I think some of the problem will be trying to convince them on whether they will save money/be much more expensive than just replacing the processor only by going the full motherboard and CPU replacement route.

After reading the specifications, I fully agree with you. Trying to extract what you can out of a very outdated GeForce 7025/nForce 630 with a TDP limitation like that really isn't worth it.

To piggyback on your recommendation for trading up to a new board and processor. (Since they can take the DDR3 from the old board and use it.) I'll do a bit of of short homework and run a comparison. (Although, I am sure that Gaming PC probably threw the same thing at you, so please....take it for what it's worth.)

Phenom II 960T 3.0Ghz/3.4Ghz TC 120.00-190.00

Could possibly unlock it to 6 cores, is 95w, and has an unlocked multiplier. However, probably trying to unlock the cores, and keeping it at the default frequency might tip it over the 95w TDP. Definitely not going to get an overclock and unlocked cores with that board.

Phenom II X6 1045T 2.7Ghz/3.2Ghz TC 95w 135.00-155.00

Safest bet for a new "true" 6 core processor.

MSI 970A-G43 65.00-78.00

Cheapest AMD 900 series board so far.

AMD FX-6350 6-core 130.00-150.00

Taken from your recommendation and is noted as one of the "best bang for the buck" FX processors from most peers here on Reddit and other forums. (Some would also say the 8320 is too.)

First route would be anywhere from 120.00 to 190.00 with some possible limitations and hiccups, but still doable.

Second route would be anywhere from 195.00 to 228.00, but you would net better performance in the long run.

FX-6350 vs 1065T (Your best possible processor with the TDP limitation.)

vs. Phenom II 960T

vs. Phenom II x6 1045T (Other readily available "new" processor.)

You can get this CPU which according to HP's specification page is the best processor that will be compatible. I'm not sure if the 95w TDP limit is because of the motherboard or the power supply but somebody here may know. If it is the PSU you could maybe get a better one as you'll be putting a better PSU in to be running that 660 anyway...

EDIT: Sorry that CPU is 125w This one is 95w..

sry for answering so late, I could reccomenr you this ( http://www.amazon.co.uk/AMD-Phenom-Processor-Socket-Warranty/dp/B006G76LZY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1369402216&sr=8-1&keywords=AMD+PhenomII+X+6 ) Processor, it is not that expensive but pretty powerfull! And it fits ur Motherboard perfectly! ;)

No, I certainly have no idea whether it's the actual 3570k that's causing an issue. I have one of those hybrid drives (this) and every other aspect of my computer should have been up to par so I can't really explain why it crashes every once in a while on tasks that my old amd 1045t (this) didn't struggle with. If you have any other explanations or need more details, definitely get back to me.
Also, on the second point, could you elaborate a bit. Is my thinking correct then? Just take out the old processor, throw on some thermal paste and apply the new one, correct? Do I have to do anything else bios related or anything that I need to keep in mind before starting?

After some research it seems your board only supports 95w processors.

I will also need the exact model # of your cpu and what RAM you have (DDR2 or DDR3)

I see two options here.

  1. Upgrade the motherboard right now to an AM3+ board and move the processor/ram over. This should allow you to attempt to unlock the potential 4th core or potential L3 cache on your x3 turning it into a Phenom II x4. This also means that later, even if this doesn't work, you can upgrade to an 8-core bulldozer. The X3 still should have some life in it though especially with an unlocked 4th core.

  2. Upgrade to this processor. I'm not going to guarantee this working but it should considering your current cpu and this one are both 95w.

Real talk OP, you should just grab an FX-6300 and a AM3+ motherboard. Lemme give you an example:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

Type|Item|Price
----|:----|:----
CPU | AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz 6-Core Processor | $99.99 @ Amazon
Motherboard | Gigabyte GA-970A-D3P ATX AM3+/AM3 Motherboard | $79.99 @ Amazon
| Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts |
| Total | $179.98

For $20 less, you could get a new motherboard and CPU. You could then turn around and sell your AM3 motherboard on craigslist, or keep it as a backup. You could also do something similar with intel and get a decent LGA1150 Mobo and an i3, so that you can upgrade further

If you're really set on a Phenom II x6, amazon has a Phenom II X6 1045T for $163. It's on sale ATM. It's probably not going to perform as well as the FX-6300, though.
