Guns get a lot of attention from American preppers because they are so widely available here... but you can still defend yourself without a gun.

I would suggest learning some knife/stick fighting. Eskrima is probably the easiest martial art to find for this. If you can find it, Balintawak is especially nasty (it's basically a 'street boxer' version of Eskrima). A pocket-sized aluminum flashlight can inflict a world of pain on someone, if you know how to use it. So far, I have not encountered any places that ban flashlights.

I guess you could take up archery for defense/hunting... but the use-cases are so narrow and the skill requirement is so steep, it just doesn't seem like a worthwhile effort unless you are already an archery hobbyist.

Amazon is the cheapest but sites like Goinggear and BatteryJunction are official retailers of them and are also active here on the /r/Flashlight.

I just purchased a Nitecore MT2A, it's a decently priced flashlight for the power. You could take a look at the other lights too. If you want to do some digging you could check /r/flashlight for advice. Hope that helps!
