bunch of mac people using this one too.

It's a great idea, though I can't offer much in the way of concrete suggestions without knowing more about your setup, intended lesson style and budget.

I know that my planning to do something similar involves setting up a separate webcam on my projector, facing the board, and just recording from there.

I'm looking at a couple of options, depending on how much I have to spend. The only rub there is that the cable spec on USB is only about 16 ft, which makes the setup kind of annoying.

As for the actual video editing, I point out Wikipedia's comparison of various editing tools, and that anything licensed under the GPL or LGPL should be free to use.

The actual "posting online" part is something I'm still yet to settle on, but I've heard good things about TeacherTube.

You're not crazy, but youre mistaking ability for necessity.

A webcam is nothing more than a camera. The name came about when monitor mounted and embedded cameras became common place to facilitate things like Skype. Because they were devised to be a camera to chat over the web, they got the name webcam. But they aren't functionally any different than a normal camera.

The term webcam is used to differentiate between a small mounted camera like this or this from a DSLR, video camera, disposable camera, polaroid/instant camera, infrared camera etc etc.

It's just a differentiation based on the original intent. A webcam streaming to the internet is functionally identical to that same camera streaming to your hard drive or a video camera streaming to a hard drive or magnetic tape.
