if you can buy a gun, you can buy a container (hell, a padlocked handgun case off amazon would make do) to store it so your kids can't get in it
Pistol needs to be unloaded, without a magazine in it. Magazine(s) needs to be empty. Put the gun in a locked container, hard or soft case. Something like this should work just fine. Put it in your trunk and lock the trunk. Just go straight to the range and then back home.
