I use DxTory/Audacity and Movie Maker like a scrub ;).
For a mic, honestly you don't need to go out and buy a really expensive on. I use these which were cheaper than a snowball or yeti but still have quality output.
If you're looking for something cheap and great these are amazing, I've had pretty expensive headsets before but this one just trumps them all even though it's so cheap.
Even if you end up not liking them they can always be a back up pair or one for your friends, they're pretty cheap so it's not much of a gamble, i can tell where it comes from when a CT as much as cough's with these so i use them all the time.

Despite this being too late and a dead thread. I've actually got a fairly simple rig in comparison to some.
1 TB standard sata harddrive
Graphics Card - GTX 550 Ti DirectCU
Mobo - SABERTOOTH 990FX
RAM - 4GB DDR3
OS - Win 7
Standard Microsoft Mouse
Standard Microsoft Keyboard
XBox360 wired PC controller
Antivirus - Nod32 @ £18/yr normally, free with our business license
Headphones
Not sure what monitor, probably close to 21" widescreen
Think it cost about £600-650 at the time for the computer.
The problem is that games are TOO cheap at times... so you end up with this

This should play games at mid-ish settings. It's a fairly generic cookie-cutter build otherwise. When you have another 23 pounds upgrade to 8GB of RAM. For extra 10 you can pick up this 2 times bigger hard drive. Get Windows 8, because it's newer and there is no real point getting Windows 7 now.
Here is what I recommend for monitor and speakers:

I have the same monitor and it's pretty good: Full HD, 21.5 inch, 5ms response time, wide viewing angle and pretty nice picture. The speakers are just something cheap with OK reviews. I put in aheadset, since most gamers prefer them, but that i up to you. It's also personal reccomendation and I can tell you for 21 pounds it's a steal. The sound quality is better than some expensive headsets I have used, it does not feel super cheap and the microphone is perfectly acceptable for gaming and stuff like Skype.
Questions?
Thanks for the reply
My current headset is a Plantronics 380 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Plantronics-86050-05-Gamecom-Gaming-Headset/dp/B0079G2Y2A and I might consider headphones instead but I use Skype often so I will still need a decent microphone.
I also know next to nothing about soundcards or audio terminology.
When I was looking at the same sort of thing I found These.
There's a few people on here talking about headphones and standalone mics and honestly, even though I have a small student studio setup I still prefer the simplicity of a headset for gaming.
This will likely never be answered but does anyone here know if I could use this headset: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Plantronics-86050-05-Gamecom-Gaming-Headset/dp/B0079G2Y2A
if i bought this adapter: http://www.amazon.co.uk/USB-Stereo-Sound-Card-Adaptor/dp/B003UR9B8M/ref=sr_1_25?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1370596487&sr=1-25&keywords=3.5+jack+to+usb
Could i use this to speak online on a PS3, thanks
